    Get PDF
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Economics from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThis study uses two micro-level datasets to perform an empirical assessment of the role of education on the decision to be corrupt. Bribe payments are used as proxy for corruption. The results show that increasing the level of schooling increases the propensity to bribe. A model of costs and benefits is assumed and regressions are ran to evaluate the effect of education on an intrinsic and an extrinsic cost of being corrupt, measured by justifiability of corruption and perception of corruption, respectively. The estimates show education increases one’s intrinsic cost (decreases justifiability) and decreases one’s extrinsic cost (increases perception)

Detection of Emerging Words in Portuguese Tweets

    Get PDF
This paper tackles the problem of detecting emerging words on a language, based on social networks content. It proposes an approach for detecting new words on Twitter, and reports the achieved results for a collection of 8 million Portuguese tweets. This study uses geolocated tweets, collected between January 2018 and June 2019, and written in the Portuguese territory. The first six months of the data were used to define an initial vocabulary on known words, and the following 12 months were used for identifying new words, thus testing our approach. The set of resulting words were manually analyzed, revealing a number of distinct events, and suggesting that Twitter may be a valuable resource for researching neology, and the dynamics of a language

Fluorescence Properties of Rare-Earth-Doped Sol-Gel Glasses

    Get PDF
Glasses may be prepared by sol-gel processing over a wide range of compositions and thick multilayer deposits may be used as waveguides for integrated optics. Doping these layers with rare-earth (RE) ions enables the fabrication of active devices for optical amplifiers; the incorporation of these ions into nanocrystallites offers possibilities for increased dopant concentration without fluorescence quenching, improved spectroscopic performance and high quantum yields. Rare-earth (RE) ions such as erbium (Er3+), ytterbium (Yb3+), neodymium (Nd3+), thulium (Tm3+), holmium (Ho3+) and praseodymium (Pr3+) have been widely used in optical applications and cover a range of wavelengths ranging from UV-visible to the near infrared. This chapter includes basic principles of fluorescence in RE doped glasses, fluorescence lifetimes, quantum yields and Judd-Ofelt analysis. A few information is given about the preparation and characterization of glasses, thin films and glass-ceramics (nanocrystallites embedded in glass matrix) prepared by sol-gel processing. The growth of nanocrystals in glassy sol-gel films through suitable heat treatments can avoid the influence of high phonon energy of silica glasses. The characterization of such materials can be evaluated by optical techniques, namely UV-Visible, FTIR, among other additional techniques that include Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)

Objective: Verify the effects of a Health Educational Program in patients diagnosed with COPD. After informing the objectives of the study and the ethical aspects, the participants did an evaluation of pulmonary function, exercise tolerance capacity, life quality, Activities of Daily Living (ADV), dyspnea, anxiety and depression. Afterwards the individuals of the Control Group received an information manual, and the ones included in the experimental group, in addition to the manual, were also involved in 6 sessions of education. After 8 weeks every patient was re-evaluated. The significance level used in these statistical tests was a=0.05 (confidence interval of 95%). Results: The analysis of the difference of gains between the groups revealed statistically significant in the variables life quality (p<0.001), ADV (p<0.001) and depression (p<0.001). Regarding the exercise tolerance capacity both groups improved significantly but the difference of gains wasn’t statistically significant (p=0.289), such as in the variable anxiety (p=0.960). Conclusion: This study seems to reveal that the educational program was effective in the variables life quality, ADV and depression

Re-examining green purchase behaviour and the green consumer profile: new evidences

    Get PDF
Purpose – This paper aims to re-examine the determinants of ecologically conscious consumer behaviour (ECCB) by analysing the green consumer profile (socio-demographic and psychographic variables), building on the work of Straughan and Roberts. Moreover, the study explores the determinants of effective green purchase behaviour (GPB) considering ECCB and green purchase intention (GPI) previously evaluated. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted a quantitative study based on an online survey. Data collection was implemented in two different phases: in the first phase ECCB, GPI and profiling variables were measured. One month later, the same respondents evaluated their effective GPB. Through path analysis the effects of ECCB and GPI on GPB were measured. Findings – The results show that psychographic variables, with emphasis on perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE) and altruism, are more relevant than socio-demographics in explaining ECCB. The consumers with higher ECCB have shown higher green purchase intention (GPI). ECCB has a positive impact on GBP, higher than GPI, which in turn mediates that relationship. Research limitations/implications – The research results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further. Practical implications – The paper provides evidence that whenever ecological consciousness is high, the gap between GPI and GPB is less evident, which provides clear evidence that an understanding of green consumer profiles and behaviour can enable organizations to respond better to new management challenges. Originality/value – This paper provides a comprehensive understanding about the green consumer profile and behaviour, including the effect of GPI on GPB, and which contribute to the coordination of future marketing strategies to target this segment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The market of green products is increasing all over the world, especially in food category that shows a great demand for biologic and organics. The aim of this study is to better understand the why consumers buy organic products, more specifically environmental concern, health consciousness and age The empirical evidence is based on an online survey, using a sample of 279, regular shoppers of organic products in Portugal and Spain. The results show there is a positive relation between environmental concern, health consciousness and green purchase behavior. Environmental concern is stronger than health to explain this relation. Also age is a predictor of green purchase behavior and older consumers with more than 35 years purchase more organics than younger consumers. For managers and marketers, the study enables to develop better marketing strategies to address these consumers and to enhance environmental concern, health and age to foster organics consumption

Experimental evaluation of ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 for data-intensive body sensor networks

This paper presents results concerning an experimental performance evaluation of ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 networks applied to the transport of data-intensive traffic generated by body sensor network applications. The experimental platform is based on the Z-Stack and TIMAC software stacks and the CC2530 device, from Texas Instruments. Three quality of service metrics are evaluated: goodput, delivery ratio and delay. Results are provided for both star and tree topologies. It was observed that the overhead introduced by the stack implementation has a significant impact on the performance results. Overall, the performance of the ZigBee star topology was very good, even in the worst conditions, provided the acknowledgement mechanism was enabled. A router deadlock problem detected in other ZigBee implementations was not observed with the Z-Stack. However, we identified two different situations, triggered by periods of high traffic load, on which the ZigBee router stops relaying packets, causing a significant degradation on the network performance.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
