    Plume motion and large-scale circulation in a cylindrical Rayleigh-B\'enard cell

    We used the time correlation of shadowgraph images to determine the angle Θ\Theta of the horizontal component of the plume velocity above (below) the center of the bottom (top) plate of a cylindrical Rayleigh-B\'enard cell of aspect ratio Γ≡D/L=1\Gamma \equiv D/L = 1 (DD is the diameter and L≃87L \simeq 87 mm the height) in the Rayleigh-number range 7×107≤R≤3×1097\times 10^7 \leq R \leq 3\times 10^{9} for a Prandtl number σ=6\sigma = 6. We expect that Θ\Theta gives the direction of the large-scale circulation. It oscillates time-periodically. Near the top and bottom plates Θ(t)\Theta(t) has the same frequency but is anti-correlated.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Power-Law Behavior of Power Spectra in Low Prandtl Number Rayleigh-Benard Convection

    The origin of the power-law decay measured in the power spectra of low Prandtl number Rayleigh-Benard convection near the onset of chaos is addressed using long time numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations in cylindrical domains. The power-law is found to arise from quasi-discontinuous changes in the slope of the time series of the heat transport associated with the nucleation of dislocation pairs and roll pinch-off events. For larger frequencies, the power spectra decay exponentially as expected for time continuous deterministic dynamics.Comment: (10 pages, 6 figures

    Singularity in the boundary resistance between superfluid 4^4He and a solid surface

    We report new measurements in four cells of the thermal boundary resistance RR between copper and 4^4He below but near the superfluid-transition temperature TλT_\lambda. For 10−7≤t≡1−T/Tλ≤10−410^{-7} \leq t \equiv 1 - T/T_\lambda \leq 10^{-4} fits of R=R0txb+B0R = R_0 t^{x_b} + B_0 to the data yielded xb≃0.18x_b \simeq 0.18, whereas a fit to theoretical values based on the renormalization-group theory yielded xb=0.23x_b = 0.23. Alternatively, a good fit of the theory to the data could be obtained if the {\it amplitude} of the prediction was reduced by a factor close to two.     Spiral Defect Chaos in Large Aspect Ratio Rayleigh-Benard Convection

    We report experiments on convection patterns in a cylindrical cell with a large aspect ratio. The fluid had a Prandtl number of approximately 1. We observed a chaotic pattern consisting of many rotating spirals and other defects in the parameter range where theory predicts that steady straight rolls should be stable. The correlation length of the pattern decreased rapidly with increasing control parameter so that the size of a correlated area became much smaller than the area of the cell.     Gamma-ray halos as a measure of intergalactic magnetic fields: a classical moment problem

    The presence of weak intergalactic magnetic fields can be studied by their effect on electro-magnetic cascades induced by multi-TeV gamma-rays in the cosmic radiation background. Small deflections of secondary electrons and positrons as the cascade develops extend the apparent size of the emission region of distant TeV gamma-ray sources. These gamma-ray halos can be resolvable in imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes and serve as a measure of the intergalactic magnetic field strength and coherence length. We present a method of calculating the gamma-ray halo for isotropically emitting sources by treating magnetic deflections in the cascade as a diffusion process. With this ansatz the moments of the halo follow from a set of simple diffusion-cascade equations. The reconstruction of the angular distribution is then equivalent to a classical moment problem.     Microcomputer Based Digital Image Processing System Developed To Count And Size Laser-Generated Small Particle Images

    A microcomputer-based digital image processing system has been developed to count and size laser-generated small particle images. Processing rates of 5 to 600 frames per minute were achieved by utilizing a real-time digital image processor. Particles from 7 to 700 µm in the plane of focus were counted and sized. A major emphasis in this work was to determine the basic problems and limitations involved with using a digital image processing scheme to accurately size particles. Areas that were investigated include the effect of the threshold level on measured particle size, particle boundary diffraction gray-level gradients, and geometric nonlinearities introduced by the vidicon camera. A Laser Electro-Optics Ltd. calibration reticle containing simulated particles from 5.29 to 92.75 µm in diameter was used as the basis for an in-depth calibration process. It was determined that various inherent problems with image processing systems limit their accuracy unless compensation is made. Decalibration techniques were used to correct for these inaccuracies. After correction, an average error of less than 1.0% was found for 25 to 100 µm particles. A 2.8% error was found in the experimentally determined distribution of 52.8 µm polystyrene microspheres

