    Montane and submontane forest patches in the state of Bahia, Brazil, are among the few large and preserved Atlantic Forests remnants. They are strongholds of an almost complete elevational gradient, which harbor both lowland and highland bird taxa. Despite being considered a biodiversity hotspot, few ornithologists have surveyed these forests, especially along elevational gradients. Here we compile bird records acquired from systematic surveys and random observations carried out since the 1980s in a 7,500 ha private protected area: Serra Bonita private reserve. We recorded 368 species, of which 143 are Atlantic Forest endemic taxa. Some 16 and 13 species are threatened at the global and national levels, respectively. If one accounts for subspecies, the number of Brazilian threatened taxa raises to 21. Species composition differs between lower and higher elevations, in which case lowlands harbor Amazonia-related taxa, whereas highlands are the home of Atlantic Forest-related taxa

    Aves em oito áreas de Caatinga no Sul do Ceará e Oeste de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil: composição, riqueza e similaridade

    Rapid bird inventoires made in the Caatinga of southern Ceará and west Pernambuco in July and September 2004 found a total of 209 species. Birds characteristic of the different Caatinga habitats (from dense scrub to arboreal-arbustive forations) accounted for 99 species, followed by open habitats or generalist species (65) and waterbirds (45). We found no geographic pattern in area similarity. Numerically dominant species tend to be small insectivores feeding amid the lower vegetation and granivores such as Columbidae and Coryphospingus pileatus. Generalists such as Cyanocorax cyanopogon were also dominant in some áreas. The very disturbed scrub caatinga around temporary lagoons near Petrolina (Pernambuco) had the most species. The regional avifauna show few larger species such as Cracidae and Psitacidae, while birds associated to more arboreal, structured habitats such as the larger Dendrocolaptidae are also scarce or absent, refecting both direct human exploitation and the replacement of forest-like habitats by lower, less diverse scrub habitat.Inventários rápidos realizados em diferentes pontos no sul do Ceará e oeste de Pernambuco em julho e setembro de 2004 encontraram um total de 209 espécies de aves. A maior riqueza foi de espécies características das várias formações da Caatinga (99 espécies), seguidas por espécies de áreas abertas ou generalistas (65) e aves aquáticas (45). Não foi encontrado um padrão que associasse a similaridade entre áreas a um padrão geográfico. As espécies numericamente dominantes tendem a ser pequenos insetívoros que se alimentam em meio à vegetação baixa e granívoros como Columbidae e Coryphospingus pileatus. Generalistas como Cyanocorax cyanopogon também foram dominantes em alguns pontos. As caatingas muito alteradas ao redor de lagoas temporárias de Petrolina mostraram maior riqueza de espécies. De maneira geral a avifauna regional mostra poucas espécies de maior porte, como Cracidae e Psitacidae maiores, e aquelas dependentes de habitats mais estruturados, como grandes Dendrocolaptidae, refletindo tanto a exploração humana direta como a substituição de habitats de estrutura florestal por formações mais baixas e simples

    Status of the globally threatened forest birds of northeast Brazil

    The Atlantic Forest of northeast Brazil hosts a unique biota which is among the most threatened in the Neotropics. Near-total conversion of forest habitat to sugar cane monocultures has left the region's endemic forest-dependent avifauna marooned in a few highly-fragmented and degraded forest remnants. Here we summarise the current status of 16 globally threatened species based on surveys conducted over the last 11 years. We found a bleak situation for most of these species and consider that three endemics: Glaucidium mooreorum (Pernambuco Pygmy-owl), Cichlocolaptes mazarbarnetti (Cryptic Treehunter) and Philydor novaesi (Alagoas Foliage-gleaner) are most likely globally extinct. Some positive news can, however, be reported for both Leptodon forbesi (White-collared Kite) and Synallaxis infuscata (Pinto's Spinetail) which may warrant re-evaluation of their respective red list statuses. We outline a road map to prioritise conservation interventions in the region directed at preventing the extinction of this suite of threatened bird species and their companion biota.A Floresta Atlântica do Nordeste do Brasil abriga uma biota única que está entre as mais ameaçadas na região Neotropical. A quase total conversão dos habitats florestais em áreas de plantação de cana-de-açúcar deixou a avifauna florestal endêmica da região isolada em poucos remanescentes florestais altamente fragmentados e degradados. Aqui, resumimos o status atual de 16 espécies globalmente ameaçadas baseado em pesquisas conduzidas nos últimos 11 anos. Encontramos uma situação desanimadora para a maioria dessas espécies e consideramos que três espécies endêmicas: Glaucidium mooreorum (caburé-de-pernambuco), Cichlocolaptes mazarbarnetti (gritador-do-nordeste) e Philydor novaesi (limpa-folha-do-nordeste) estejam provavelmente extintas. Algumas notícias positivas podem, no entanto, ser reportadas para Leptodon forbesi (gavião-de-pescoço-branco) e Synallaxis infuscata (tatac), do qual necessitam de uma reavaliação de seus respectivos status na lista vermelha. Descrevemos em linhas gerais um planejamento para priorizar as intervenções conservacionistas na região direcionadas na prevenção da extinção do conjunto das espécies de aves ameaçadas e sua biota associada

