Concurrent Image Processing Executive (CIPE)
The design and implementation of a Concurrent Image Processing Executive (CIPE), which is intended to become the support system software for a prototype high performance science analysis workstation are discussed. The target machine for this software is a JPL/Caltech Mark IIIfp Hypercube hosted by either a MASSCOMP 5600 or a Sun-3, Sun-4 workstation; however, the design will accommodate other concurrent machines of similar architecture, i.e., local memory, multiple-instruction-multiple-data (MIMD) machines. The CIPE system provides both a multimode user interface and an applications programmer interface, and has been designed around four loosely coupled modules; (1) user interface, (2) host-resident executive, (3) hypercube-resident executive, and (4) application functions. The loose coupling between modules allows modification of a particular module without significantly affecting the other modules in the system. In order to enhance hypercube memory utilization and to allow expansion of image processing capabilities, a specialized program management method, incremental loading, was devised. To minimize data transfer between host and hypercube a data management method which distributes, redistributes, and tracks data set information was implemented
Twins Bed Rest Project: LBNP/Exercise Minimizes Changes in Lean Leg Mass, Strength and Endurance
Decreases in muscle strength and endurance frequently are observed in non-weightbearing conditions such as bed rest (BR), spaceflight or limb immobilization. Purpose: Ow purpose was to determine if supine treadmill exercise against simulated gravity, by application of lower body negative pressure (LBNP), prevents loss of lean leg mass, strength and endurance during 30 d of 6deg head-down bed rest (BR). Methods: Fifteen pairs of monozygous twins (8 male, 7 female pairs; 26+/-4 yrs; 170+/-12 cm; 62.6+/-11.3 kg; mean+/-SD) were subjects in the present study. One sibling of each pair of twins was randomly assigned to either an exercise (EX) or non-exercise (CON) group. The EX twin walked/jogged on a vertical treadmill within LBNP chamber 6 d/wk using a 40-min interval exercise protocol at 40-80% of pre-BR VO(sub 2peak). LBNP was adjusted individually for each subject such that footward force was between 1.0 and 1.2 times body weight (-53+/-5 mmHg LBNP). The CON twin performed no exercise during BR. Subjects performed isokinetic knee (60 and 120deg/s) and ankle (60deg/s) testing to assess strength and endurance (End) before and after BR. They also had their lean leg mass (L(sub mass)) evaluated by DEXA before and after BR. Results: Changes in peak torque (T(sub pk)) were smaller for flexion (flex) than for extension (ext) after BR and did not differ between groups. Concurrent Image Processing Executive (CIPE). Volume 3: User's guide
CIPE (the Concurrent Image Processing Executive) is both an executive which organizes the parameter inputs for hypercube applications and an environment which provides temporary data workspace and simple real-time function definition facilities for image analysis. CIPE provides two types of user interface. The Command Line Interface (CLI) provides a simple command-driven environment allowing interactive function definition and evaluation of algebraic expressions. The menu interface employs a hierarchical screen-oriented menu system where the user is led through a menu tree to any specific application and then given a formatted panel screen for parameter entry. How to initialize the system through the setup function, how to read data into CIPE symbols, how to manipulate and display data through the use of executive functions, and how to run an application in either user interface mode, are described
Spin dynamics near a putative antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Cu substituted BaFeAs and its relation to high-temperature superconductivity
We present the results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering
measurements on non-superconducting
Ba(FeCu)As, a composition close to a
quantum critical point between AFM ordered and paramagnetic phases. By
comparing these results with the spin fluctuations in the low Cu composition as
well as the parent compound BaFeAs and superconducting
Ba(FeNi)As compounds, we demonstrate that paramagnon-like
spin fluctuations are evident in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of
Ba(FeCu)As, which is distinct from the AFM-like
spin fluctuations in the superconducting compounds. Our observations suggest
that Cu substitution decouples the interaction between quasiparticles and the
spin fluctuations. We also show that the spin-spin correlation length,
, increases rapidly as the temperature is lowered and find
scaling behavior, the hallmark of quantum criticality, at an
antiferromagnetic quantum critical point.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

Adjusting bone mass for differences in projected bone area and other confounding variables: an allometric perspective.
