    Incorporation of privacy elements in space station design

    Privacy exists to the extent that individuals can control the degree of social contact that they have with one another. The opportunity to withdraw from other people serves a number of important psychological and social functions, and is in the interests of safety, high performance, and high quality of human life. Privacy requirements for Space Station crew members are reviewed, and architectual and other guidelines for helping astronauts achieve desired levels of privacy are suggested. In turn, four dimensions of privacy are discussed: the separation of activities by areas within the Space Station, controlling the extent to which astronauts have visual contact with one another, controlling the extent to which astronauts have auditory contact with one another, and odor control. Each section presents a statement of the problem, a review of general solutions, and specific recommendations. The report is concluded with a brief consideration of how selection, training, and other procedures can also help Space Station occupants achieve satisfactory levels of seclusion

    dissertationIn the recent past, the mental health system has responded to calls for deinstitutionalization and has had to deal with steadily decreasing flows of money. At the same time, a growing number of people who need treatment are finding themselves in the criminal justice system. The criminal justice system frequently finds it has to care for mentally ill individuals even though that is not their mission. In order to better address the needs of mentally ill individuals in both systems they have had to collaborate on behalf of those they serve. This study set out to explore the possibility of inherent problems in the way mental health and criminal justice professionals viewed each other, perceived barriers to collaboration, and possible inroads to better collaboration. Using a qualitative methodology based on the constructivist paradigm and systems theory, fourteen mental health and 15 criminal justice professionals were interviewed. Semistructured questionnaires in separate focus groups were used to explore their perceptions of each other, each other‘s systems, and barriers that individuals with mental illnesses in those systems face. The results indicated that mental health and criminal justice professionals‘ views varied according to their education, experiences with each other, and proximity of working with each other. The results also indicated that funding problems, low cross system education, service gaps, and inconsistency in professionalism inhibited collaboration between the two systems. Participants felt education regarding each system‘s philosophies, appropriately shared responsibilities, and understanding the limits both systems would help eliminate some barriers faced in collaboration. Participants said benefits of close collaboration would include higher success rates for mentally ill individuals, less recidivism in both systems, and increased professional satisfaction. Implications of the study indicated the need for increased education in both systems regarding the purpose, function, and philosophies of both systems. Also, leaders and front line professionals should focus on making their interactions with each other more consistent, clear, and available. Further research should investigate quantitative verification of the results, policy implementation to promote collaborative efforts, and educational efforts to improve the perceptions of mental health and criminal justice professionals of each other

    V3885 Sagittarius: a Comparison with a Range of Standard Model Accretion Disks

    A χ~2\widetilde{\chi}^2 analysis of standard model accretion disk synthetic spectrum fits to combined FUSEFUSE and STIS spectra of V3885 Sagittarius, on an absolute flux basis, selects a model that accurately represents the observed SED. Calculation of the synthetic spectrum requires the following system parameters. The cataclysmic variable secondary star period-mass relation calibrated by Knigge in 2007 sets the secondary component mass. A mean white dwarf (WD) mass from the same study, that is consistent with an observationally-determined mass ratio, sets the adopted WD mass of 0.7M⊙0.7M_{\odot}, and the WD radius follows from standard theoretical models. The adopted inclination, i=65{\arcdeg}, is a literature consensus, and is subsequently supported by χ~2\widetilde{\chi}^2 analysis. The mass transfer rate is the remaining parameter to set the accretion disk TeffT_{\rm eff} profile, and the HipparcosHipparcos parallax constrains that parameter to M˙=5.0±2.0×10−9M⊙yr−1\dot{M}=5.0{\pm}2.0{\times}10^{-9} M_{\odot} {\rm yr}^{-1} by a comparison with observed spectra. The fit to the observed spectra adopts the contribution of a 57,000±500057,000{\pm}5000K WD. The model thus provides realistic constraints on M˙\dot{M} and TeffT_{\rm eff} for a large M˙\dot{M} system above the period gap.Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, 9 tables.     Statistical Dynamics of Religions and Adherents