    Isentropic Curves at Magnetic Phase Transitions

    Experiments on cold atom systems in which a lattice potential is ramped up on a confined cloud have raised intriguing questions about how the temperature varies along isentropic curves, and how these curves intersect features in the phase diagram. In this paper, we study the isentropic curves of two models of magnetic phase transitions- the classical Blume-Capel Model (BCM) and the Fermi Hubbard Model (FHM). Both Mean Field Theory (MFT) and Monte Carlo (MC) methods are used. The isentropic curves of the BCM generally run parallel to the phase boundary in the Ising regime of low vacancy density, but intersect the phase boundary when the magnetic transition is mainly driven by a proliferation of vacancies. Adiabatic heating occurs in moving away from the phase boundary. The isentropes of the half-filled FHM have a relatively simple structure, running parallel to the temperature axis in the paramagnetic phase, and then curving upwards as the antiferromagnetic transition occurs. However, in the doped case, where two magnetic phase boundaries are crossed, the isentrope topology is considerably more complex

    Safe Sleep Knowledge and Use of Provided Cribs in a Crib Delivery Program

    Introduction. Risk of infant sleep-related death can be reducedthrough safe sleep practices. Barriers to infant safe sleep have beenmitigated through education and crib distribution, however, previousstudies have not explored whether distributed cribs are put to use. Methods. In a rural Michigan county, the Great Start Sleep Initiativesupplied cribs and education shortly after infant birth to familieswith high-risk of infant mortality, as assessed through comprehensiveinterviews with families by program staff. Participant knowledgewas evaluated using structured pre- and post-assessments beforeand after education. Further, a home visit was conducted to evaluatethe infant’s sleeping environment. Data from the program, collectedbetween January 2012 and December 2014, were evaluated. Results. Cribs and concomitant education were delivered to 75caregivers. Knowledge of safe sleep practices increased significantlyat follow-up with 67 caregivers (89%) affirming back positioning,68 (91%) endorsing removal of unsafe items or soft objects, suchas blankets, from the sleeping area, and 42 (56%) renouncing bedsharing.At the home visit, 74 caregivers (99%) were using a crib toput their infant down to sleep, 70 (93%) were using the providedcrib, and 67 (89%) had no unsafe items in the child’s sleeping area. Conclusion. Providing education to high-risk mothersresulted in improved safe sleep knowledge and providedcribs are used in these homes. KS J Med 2017;10(3):59-61

    Contested water rights in post-apartheid South Africa: The struggle for water at catchment level

    The National Water Act (1998) of South Africa provides strong tools to redress inequities inherited from the past. However, a decade after the introduction of the Act, access to water is still skewed along racial lines. This paper analyses the various ways in which the Water Act is contested, based on empirical data detailing the interactions between smallholder farmers and commercial farmers in a case-study catchment in KwaZulu-Natal Province. The paper argues that the legacy of the apartheid era still dominates the current political and economical reality and shows how the redistribution of water resources is contested by the elite. The paper identifies several issues that prevent the smallholder farmers from claiming their rights, including the institutional arrangements in former homelands, the ‘community approach’ of Government and NGOs, the disconnect between land and water reform processes, and historically-entrenched forms of behaviour of the various actors. The paper concludes that the difficulties encountered in the water reform process are illustrative for what is happening in the society at large and raises the question as to what price is being paid to maintain the current status quo in the division of wealth?Keywords: natural resources, water reform, water rights, smallholder farmers, legal pluralism, South Afric
