Studies of lignin and polysaccharides recovery from kraft liquor for biotechnological applications

According to the biorefinery concept, this study has the objective of evaluating alternatives for the valorization of all the kraft liquor fractions. This liquor consists mainly in lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Currently, cellulose pulp industries recover the cooking chemicals by burning and energy is introduced into the process. Sustainable development guidelines, regarding the costs and wastes reduction and biotechnology principles may present new solutions for the production of valuable products. In this study, two methods for the polysaccharides extraction, in three different pH conditions, are presented. The only difference between these methods is the solvent applied: ethanol and 1,4‐dioxane. All the samples were maintained 24 h at 298 K. After a filtration step, the solid fraction resultant from the ethanol treatment had a carbohydrate content of 40.51%, 44.64% and 49.53%, for pH values of 3, 4 and 6, respectively. The treatment with 1,4‐dioxane, reached the following values: 21.17%, 18.41% and 29.73% for the same pH values. These results were obtained with HPLC analysis after polysaccharides hydrolysis. Three unknown peaks were detected that we considered to be sugar derivative compounds. Thus, the polysaccharides contents, for both treatments, might actually be superior. Concerning to the product purity, the ethanol extraction revealed to be the less efficient. The lignin content in the solid fraction, ranged between 28% and 31%, with 1,4‐dioxane extraction, and between 40% and 50%, with ethanol. The lignin molecular weight was determined with GPC, after and before liquor pH lowering. Thereby, for pH 6, pH 4 and pH 3 the obtained MWs were: 2376 Da, 1477 Da and 3705 Da, respectively. The molecular weight increase may be due to the lignin repolymerization. These results suggest that the polysaccharides recovery and lignin molecular weight may be related. As the molecular weight increases or decreases, the polysaccharides percentage presents the same behavior, regardless of the product purity. The data obtained after FT‐IR analysis suggested that there was no significant modifications on lignin structure. Comportamento dos dez maiores bancos brasileiros durante a crise do subprime : uma análise por meio de indicadores contábeis

O presente artigo tem por objetivo demonstrar o comportamento dos dez maiores bancos brasileiros no período de junho de 2008 a de setembro de 2009, a partir da análise de indicadores contábeis. Para tanto, foram calculados 16 índices com periodicidade trimestral, extraídos a partir das informações contidas nos relatórios contábeis, caracterizando a pesquisa como documental. Os índices foram separados em cinco categorias: liquidez, capital, rentabilidade, receita e mercado. Os resultados obtidos apontaram que a maioria das instituições financeiras da amostra teve capacidade de gerir seus recursos de forma a obter condições de manter o crédito inicialmente, para então, a partir do primeiro trimestre de 2009, impulsionada pelos bancos públicos, elevar suas operações de crédito. Além disso, a maioria dos bancos apresentou uma tendência anticíclica de fomentar as atividades produtivas, com preferência às atividades de maior liquidez em detrimento da rentabilidade, tendo dessa forma uma postura mais conservadora. Por fim, verificou-se que as iniciativas adotadas pelo governo, o equilíbrio econômico brasileiro e os recursos oferecidos pelos bancos ajudaram a produzir um ambiente para o reaquecimento das atividades empresariais durante o período mais agudo da crise do subprime

Interdisciplinaridade e transdisciplinaridade: dos conhecimentos e suas histórias

O presente texto tem por objetivo discutir teoricamente acerca da interdisciplinaridade e da transdisciplinaridade como alternativas para a efetivação de uma prática social no contexto educacional contemporâneo. O ensaio tem como foco o debate em torno da interdisciplinaridade e da transdisciplinaridade como potenciais de mudanças na atualidade, utilizando-se do recurso à história, para compreensão das concepções pedagógicas que permeiam a formação e a atuação num contexto marcado por intensas transformações. A apresentação do quadro conceitual é ancorada em autores de referência e, em especial, no filósofo e epistemólogo Hilton Japiassu para abordar as razões pelas quais a complexidade e a feição plural da escola caracterizam o seu dinamismo, expressando um certo hibridismo que é fundamental para romper com as formas hierárquicas de organização curricular, articulando os conhecimentos práticos aos conhecimentos acadêmicos, por meio de ações concretas numa situação real de ensino e numa perspectiva transdisciplinar