    Religiosity is one of the most important sociological aspects of populations. All religions may evolve in their beliefs and adapt to the society developments. A religion is a social variable, like a language or wealth, to be studied like any other organizational parameter. Several questions can be raised, as considered in this study: e.g. (i) from a ``macroscopic'' point of view : How many religions exist at a given time? (ii) from a ``microscopic'' view point: How many adherents belong to one religion? Does the number of adherents increase or not, and how? No need to say that if quantitative answers and mathematical laws are found, agent based models can be imagined to describe such non-equilibrium processes. It is found that empirical laws can be deduced and related to preferential attachment processes, like on evolving network; we propose two different algorithmic models reproducing as well the data. Moreover, a population growth-death equation is shown to be a plausible modeling of evolution dynamics in a continuous time framework.     posterTechnology is increasingly becoming a part of everyday life. Some technologies traditionally used for entertainment are now becoming the center of focus in academic circles. One such technology is the podcast, an audio file that is typically free and consists of individuals speaking on different topics. Podcasts have had a variety of uses in higher education (McGarr 2009). One use is to have professors record their lectures and distribute them later to students (Fernandez, Simo et al. 2009). Another is to have students create podcasts for class for the purpose of creating knowledge (Lee, McLoughlin et al. 2008). Finally, podcasts can be used to supplement weekly reading materials (Edirsingha, Rizzi et al. 2007). Because of the novelty of this technology and its increasing usefulness as a teaching tool, three websites were created: One that would evaluate professors' knowledge of podcasts, one that would evaluate podcasts as study tools, and one that would provide information on podcasts including ways to use them, where to find them, and how to create them

    Documentation of the INDOT Experience and Construction of the Bridge Decks Containing Internal Curing in 2013

    The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) constructed four bridge decks utilizing internally cured, high performance concrete (IC HPC) during the summer of 2013. These decks implement research findings from the research presented in the FHWA/IN/JTRP-2010/10 report where internal curing was proposed as one method to reduce the potential for shrinkage cracking, leading to improved durability. The objective of this research was to document the construction of the four IC HPC bridge decks that were constructed in Indiana during 2013 and quantify the properties and performance of these decks. This report contains documentation of the production and construction of IC HPC concrete for the four bridge decks in this study. In addition, samples of the IC HPC used in construction were compared with a reference high performance concrete (HPC) which did not utilize internal curing. These samples were transported to the laboratory where the mechanical properties, resistance to chloride migration, and potential for shrinkage and cracking was assessed. Using experimental results and mixture proportions, the diffusion based service life of the bridge decks was able to be estimated. Collectively, the results indicate that the IC HPC mixtures that were produced as a part of this study exhibit the potential to more than triple the service life of the typical bridge deck in Indiana while reducing the early age autogenous shrinkage by more than 80% compared to non-internally cured concretes

    Effects of Six Common Dietary Nutrients on Murine Intestinal Organoid Growth

    The intestinal epithelium of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract constantly renews itself to absorb nutrients and provide protection for the body from the outside world. Since the intestinal epithelium is constantly exposed to various chemicals and dietary components, it is critical to determine which constituents promote or inhibit intestinal epithelium health and growth rate. Intestinal organoids, three-dimensional miniature models of the intestines, represent an ex vivo tool to investigate intestinal physiology and growth patterns. In this study, we measured the growth rates of murine intestinal organoids exposed to various concentrations of different dietary constituents. Results indicate that caffeic acid inhibited organoid growth in a concentration-dependent manner, curcumin exhibited variable effectiveness, and vitamin C had no effect on organoid growth

    The Problem of Confirmation in the Everett Interpretation

    I argue that the Oxford school Everett interpretation is internally incoherent, because we cannot claim that in an Everettian universe the kinds of reasoning we have used to arrive at our beliefs about quantum mechanics would lead us to form true beliefs. I show that in an Everettian context, the experimental evidence that we have available could not provide empirical confirmation for quantum mechanics, and moreover that we would not even be able to establish reference to the theoretical entities of quantum mechanics. I then consider a range of existing Everettian approaches to the probability problem and show that they do not succeed in overcoming this incoherence

    Predicting Suicidal and Self-Injurious Events in a Correctional Setting Using AI Algorithms on Unstructured Medical Notes and Structured Data

    Suicidal and self-injurious incidents in correctional settings deplete the institutional and healthcare resources, create disorder and stress for staff and other inmates. Traditional statistical analyses provide some guidance, but they can only be applied to structured data that are often difficult to collect and their recommendations are often expensive to act upon. This study aims to extract information from medical and mental health progress notes using AI algorithms to make actionable predictions of suicidal and self-injurious events to improve the efficiency of triage for health care services and prevent suicidal and injurious events from happening at California\u27s Orange County Jails. The results showed that the notes data contain more information with respect to suicidal or injurious behaviors than the structured data available in the EHR database at the Orange County Jails. Using the notes data alone (under-sampled to 50%) in a Transformer Encoder model produced an AUC-ROC of 0.862, a Sensitivity of 0.816, and a Specificity of 0.738. Incorporating the information extracted from the notes data into traditional Machine Learning models as a feature alongside structured data (under-sampled to 50%) yielded better performance in terms of Sensitivity (AUC-ROC: 0.77, Sensitivity: 0.89, Specificity: 0.65).
