    A Search For Supernova Remnants in The Nearby Spiral Galaxy M74 (NGC 628)

    We have identified nine new SNR candidates in M74 with [S II]/Hα\alpha \geq 0.4 as the basic criterion. We obtain [S II]/Hα\alpha ratio in the range from 0.40 to 0.91 and Hα\alpha intensities from 2.8 ×\times 101510^{-15} erg cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} to 1.7 ×\times 101410^{-14} erg cm2^{-2} s1^{-1}. We also present spectral follow-up observations of the SNR candidates and can confirm only three of them (SNR2, SNR3, and SNR5). The lack of confirmation for the rest might be due to the contamination by the nearby H II emission regions as well as due to the inaccurate positioning of the long slit on these objects. In addition, we search the ChandraChandra Observatory archival data for the X-ray counterparts to the optically identified candidates. We find positional coincidence with only three SNR candidates, SNR1, SNR2, and SNR8. The spectrum of SNR2 yields a shock temperature of 10.8 keV with an ionization timescale of 1.6 ×\times 1010^{10} s cm3^{-3} indicating a relatively young remnant in an early Sedov phase which is not supported by our optical wavelength analysis. Given the high luminosity of 1039^{39} erg s1^{-1} and the characteristics of the X-ray spectrum, we favor an Ultra Luminous X-ray Source interpretation for this source associated with an SNR. We calculate an X-ray flux upper limit of 9.0 ×\times 101510^{-15} erg cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} for the rest of the SNRs including spectroscopically identified SNR3 and SNR5.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to be published in A&

    Closed-Form Green's Function Representations for Mutual Coupling Calculations Between Apertures on a Perfect Electric Conductor Circular Cylinder Covered with Dielectric Layers

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Closed-form Green’s function (CFGF) representations are developed for tangential magnetic current sources to calculate the mutual coupling between apertures on perfectly conducting circular cylinders covered with dielectric layers. The new representations are obtained by first rewriting the corresponding spectral domain Green’s function representations in a different form (so that accurate results for electrically large cylinders, and along the axial line of a cylinder can be obtained). Then, the summation over the cylindrical eigenmodes is calculated efficiently. Finally, the resulting expressions are transformed to the spatial domain using a modified two-level generalized pencil of function method. Numerical results are presented showing good agreement when compared to CST Microwave Studio results

    TIGRE is an advanced telescope for gamma-ray astronomy with a few arcmin resolution. From 0.3 to 10 MeV it is a Compton telescope. Above 1 MeV, its multi-layers of double sided silicon strip detectors allow for Compton recoil electron tracking and the unique determination for incident photon direction. From 10 to 100 MeV the tracking feature is utilized for gamma-ray pair event reconstruction.     Investigations of Ancient Terra-cotta Sarcophagi, Excavated in Enez (Ainos) Turkey, by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis

    Ten terra-cotta sarcophagi, together with a terra-cotta aryballos (perfume jar), excavated in Su Terazisi necropolis of Enez-Turkey (Ancient Ainos), were investigated by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), to determine the concentration of thirty two chemical elements: Na, K, Ca, Fe, Sc, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, Th and U. The dataset was submitted to multivariate statistical analysis. The classification was done by cluster analysis. The results demonstrated the occurrence of two different groups of terra-cotta samples. Group I contains nine sarcophagi and terra-cotta aryballos whereas group II contains only one sample (E09-ST5-M26). High correlations between La and Ce (r2 = 0.92), and U and Th (r2 = 0.91) indicated that local clay was used for manufacturing the terra-cotta sarcophagi and aryballos but probably the claybed used for E09-ST5-M26 was different from that of others

    Excitation energy-dependent nature of Raman scattering spectrum in GaInNAs/GaAs quantum well structures

    The excitation energy-dependent nature of Raman scattering spectrum, vibration, electronic or both, has been studied using different excitation sources on as-grown and annealed n- and p-type modulation-doped Ga(1 − x)In(x)N(y)As(1 − y)/GaAs quantum well structures. The samples were grown by molecular beam technique with different N concentrations (y = 0%, 0.9%, 1.2%, 1.7%) at the same In concentration of 32%. Micro-Raman measurements have been carried out using 532 and 758 nm lines of diode lasers, and the 1064 nm line of the Nd-YAG laser has been used for Fourier transform-Raman scattering measurements. Raman scattering measurements with different excitation sources have revealed that the excitation energy is the decisive mechanism on the nature of the Raman scattering spectrum. When the excitation energy is close to the electronic band gap energy of any constituent semiconductor materials in the sample, electronic transition dominates the spectrum, leading to a very broad peak. In the condition that the excitation energy is much higher than the band gap energy, only vibrational modes contribute to the Raman scattering spectrum of the samples. Line shapes of the Raman scattering spectrum with the 785 and 1064 nm lines of lasers have been observed to be very broad peaks, whose absolute peak energy values are in good agreement with the ones obtained from photoluminescence measurements. On the other hand, Raman scattering spectrum with the 532 nm line has exhibited only vibrational modes. As a complementary tool of Raman scattering measurements with the excitation source of 532 nm, which shows weak vibrational transitions, attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy has been also carried out. The results exhibited that the nature of the Raman scattering spectrum is strongly excitation energy-dependent, and with suitable excitation energy, electronic and/or vibrational transitions can be investigated

    The Indirect Effects of Servant Leadership Behavior on Organizational Citizenship Behavior and Job Performance: Organizational Justice as a Mediator

    The relationship between leader and followers plays a vital role, particularly in educational institutions where a keen understanding of human character and high level of social interaction ought to be facilitated. For this reason, in stark contrast to contemporary leaders who see people only as units of production or expendable resources in a profit and loss statement, servant leadership focuses on meeting the needs of followers, making them reach their maximum potential and so perform optimally in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives. This study examines the effects of servant leadership behaviors of private college principals on teachers’ organizational citizenship behavior and job performance. Using 300 respondents from the private education institutes in Turkey, servant leadership behavior is examined for its indirect effects on organizational citizenship behavior and job performance by its impact on organizational justice. Organizational justice acts as a mediator between the variables in question. All the results are in support of the studied mediation effects. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed

    The Columbia, Missouri, Heat Island Experiment (COHIX) and the Influence of a Small City on the Local Climatology

    The heat island effect is a well known feature in the microclimate of urban areas but only a few studies have addressed the effect for smaller urban areas. We examine here the impact of Columbia, Missouri and the University of Missouri campus on the microclimate (temperature and precipitation) of central Missouri. We purchased twenty Radio Shack® digital Max/Min thermometers and ten standard raised-edge rain gauges and these were given to students, staff, and faculty participants who were chosen for their reliability to provide daily data over the course of a year, site the instrument, and their location (in order to provide reasonable coverage locally). We also included information provided by automated and cooperative weather stations, and the weather station at the regional airport located 11 km (7 miles) southeast of Columbia. Our results indicate that the city has no discernable impact on the distribution of monthly precipitation totals. We found a distinct urban influence on the local surface temperatures, and the inner city region and the urbanized area of south Columbia were approximately 2 - 3 oF (1.0 - 1.5 oC) warmer in the mean than the surrounding environment. This difference grows to 3 - 6 oF (1.5 - 3.5 oC) when comparing the mean of the warmest station in the city to that of coolest station outside Columbia. We also observed a seasonal influence, as the heat island effect was more evident in the mean monthly maximum (minimum) temperatures during the warmest (coldest) months