    Escolas de governo: um estudo comparativo

    The schools of government perform a central role to the public service of many countries. Despite being a disseminated and well-established phenomenon, the functions and even the concept of schools of government vary. Aiming to portray the functions and characteristics of schools of government around the world and offer a better understanding of them, this paper presents a comparative study of schools of government located across six continents. Based on purposive sampling, eight schools of government were selected to be part of this in depth study: École Nationale d'Administration, ENA – France; Canada School of Public Service, CSPS – Canada; Instituto Nacional de la Administración Pública, INAP – Argentina; Australia and New Zealand School of Government, ANZSOG – Australia and New Zealand; Civil Service College, CSC – Singapore; National School of Government, NSG – South Africa; Direcção Geral da Qualificação dos Trabalhadores em Funções Públicas, INA – Portugal; and Escuela Superior de Administración Pública, ESAP – Colombia. Data collection procedures included interviews and document analysis. Data were analyzed using content and comparative analysis. This study highlights some important dimensions of schools of government including the position within the government, funding, main activities, organizational structure and personnel. Other similarities (e.g. among members of Commonwealth) and possible common trends and innovation challenges are also discussed. Finally, we discuss the results comparing them to previous studies findings.Con el fin de presentar las funciones y características de escuelas públicas alrededor del mundo y ofrecer una mejor comprensión de estas organizaciones, este trabajo presenta un estudio comparativo de las escuelas públicas ubicadas en cinco continentes. Por último, los resultados son comparados con los resultados de investigaciones previas.As Escolas de Governo desempenham um papel central no serviço público de muitos países. Apesar de ser um fenômeno disseminado e bem estabelecido, as funções e até o conceito de Escolas de Governo variam. Com o objetivo de retratar as funções e características das Escolas de Governo ao redor do mundo e oferecer uma melhor compreensão sobre elas, este artigo apresenta um estudo comparativo de Escolas de Governo localizadas em cinco continentes.     Analysis of SOD3 and Akt in ascending aortic aneurysm

    Ascending aortic aneurysm (AsAA) is divided into three different forms: syndromic, familial non-syndromic, and degenerative. Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), occuring in 2% of the population, is the most frequent cardiac congenital abnormality, associated to AsAA. All the different forms of AsAAs are a consequence of cystic medial necrosis (CMN), characterized by apoptotic loss of smooth muscle cells (SMCs), fragmentation of elastic and collagen fibers and increased accumulation of mucoid material. The extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD3) is a Cu/Zn enzyme, affecting redox state and homeostasis of extracellular matrix (ECM) (1). Moreover, the outsidein signalling from ECM modulates intracellular pathways regulating many cellular functions. The multifunctional Akt pathway affects survival and cellular proliferation and has important effects on the cardiovascular function. In this study we examined the relevance of SOD3 and Akt in AsAA pathogenesis. To this aim, the SOD3 and Akt protein levels were evaluated in normal ascending aortic tissues (n=6) and in tissues from AsAAs associated both to tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) (n=6) and BAV (n=6); moreover, we measured SOD3 activity in sera from healthy donors and patients with AsAA. Our data showed a reduction of SOD3 and phospho-Akt (pAkt) protein levels in AsAAs from BAV patients compared to normal donors; on the other hand, no differences emerged in SOD3 activity. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis performed on normal and pathological ascending aortic tissues showed a SOD3 immunostaining in both extracellular space and tunica media cells from normal ascending aortic tissues; conversely, no SOD3 immunostaining was detected in AsAAs tissues from both TAV and BAV patients. Our data show that SOD3 and pAkt could be associated to AsAA pathogenesis and suggest a link between ECM homeostasis and Akt survival pathway

    State of the art of 18F-FDG PET/CT application in inflammation and infection: a guide for image acquisition and interpretation

