Jon Adams, Adrian Beeler, Nathaniel Connell, Brianna Lindsay Dr. Nititham Sociology of Education: SOC 333 March 28, 2019 Neoliberalism, Communal Learning and Entrepreneurism Their Effect Educational Systems In “Learning to Share: Pedagogy, open learning, and the sharing economy”, Carfagna ( 2018) discusses class conflict, consciousness and consumption through open learning and pedagogic discourse. Carfagna rejects common beliefs held of how an educational experience holds value and how one should be administered. In our poster and presentation, our group will examine some of the main points of Carfagna’s article in the context of neoliberal approaches to education in the sharing economy, how students learn entrepreneurial and communal approaches through non-traditional education, and finally, how pedagogic discourse effects educational settings. We will discuss the scholarship in the field, decisions made in teaching the material, and directions for future research. 10 keywords for the presentation Pedagogy: The method or type of teaching. Entrepreneurism: Frame that encourages individual success through the means of business operations. In the article it is described as a skill which can help a person “accomplish anything” Conflict Theory: Made Famous by Karl Marx, it is the idea that society is in a constant state of conflict as a result of limited resources. This then forces society into two major groups, the property owners (bourgeoisie), and the exploited workers (proletariat) Capitalism: A form of political system which is dependent on the idea of wage and labor. Discrete-Ordinates Modelling of the Radiative Heat Transfer in a Pilot-Scale Rotary Kiln

This paper presents work focused on the development, evaluation and use of a 3D model for investigation of the radiative heat transfer in rotary kilns. The model applies a discrete-ordinates method to solve the radiative transfer equation considering emission, absorption and scattering of radiation by gas species and particles for cylindrical and semi-cylindrical enclosures. Modelling input data on temperature, particle distribution and gas composition in the radial, axial and angular directions are experimentally gathered in a down-scaled version of a rotary kiln. The model is tested in its capability to predict the radiative intensity and heat flux to the inner wall of the furnace and good agreement was found when compared to measurements. Including the conductive heat transfer through the furnace wall, the model also satisfactorily predicts the intermediate wall temperature. The work also includes a first study on the effect of the incident radiative heat flux to the different surfaces while adding a cold bed material. With further development of the model, it can be used to study the heat transfer in full-scale rotary kilns

Evaluation of school-based arts education programmes in Australian schools

This report presents evaluations of four Australian school-based arts programmes: Arts@Direk (SA), Boys’ Business (NT), Indigenous Music Education Programme (NT), and SCRAYP – Youth Arts with an Edge (Vic). Arts@Direk and SCRAYP provided a focus on drama, while Boys’ Business and Indigenous Music Education Programme (IMEP) concentrated on music. There was a range of ages from Year 4 to Year 10 and a diverse range of backgrounds amongst the participating students. The study investigated the impact of each arts programme on students’ academic progress, engagement with learning and school attendance. It also considered which attributes of arts programmes were of particular benefit to the students

Brain macrophages in human cortical contusions as indicator of survival period

The aim of this study was to establish a morphologic time scheme with which cases of cerebral contusion with unknown survival periods can be dated. Our study of 275 cases was limited to qualitative and quantitative changes in macrophages. The appearance of macrophages and their distribution as well as their content of neutral fat, esterified cholesterol, erythrocytes, siderin, hematoidin, and ceroid were correlated with the survival period. For each cytologic criterium, the observation period, distribution-free limits of tolerance, and relative frequency of identification in different survival periods were determined, and the limits of confidence calculated. The findings permit the dating of trauma in cases with unknown survival periods. Moreover, the probability of this dating was calculated

Hetereogeneity in Neuronal Intrinsic Properties: A Possible Mechanism for Hub-Like Properties of the Rat Anterior Cingulate Cortex during Network Activity.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is vital for a range of brain functions requiring cognitive control and has highly divergent inputs and outputs, thus manifesting as a hub in connectomic analyses. Studies show diverse functional interactions within the ACC are associated with network oscillations in the β (20-30 Hz) and γ (30-80 Hz) frequency range. Oscillations permit dynamic routing of information within cortex, a function that depends on bandpass filter-like behavior to selectively respond to specific inputs. However, a putative hub region such as ACC needs to be able to combine inputs from multiple sources rather than select a single input at the expense of others. To address this potential functional dichotomy, we modeled local ACC network dynamics in the rat in vitro. Modal peak oscillation frequencies in the β- and γ-frequency band corresponded to GABAAergic synaptic kinetics as seen in other regions; however, the intrinsic properties of ACC principal neurons were highly diverse. Computational modeling predicted that this neuronal response diversity broadened the bandwidth for filtering rhythmic inputs and supported combination-rather than selection-of different frequencies within the canonical γ and β electroencephalograph bands. These findings suggest that oscillating neuronal populations can support either response selection (routing) or combination, depending on the interplay between the kinetics of synaptic inhibition and the degree of heterogeneity of principal cell intrinsic conductances.Wellcome Trus

Is high intensity laser therapy more effective than other physical therapy modalities for treating knee osteoarthritis? A systematic review and network meta-analysis

BACKGROUND: The use of physical therapy modalities, especially high intensity laser therapy (HILT), for individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is still controversial. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of HILT to other physical therapy modalities on symptoms and function in individuals with KOA. METHODS: Six databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EBSCO, and PEDro) were searched in March 2022. Included studies were randomized controlled trials involving HILT conducted on individuals with KOA. The end-trial weighted mean difference (WMD) and standard deviations (SD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were analyzed. RESULTS: Ten studies with 580 participants were obtained, of which nine were included in the final network meta-analysis. In terms of relieving pain, HILT demonstrated the highest probability of being among the most effective treatments, with surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) = 100%, and compared to a control (placebo laser or exercise or a combination of both) on the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain it demonstrated significant benefits (WMD 1.66, 95% CI 1.48–1.84). For improving self-reported function, as measured by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) total scores, the HILT SUCRA value led with 98.9%. When individuals with KOA were treated by HILT, the improvement in stiffness was statistically significant (WMD 0.78, 95% CI 0.52–1.04) but the amount of improvement was smaller than the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). CONCLUSION: The current evidence suggests that HILT may be more effective than other physical therapy modalities for improving pain and function in individuals with KOA. The New Insider Dealing Legislation - A Confusing Outcome

This paper assess the impact of new insider dealing legislation on companies, brokers' analysts, professional fund managers and private investors. The revised legislation came into effect in April 1994. Our main conclusions are: the new legislation is open to many interpretations. In our view, the probability of successful conviction is negligible. There is already a need for a review of the implication of the legislation, to include an assessment of whether civil, rather than criminal, prosecution may present a more workable solution the new legislation has succeeded in forcing companies to release new information into the marketplace through formal announcements. While this may have resulted in a fairer environment, it may also have damaged the efficiency of the stock market, in the sense that more knowable information is not reflected in share prices. There have been many instances of sharp falls in share prices in response to official announcements. Solutions will need to be found if stock market credibility is to be upheld