The traditional method of assessing bone mineral density (BMD; given by bone mineral content [BMC] divided by projected bone area [Ap], BMD = BMC/Ap) has come under strong criticism by various authors. Their criticism being that the projected bone "area" (Ap) will systematically underestimate the skeletal bone "volume" of taller subjects. To reduce the confounding effects of bone size, an alternative ratio has been proposed called bone mineral apparent density [BMAD = BMC/(Ap)3/2]. However, bone size is not the only confounding variable associated with BMC. Others include age, sex, body size, and maturation. To assess the dimensional relationship between BMC and projected bone area, independent of other confounding variables, we proposed and fitted a proportional allometric model to the BMC data of the L2-L4 vertebrae from a previously published study. The projected bone area exponents were greater than unity for both boys (1.43) and girls (1.02), but only the boy's fitted exponent was not different from that predicted by geometric similarity (1.5). Based on these exponents, it is not clear whether bone mass acquisition increases in proportion to the projected bone area (Ap) or an estimate of projected bone volume (Ap)3/2. However, by adopting the proposed methods, the analysis will automatically adjust BMC for differences in projected bone size and other confounding variables for the particular population being studied. Hence, the necessity to speculate as to the theoretical value of the exponent of Ap, although interesting, becomes redundant
Thermal Rounding of the Charge Density Wave Depinning Transition
The rounding of the charge density wave depinning transition by thermal noise
is examined. Hops by localized modes over small barriers trigger
``avalanches'', resulting in a creep velocity much larger than that expected
from comparing thermal energies with typical barriers. For a field equal to the
depinning field, the creep velocity is predicted to have a {\em
power-law} dependence on the temperature ; numerical computations confirm
this result. The predicted order of magnitude of the thermal rounding of the
depinning transition is consistent with rounding seen in experiment.Comment: 12 pages + 3 Postscript figure
Pressure-induced collapsed-tetragonal phase in SrCo2As2
We present high-energy x-ray diffraction data under applied pressures up to p
= 29 GPa, neutron diffraction measurements up to p = 1.1 GPa, and electrical
resistance measurements up to p = 5.9 GPa, on SrCo2As2. Our x-ray diffraction
data demonstrate that there is a first-order transition between the tetragonal
(T) and collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phases, with an onset above approximately 6
GPa at T = 7 K. The pressure for the onset of the cT phase and the range of
coexistence between the T and cT phases appears to be nearly temperature
independent. The compressibility along the a-axis is the same for the T and cT
phases whereas, along the c-axis, the cT phase is significantly stiffer, which
may be due to the formation of an As-As bond in the cT phase. Our resistivity
measurements found no evidence of superconductivity in SrCo2As2 for p <= 5.9
GPa and T >= 1.8 K. The resistivity data also show signatures consistent with a
pressure-induced phase transition for p >= 5.5 GPa. Single-crystal neutron
diffraction measurements performed up to 1.1 GPa in the T phase found no
evidence of stripe-type or A-type antiferromagnetic ordering down to 10 K.
Spin-polarized total-energy calculations demonstrate that the cT phase is the
stable phase at high pressure with a c/a ratio of 2.54. Furthermore, these
calculations indicate that the cT phase of SrCo2As2 should manifest either
A-type antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic order.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
The effect of phase fluctuations on the single-particle properties of the underdoped cuprates
We study the effect of order parameter phase fluctuations on the
single-particle properties of fermions in the underdoped cuprate
superconductors using a phenomenological low-energy theory. We identify the
fermion-phase field coupling as the Doppler-shift of the quasiparticle spectrum
induced by the fluctuating superfluid velocity and we calculate the effect of
these fluctuations on the fermion self-energy. We show that the vortex pair
unbinding near the superconducting transition causes a significant broadening
in the fermion spectral function, producing a pseudogap-like feature. We also
discuss the specific heat and show that the phase fluctuation effect is visible
