A quantum magnetic RC circuit
We propose a setup that is the spin analog of the charge-based quantum RC
circuit. We define and compute the spin capacitance and the spin resistance of
the circuit for both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) systems. We
find that the antiferromagnetic setup has universal properties, but the
ferromagnetic setup does not. We discuss how to use the proposed setup as a
quantum source of spin excitations, and put forward a possible experimental
realization using ultracold atoms in optical lattices

Symmetry, winding number and topological charge of vortex solitons in discrete-symmetry media
We determine the functional behavior near the discrete rotational symmetry
axis of discrete vortices of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We show that
these solutions present a central phase singularity whose charge is restricted
by symmetry arguments. Consequently, we demonstrate that the existence of
high-charged discrete vortices is related to the presence of other off-axis
phase singularities, whose positions and charges are also restricted by
symmetry arguments. To illustrate our theoretical results, we offer two
numerical examples of high-charged discrete vortices in photonic crystal fibers
showing hexagonal discrete rotational invariance.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Forecasting temporal dynamics of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Northeast Brazil.
IntroductionCutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne disease of increasing importance in northeastern Brazil. It is known that sandflies, which spread the causative parasites, have weather-dependent population dynamics. Routinely-gathered weather data may be useful for anticipating disease risk and planning interventions.Methodology/principal findingsWe fit time series models using meteorological covariates to predict CL cases in a rural region of Bahía, Brazil from 1994 to 2004. We used the models to forecast CL cases for the period 2005 to 2008. Models accounting for meteorological predictors reduced mean squared error in one, two, and three month-ahead forecasts by up to 16% relative to forecasts from a null model accounting only for temporal autocorrelation.SignificanceThese outcomes suggest CL risk in northeastern Brazil might be partially dependent on weather. Responses to forecasted CL epidemics may include bolstering clinical capacity and disease surveillance in at-risk areas. Ecological mechanisms by which weather influences CL risk merit future research attention as public health intervention targets

Detection of Rotational Spectral Variation on the M-type asteroid (16) Psyche
The asteroid (16) Psyche is of scientific interest because it contains ~ 1%
of the total mass of the asteroid belt and is thought to be the remnant
metallic core of a protoplanet. Radar observations have indicated the
significant presence of metal on the surface with a small percentage of
silicates. Prior ground-based observations showed rotational variations in the
near-infrared (NIR) spectra and radar albedo of this asteroid. However, no
comprehensive study that combines multi-wavelength data has been conducted so
far. Here we present rotationally resolved NIR spectra (0.7-2.5 microns) of
(16) Psyche obtained with the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. These data have
been combined with shape models of the asteroid for each rotation phase.
Spectral band parameters extracted from the NIR spectra show that the pyroxene
band center varies from ~ 0.92 to 0.94 microns. Band center values were used to
calculate the pyroxene chemistry of the asteroid, whose average value was found
to be Fs30En65Wo5. Variations in the band depth were also observed, with values
ranging from 1.0 to 1.5%. Using a new laboratory spectral calibration we
estimated an average orthopyroxene content of 6+/-1%. The mass-deficit region
of Psyche, which exhibits the highest radar albedo, also shows the highest
value for spectral slope and the minimum band depth. The spectral
characteristics of Psyche suggest that its parent body did not have the typical
structure expected for a differentiated body or that the sequence of events

Discovery of the Widest Very Low Mass Binary
We report the discovery of a very low mass binary system (primary mass <0.1
Msol) with a projected separation of ~5100 AU, more than twice that of the
widest previously known system. A spectrum covering the 1-2.5 microns
wavelength interval at R ~1700 is presented for each component. Analysis of the
spectra indicates spectral types of M6.5V and M8V, and the photometric distance
of the system is ~62 pc. Given that previous studies have established that no
more than 1% of very low mass binary systems have orbits larger than 20 AU, the
existence of such a wide system has a bearing on very low mass star formation

Discovery of the brightest T dwarf in the northern hemisphere
We report the discovery of a bright (H=12.77) brown dwarf designated SIMP
J013656.5+093347. The discovery was made as part of a near-infrared proper
motion survey, SIMP (Sondage Infrarouge de Mouvement Propre), which uses proper
motion and near-infrared/optical photometry to identify brown dwarf candidates.
A low resolution (lambda/dlambda~40) spectrum of this brown dwarf covering the
0.88-2.35 microns wavelength interval is presented. Analysis of the spectrum
indicates a spectral type of T2.5+/-0.5. A photometric distance of 6.4+/-0.3 pc
is estimated assuming it is a single object. Current observations rule out a
binary of mass ratio ~1 and separation >5 AU. SIMP 0136 is the brightest T
dwarf in the northern hemisphere and is surpassed only by Eps Indi Bab over the
whole sky. It is thus an excellent candidate for detailed studies and should

Proposal of \u3cem\u3eVibrionimonas magnilacihabitans\u3c/em\u3e gen. nov., sp. nov., a Curved Gram Negative Bacterium Isolated From Lake Michigan Water
A mesophilic bacterium appearing as curved rod-shaped cells was isolated from Lake Michigan water. It exhibited highest similarities with Sediminibacterium ginsengisoli DCY13T (94.4 %); Sediminibacterium salmoneum NJ-44T (93.6 %) and Hydrotalea flava CCUG 51397 T (93.1 %) while similarities with other recognized species were sym-homospermidine was the primary polyamine. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, with moderate amounts of iso-C16 : 0. The presence of glycolipids differentiated the novel strains from related genera. The DNA mol% G+C content of the type strain MU-2T was 45.2. Results for other phenotypic and molecular analyses indicated that strain MU-2T is a representative of a novel genus and species for which the name Vibrionimonas magnilacihabitans is proposed. The type strain is MU-2T ( = NRRL B-59231 = DSM 22423)