Competências atribuídas ao profissional Controller atuante no setor público do estado de Pernambuco

Este artigo tem como objetivo verificar quais as competências atribuídas ao Controller no setor público. Para alcançar o objetivo proposto foi aplicado um questionário (disponibilizado via e-mail ou whatsapp) com os profissionais atuantes nos principais órgãos públicos de controladoria do estado. O questionário foi dividido nos seguintes grupos de variáveis: perfil do Controller, competências operacionais, gerenciais e estratégicas, sendo obtidas, nessa aplicação, 52 respostas válidas. Após a análise descritiva dos dados referentes à distribuição de frequência do grupo de respondentes, foi realizado, através do teste estatístico não paramétrico Kruskal-Wallis, a verificação de relações significativas entre o perfil dos entrevistados e as competências presentes nos níveis operacionais, gerenciais e estratégicos, com margem máxima de erro de 0,05. Verificou-se, na análise de resultado, que algumas competências operacionais, gerenciais e estratégicas foram significativas a algumas variáveis de perfil do respondente, conforme detalhado na análise de resultado desse estudo e que, no tocante ao grau de concordância, os entrevistados atribuíram as competências estratégicas como as mais condizentes com o papel do Controller dentro da organização seguidas das competências gerenciais e operacionais, nesta ordem. Vale ressaltar que, sugere-se, para futuras pesquisas, a utilização de mais testes estatísticos, como a aplicação de regressões para verificar o sentido das diferenças significativas encontradas nesse estudo, além da inclusão, por exemplo, do porte do órgão estudado como fator que afete as exigências de perfil do Controller

COMPORTAMIENTO DE LOS DIEZ MAYORES BANCOS BRASILEÑOS DURANTE LA CRISIS DEL SUBPRIME: UN ANÁLISIS POR MEDIO DE INDICADORES CONTABLES

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo demostrar el comportamiento de los diez mayores bancos brasileños en el período de junio de 2008 a septiembre de 2009, a partir del análisis de indicadores contables. Para tanto, han sido calculados 16 índices con periodicidad trimestral, extraídos a partir de las informaciones contenidas en los informes contables, caracterizando la investigación como documental. Los índices han sido separados en cinco categorías: liquidez, capital, rentabilidad, ingreso y mercado. Los resultados obtenidos han señalado que la mayoría de las instituciones financeiras de la muestra ha tenido la capacidad de gestionar sus recursos de manera a obtener condiciones de mantener el crédito inicialmente, para entonces, a partir del primer trimestre de 2009, impulsadas por los bancos públicos, aumentar sus operaciones de crédito. Además, la mayoría de los bancos ha presentado una tendencia anticíclica de fomentar las actividades productivas, con preferencia a las actividades de mayor liquidez en detrimento de la rentabilidad, teniendo, de esa manera, una postura más conservadora. Finalmente, se ha verificado que debido a las iniciativas adoptadas por el gobierno, el equilibrio económico brasileño y los recursos ofrecidos por los bancos han ayudado a producir un ambiente para el recalentamiento de las actividades empresariales durante el periodo más agudo de la crisis del subprim

Mass balance of pilot-scale pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse by steam explosion followed by alkaline delignification

