Synthesis And Characterization Of Superhydrophobic Alumina Membrane Via Chemical And Morphological Modification

    Get PDF
Hydrophobicity is commonly known to have “water repellent” feature on a surface. Although ceramic membranes possess superior mechanical strength, excellent chemical resistance and great thermal stability, the natural hydrophilic feature of ceramic membranes limits their applications. Membrane modification by silane grafting has been widely reported due to its ease of handling, but the growth of hydrophobic structure introduces additional resistance in mass transfer. The major aim of this study is to synthesis superhydrophobic membrane with minimum membrane resistance. The effects of (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetra hydrodecyl) triethoxysilane (HFDS) concentration on mass transfer resistance of superhydrophobic alumina membrane is studied as well. Besides direct grafting on membrane, HFDS was grafted on the additional thin alumina films prepared by sol-gel method with calcinations or steam treatment in order to reduce pore blockage. Alumina supports were first directly grafted with different volume ratios HFDS in ethanol (0.1-2.5 ml of HFDS:50 ml of ethanol). The HFDS grafted membranes showed static water contact angle in the range of 85.84 o (0.1ml of HFDS) to 138.91 o (1.0 ml of HFDS). The increment of HFDS concentration, however, caused membrane pore blockage due to the penetration of HFDS chain

Rapid changes in market demands require manufacturing companies to be responsive and at the same time sustainable in order to compete and survive in their industry. Therefore, the determination of the fundamental elements for responsiveness and sustainability are essential in manufacturing company to remain competitive in the rapid changes market. Up to this date, there is no integrated model of responsiveness and sustainability for manufacturing operations. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop an integrated model between manufacturing responsiveness (MR) and manufacturing sustainability (MS) in the context of manufacturing operations. The fundamental elements of MR and MS has been determine through literature study and the model has been developed based on the concept of Input-Transformation-Output system in manufacturing. The results show that the fundamental elements of MR and MS consist of four elements: (i) Driver, (ii) Enabler, (iii) Measure, and (iv) Impact. Then, the components for MR and MS are determined using literature study and Pareto’s 80/20 rule. Next, they were verified using email surveys and face-to-face interviews in automotive-based manufacturing companies for avoiding conflict between the proposed components with the real-context of manufacturing. The same method (literature study and Pareto’s 80/20 rule) were used to determine the integrated components. Then, integrated model was developed and validated based on the Measure’s components using case study approach. Six automotive manufacturing companies from U.S.A, Germany, and Japan were chosen for validation process. The integrated components of MR and MS has been validated in their relationship and the data are collected from the annual report of the these six automotive manufacturing companies. The results show that all the integrated components have the relation with MR and MS but at the different level which are strong and inconsistent relationship. Thus, this study concludes that the MR and MS have four fundamental elements and sharing their measurable components that have affected their own isolated components

For many years, the value of safety management practice has been the subject of research attention in many sectors in Malaysia in order to achieve a positive workplace safety climate. The practice of safety management among accredited centers in the education sector, however, has hardly been examined. This study was therefore conducted in Johor, Malaysia, to investigate the elements of the safety management practices in the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET). This research included seven participants consisting of safety and health (SH) coordinators from each accredited TVET center in Johor, Malaysia. Via interview data collection, this study used the full qualitative approach. The outcome of the thematic analysis showed that there are ten key elements of safety management practices that have become factors among accredited TVET centers in Johor, namely management commitment, safety policy, safety committee, instructor involvement, safety rules and procedure, safety training, safety audit, risk management, communication and feedback and also safety promotion. The accredited center is advised to pay attention to these ten elements in order to improve safety management practices in the TVET sector

As the halal food industry grows, the discourse on the managerial issues in the industry becomes increasingly pivotal. Similar to other bodies, halal fraternities encounter managerial problem that is the insufficiency of quality management in the industry. In tandem with the popular concept of management expounded for respectful bodies named learning organization, this paper attempts to ascertain its application in two halal food companies. The discourse on the occurrence of learning organization in other entities is regular. Nevertheles, in halal food industry; the area stands remote from the hive of scrutiny. This study delve into two established halal manufacturers in an attempt to evaluate the occurrence of the purported characteristics based on the understanding of learning organization introduced by Ortenblad (2002). The meant understanding encompasses learning at workplace, the climate for learning, learning structure, and organizational learning. Through interview, this study ascertains the level of embracement for the characteristics intentionally and unintentionally achieved in both companies. The result shows that both halal food companies do practice some elements suggested in the purported learning organization. This study opines that learning organization can flourish in halal bodies with the condition that proper and serious initiatives are taken to implement it

Comparative Advantage of Malaysian Wood Products in the European Market

    Get PDF
Malaysia is currently one of the world's top tropical timber producers. The Malaysian wood industry has grown tremendously since past decades. Besides producing wood products for the domestic markets, most of the wood products have been exported to other countries including Europe. We used the framework developed by Balassa (1965) to examine the comparative advantage of Malaysian timber products in the European market. The results implied that for the overall performance, Malaysian wood products have a noticeable advantage in the European market in comparison to other global producers. Among several Malaysian timber products, only five of them have a high comparative advantage. We discovered that the high comparative advantage products are the secondary processing products and ìmechanized mass market productsî. While the revealed comparative advantage is very dependents of the quantity traded, a high quantity does not imply a high comparative advantage. We found that the factors such as abundant resources, communication and technology, production cost, and indeed demand pattern are essential in influencing the comparative advantage of the products.wood products, Malaysia, Europe, comparative advantage, Balassa approach

Banjarmasin holds rich history and culture along its riversides which is supposedly to be conserved. Regarding this, the Department of Tourism of Banjarmasin City created a program Called Kota Pusaka and are willing to develop Sungai Jingah’s riverside settlement to become a Tourism Village. In this work of planning the writer applies Infill Design method to synthesize designs corresponding the surrounding houses, whether it would be matching or given the context of nowadays technology and materials. Infill Design also allows for contrasting designs to be formed. The purpose of applying Infill Design method is to add the functions of tourism into the existing settlement. The results are that the area able to be built on are empy sites and sites with broken down houses. The mass shapes for matching and compatible buildings and elements are gable roof or stepped-up roof. The mass shapes for contrasting buildings and elements are composed of transformed shapes with folds and rolls. Due to the increased number of immunocompromised patients, infections by Candida albicans have significantly increased in recent years. C. albicans transition from yeast to germ tubes is an essential factor for virulence. In this study we noted that Lee\u27s medium, commonly used to induce filamentation, contained 500-fold more biotin than needed for growth. Thus, we investigated the effects of excess biotin on growth rate and filamentation by C. albicans in different media. At 37 °C, excess biotin (4 µM) enhanced germ tube formation (GTF) ca. 10-fold in both Lee\u27s medium and a defined glucose proline medium, and ca. 4-fold in 1% serum. Desthiobiotin, KAPA, and lipoic acid also stimulated GTF and are able to fulfill the biotin auxotrophy requirement. The mechanism by which excess biotin enhances GTF is still unknown except to note that equivalent levels of biotin are needed to create an internal supply of stored biotin. Biotin did not restore filamentation for any of the four known filamentation defective mutants tested. We also found that biotin auxotrophy is not temperature dependent nor influenced by the presence of 5% CO₂. Biotin starvation upregulated the biotin biosynthetic genes BIO2, BIO3, and BIO4 by 11-, 1500-, and 150-fold, respectively, and BIO2p is predicted to be mitochondrion-localized. Based on our findings, we suggest that biotin has two roles in the physiology of C. albicans, one as an enzymatic cofactor and another as a morphological regulator. Advisor: Kenneth W. Nickerso