    Aim The diagnosis, severity and extent of a sterile inflammation or a septic infection could be challenging since there is not one single test able to achieve an accurate diagnosis. The clinical use of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose ([F-18]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging in the assessment of inflammation and infection is increasing worldwide. The purpose of this paper is to achieve an Italian consensus document on [F-18]FDG PET/CT or PET/MRI in inflammatory and infectious diseases, such as osteomyelitis (OM), prosthetic joint infections (PJI), infective endocarditis (IE), prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE), cardiac implantable electronic device infections (CIEDI), systemic and cardiac sarcoidosis (SS/CS), diabetic foot (DF), fungal infections (FI), tuberculosis (TBC), fever and inflammation of unknown origin (FUO/IUO), pediatric infections (PI), inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), spine infections (SI), vascular graft infections (VGI), large vessel vasculitis (LVV), retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF) and COVID-19 infections. Methods In September 2020, the inflammatory and infectious diseases focus group (IIFG) of the Italian Association of Nuclear Medicine (AIMN) proposed to realize a procedural paper about the clinical applications of [F-18]FDG PET/CT or PET/MRI in inflammatory and infectious diseases. The project was carried out thanks to the collaboration of 13 Italian nuclear medicine centers, with a consolidate experience in this field. With the endorsement of AIMN, IIFG contacted each center, and the pediatric diseases focus group (PDFC). IIFG provided for each team involved, a draft with essential information regarding the execution of [F-18]FDG PET/CT or PET/MRI scan (i.e., indications, patient preparation, standard or specific acquisition modalities, interpretation criteria, reporting methods, pitfalls and artifacts), by limiting the literature research to the last 20 years. Moreover, some clinical cases were required from each center, to underline the teaching points. Time for the collection of each report was from October to December 2020. Results Overall, we summarized 291 scientific papers and guidelines published between 1998 and 2021. Papers were divided in several sub-topics and summarized in the following paragraphs: clinical indications, image interpretation criteria, future perspectivess and new trends (for each single disease), while patient preparation, image acquisition, possible pitfalls and reporting modalities were described afterwards. Moreover, a specific section was dedicated to pediatric and PET/MRI indications. A collection of images was described for each indication. Conclusions Currently, [F-18]FDG PET/CT in oncology is globally accepted and standardized in main diagnostic algorithms for neoplasms. In recent years, the ever-closer collaboration among different European associations has tried to overcome the absence of a standardization also in the field of inflammation and infections. The collaboration of several nuclear medicine centers with a long experience in this field, as well as among different AIMN focus groups represents a further attempt in this direction. We hope that this document will be the basis for a "common nuclear physicians' language" throughout all the country

    Case report: biallelic DNMT3A mutations in acute myeloid leukemia

    DNMT3A gene mutations, detected in 20-25% of de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, are typically heterozygous. Biallelic variants are uncommon, affecting ~3% of cases and identifying a worse prognosis. Indeed, two concomitant DNMT3A mutations were recently associated with shorter event-free survival and overall survival in AML. We present an AML case bearing an unusual DNMT3A molecular status, strongly affecting its function and strangely impacting the global genomic methylation profile. A 56-year-old Caucasian male with a diagnosis of AML not otherwise specified (NOS) presented a complex DNMT3A molecular profile consisting of four different somatic variants mapping on different alleles (in trans). 3D modelling analysis predicted the effect of the DNMT3A mutational status, showing that all the investigated mutations decreased or abolished DNMT3A activity. Although unexpected, DNMT3A’s severe loss of function resulted in a global genomic hypermethylation in genes generally involved in cell differentiation. The mechanisms through which DNMT3A contributes to AML remain elusive. We present a unique AML case bearing multiple biallelic DNMT3A variants abolishing its activity and resulting in an unexpected global hypermethylation. The unusual DNMT3A behavior described requires a reflection on its role in AML development and persistence, highlighting the heterogeneity of its deregulation

    Rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART): Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high in-hospital mortality. Alveolar recruitment followed by ventilation at optimal titrated PEEP may reduce ventilator-induced lung injury and improve oxygenation in patients with ARDS, but the effects on mortality and other clinical outcomes remain unknown. This article reports the rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART). Methods/Design: ART is a pragmatic, multicenter, randomized (concealed), controlled trial, which aims to determine if maximum stepwise alveolar recruitment associated with PEEP titration is able to increase 28-day survival in patients with ARDS compared to conventional treatment (ARDSNet strategy). We will enroll adult patients with ARDS of less than 72 h duration. The intervention group will receive an alveolar recruitment maneuver, with stepwise increases of PEEP achieving 45 cmH(2)O and peak pressure of 60 cmH2O, followed by ventilation with optimal PEEP titrated according to the static compliance of the respiratory system. In the control group, mechanical ventilation will follow a conventional protocol (ARDSNet). In both groups, we will use controlled volume mode with low tidal volumes (4 to 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight) and targeting plateau pressure <= 30 cmH2O. The primary outcome is 28-day survival, and the secondary outcomes are: length of ICU stay; length of hospital stay; pneumothorax requiring chest tube during first 7 days; barotrauma during first 7 days; mechanical ventilation-free days from days 1 to 28; ICU, in-hospital, and 6-month survival. ART is an event-guided trial planned to last until 520 events (deaths within 28 days) are observed. These events allow detection of a hazard ratio of 0.75, with 90% power and two-tailed type I error of 5%. All analysis will follow the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: If the ART strategy with maximum recruitment and PEEP titration improves 28-day survival, this will represent a notable advance to the care of ARDS patients.