Five pilot-scale steam explosion pretreatments of sugarcane bagasse followed by alkaline delignification were explored. The solubilised lignin was precipitated with 98% sulphuric acid. Most of the pentosan (82.6%), and the acetyl group fractions were solubilised during pretreatment, while 90.2% of cellulose and 87.0% lignin were recovered in the solid fraction. Approximately 91% of the lignin and 72.5% of the pentosans contained in the steam-exploded solids were solubilised by delignification, resulting in a pulp with almost 90% of cellulose. The acidification of the black liquors allowed recovery of 48.3% of the lignin contained in the raw material. Around 14% of lignin, 22% of cellulose and 26% of pentosans were lost during the process. In order to increase material recovery, major changes, such as introduction of efficient condensers and the reduction in the number of washing steps, should be done in the process setup. Gene expression has been extensively studied in plant science research, mainly for the assessment of plant stress responses. Real-time-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is an important tool for obtaining this information because it is a quick and easy technique to acquire a large amount of molecular data for both model and non-model plants. For a successful RT-qPCR analysis, gene expression should be carefully normalised. Genes involved in essential biological processes that exhibit constitutive expression are commonly selected as internal standards to normalise RT-qPCR experiments. In this study, the transcription profiles of 13 candidate reference genes for RT-qPCR were evaluated in three guarana cultivars (BRS-Amazonas, BRS-Maués and BRS-Luzéia) using different tissues (vegetative and fruit) in varying developmental stages. Two different algorithms, NormFinder and GeNorm, were utilised to assess gene stability. In general, the two algorithms did not select the same pairs of genes for all analysed conditions. For the largest group (the fruits of all cultivars), NormFinder selected the pair EF1A/UBQ, whereas GeNorm chose ACT/GAPDH as the best normalising genes. Thus, we recommend the use of at least four reference genes for the normalisation of gene expression in guarana plant studies. © 2015, Botanical Society of Sao Paulo

Loss and Gain in Mangrove Surrounding the Lençóis Maranhense National Park: An Integrated Approach Using Remote Sensing and SIG Data

Brazil harbors the second largest expanse of mangroves in the world, trailing only behind Indonesia. In a regional context, the state of Maranhão stands out, encompassing approximately 36% of Brazil’s total mangrove area, including a portion located on the eastern coast in the Lençóis Maranhenses. This study played a crucial role in identifying the areas of gain, loss, and stability in the mangroves surrounding the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park over a historical period spanning from 1985 to 2019. The study provided detailed maps depicting spatial changes, such as migration and attenuation that occurred in the mangroves due to the influence of aeolian dunes and wind patterns in the region. This long-term analysis, the first of its kind to examine the annual expansion of forest loss in the remaining mangroves around the Lençóis Maranhenses in recent decades, revealed a reduction in the central mangrove areas between 1985 and 2019. This decline can be attributed not only to intense tourist activity and climate change but also to the movement and invasion of sand dunes in certain areas, as observed near the villages of Caburé and Paulino Neves (Pequenos Lençóis) in December2022. Wind plays a fundamental role as a transformative agent in the local landscape. Through the analysis of wind roses using ERA5 reanalysis data and meteorological stations from the Aeronautics (São Luís and Parnaíba), it was possible to identify and characterize the prevalence of northeast trade winds in the Lençóis Maranhenses region during the years 1985 to 2019, with average speeds ranging from 6 to 8 m/s. The advancement of dunes onto the mangroves surrounding the Lençóis Maranhenses results in burial, reduction, and even migration of mangrove patches. Additionally, over the years, population growth and increasing tourism pressure along the banks of the Preguiças River have drawn attention to the need to implement control and conservation measures in the mangroves to prevent further disturbances in this environment

Protocolo de avaliação funcional de joelho em patologias ortopédicas

Existe uma grande dificuldade em se estabelecer critérios de progressão funcional nos exercícios de propriocepção e atividades esportivas durante o processo de reabilitação das patologias do joelho, sendo estes critérios ainda mais cruciais nos protocolos de reabilitação acelerada em atletas de alto nível. Para permitir que o atleta inicie o trote, corrida, saltos e retorne aos treinos necessitamos da quantificação de alguns parâmetros de função, como força, potência, resistência e agilidade. Desta forma evitamos os erros que decorrem de uma avaliação exclusivamente subjetiva e baseada em sintomas, ou de medidas totalmente vinculadas à função, como a utilização da medida do perímetro da coxa para inferir a função muscular
