Physiognomy and expression of the passions in some libraries of Spanish artists in the Seventeenth century
This paper presents a study of the physiognomic texts and treaties that could be found in the libraries of three theoreticians and painters of particular importance during the 17th century: Diego Velazquez, Vicente Carducho and Francisco Pacheco, all of them Spanish doctus artifex. This information allows us to gain a greater understanding about their theoretical training and the physiognomic and pathognomic sources consulted when they composed their works
During the 17th century some artists wrote the first artistic treaties in Spain, and decided to compose their own drawing books too. It is the case of the Valencian artist Vicente Salvador Gómez who in 1674 began one of the first examples that is preserved, the Cartilla y fundamentales reglas de la pintura. Director of the Academy of Painting of the convent of Santo Domingo, contemporary of Ribera and Alonso Cano, owned one of the most valuable and know artist?s library, with an enviable collection of four hundred volumes. This paper studies the pages that are conserved of the drawing books and shows how the artist knew the artistic theories that circulated by Europe, among them physiognomics. This subject, between the mantic and the science was object of study of numerous artists and had been included in the treaties of Leonardo or Dürer, but also in Spain by Carducho. The remains of the drawing book shows the knowledge of the painter on the clasic physiognomic theories, but their drawings also suppose the first and only examples of illustration of these theories in Spain in XVII century, uniting the image and the word in an exercise of marked didactic vocation
Deregulated cellular circuits driving immunoglobulins and complement consumption associate with the severity of COVID-19 patients
SARS-CoV-2 infection causes an abrupt response by the host immune system, which is largely responsible for the outcome of COVID-19. We investigated whether the specific immune responses in the peripheral blood of 276 patients were associated with the severity and progression of COVID-19. At admission, dramatic lymphopenia of T, B, and NK cells is associated with severity. Conversely, the proportion of B cells, plasmablasts, circulating follicular helper T cells (cTfh) and CD56–CD16+ NK-cells increased. Regarding humoral immunity, levels of IgM, IgA, and IgG were unaffected, but when degrees of severity were considered, IgG was lower in severe patients. Compared to healthy donors, complement C3 and C4 protein levels were higher in mild and moderate, but not in severe patients, while the activation peptide of C5 (C5a) increased from the admission in every patient, regardless of their severity. Moreover, total IgG, the IgG1 and IgG3 isotypes, and C4 decreased from day 0 to day 10 in patients who were hospitalized for more than two weeks, but not in patients who were discharged earlier. Our study provides important clues to understand the immune response observed in COVID-19 patients, associating severity with an imbalanced humoral response, and identifying new targets for therapeutic interventionThe study was funded by grants SAF2017-

The search of the emotional expressivity in the arts during the 17th century, guided both artists and theorist to the analysis of the expression of the passions, the physiognomy and the appearance of emotions. This subject had been developed into the artistic literature from the ancient times until this century by writers like PseudoAristotle, Alberti, Leonardo or Gaurico. This study analyzes the research methods applied to know the influence of these theories into the Spanish XVII century artistic literature. Mainly in the study of the treatises wrote by Vicente Carducho, Francisco Pacheco and Jusepe Martinez, showing the different paths used by them in order to guide other painters to illustrate the emotions of the soul
The search of the emotional expressivity in the arts during the 17th century, guided both artists and theorist to the analysis of the expression of the passions, the physi-ognomy and the appearance of emotions.
