Context: Shoulder injuries are frequently sustained in American football due to the contact and collision aspect of the sport. Injuries to the shoulder account for about 10% to 20% of all musculoskeletal injuries that occur in football and the shoulder is the fourth most commonly injured joint behind the hand, knee and ankle. The effectiveness of the dynamic stabilizers of the glenohumeral joint is a factor that could affect the rate of injuries that occur at the joint. The CKCUEST has been shown to be an effective test for assessing the dynamic stability of the glenohumeral joint. Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine if identifying and treating players can decrease the incidence of shoulder injuries in collegiate football players with poor dynamic stability at the glenohumeral joint. Design: Retrospective chart review. Participants: 90 NCAA football players. The average age of subjects was 20.88 years (+/-1.52), the average height was 185.14 cm (+/-6.17), and the average weight was 99.92 kg (+/-18.42). Intervention: The closed kinetic chain upper extremity stability test (CKCUEST) was used to identify subjects at risk for glenohumeral joint instability injuries. A shoulderstrengthening program was implemented into the summer workout program before the 2015 college football season. The CKCUEST was administered immediately before the 2015 season in August, 2015 and it was administered again after the end of the 2015 season. The incidence rate for glenohumeral instability injuries was calculated for th

An ecological life history study of the freshwater prawn Palaemonetes kadiakensis was conducted at the mitigated wetland of the Green Bottom Wildlife management Area (GBWMA). Monthly samples were collected from November 1996 through November 1997. In addition, weekly samples were collected from May through November for growth and reproductive analysis. Monthly samples yielded 520 prawns. Palaemonetes kadiakensis had a one-year life cycle, with all adults dying by September. Males averaged 23.82 mm (range = 14.15 to 36.75 mm) and females averaged 26.78mm (range = 15.06 to 38.60 mm) in length. Males averaged 0.087g (range = 0.014to 0.293 g) and females averaged 0.140 g (range = 0.014 to 0.417 g) in weight. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.915) between average body length and weight. For the monthly collections, largest percent growth occurred between August and September (32.59 %), with 21.7°C as the average temperature. For weekly collections, the largest percent growth occurred between 31 July and 7 August (39.83 %), with 26.5 as the average temperature. There was no significant difference in sex ratio (p = 0.448). Ovigerous females were present from 30 April to 12 August, carrying an average of 69 eggs. There was a low correlation (r=0.423) between fecundity and length of female. Plant detritus was the main food item for all four seasons, ranging from 82.2 to 97.9 percent, winter and spring, respectively. The median tolerance limit (TLm) for low pH was determined to be 5.03 by linear regression, and 4.60 by straight line graphical interpolation method. A laboratory test at theoretical pH value of 5.03 produced a 95 percent survival rate

Cryptococcal choroiditis in advanced AIDS with clinicopathologic correlation.

PurposeTo describe a case of disseminated cryptococcal meningitis with multifocal choroiditis and provide optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings correlated with described histopathology in a patient with advanced acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).ObservationsThe patient was a 54-year-old man with AIDS who presented with dyspnea and headache followed by acute vision loss. OCT demonstrated a lesion with a small area of fluid that was limited by a more prominent and irregular external limiting membrane with underlying nodular choroidal thickening, mild RPE disorganization, and hyperreflectivity of the overlying photoreceptor layer. Patient was found to have disseminated cryptococcal infection and passed away despite aggressive therapy. Autopsy was performed including bilateral enucleation and a Cryptococcus lesion was confirmed on histopathology. Conclusion and importanceThis case highlights the clinical, imaging, and histopathologic findings of cryptococcal choroiditis and provides a review of the updated treatment recommendations for disseminated infection in a patient with advanced AIDS. Although currently fundoscopy has proven most useful in directing the diagnostic algorithm in choroiditis in the setting of advanced immunosuppression, OCT may provide insight into the spread of Cryptococcus within the eye

Population growth, movements, and status of the Nushagak Peninsula Caribou Herd following reintroduction, 1988 - 2000

Barren ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) were reintroduced to the Nushagak Peninsula, Alaska in February of 1988 after an absence of more than 100 years. Since reintroduction, herd growth and population dynamics have been monitored closely. At this time, there has been no significant dispersal from the herds' core range. The Nushagak Peninsula Caribou Herd (NPCH) grew rapidly from 146 reintroduced individuals to over 1000 in 13 years. Dramatic mean annual growth during the first 6 years (1988-1994) of 38% (r = 0.32) can be attributed to the high percentage of females in the initial reintroduction, high calf production and survival, exceptional range conditions, few predators, and no hunting. However, the populations' exceptional growth (peak counts of 1400) slowed and stabilized between 1996¬1998 and then decreased between 1998 and 2000. Size, body condition and weights of calves captured in 2000 were significantly lower than those captured in 1995 and 1997. Although calf production also decreased from close to 100% (1990-1995) to about 91% (1996-2000), overall calf survival continued to be high. Legal harvest began in 1995, and harvest reports have accounted for approximately 3% of population mortality annually. Although brown bears (Ursus arctos) and wolves (Canis lupus) are present, the extent of predation is unknown. Mean home range of the NPCH was 674 km2 and group sizes were greatest during post-calving aggregation in July (mean = 127). Caribou population density on the Nushagak Peninsula reached approximately 1.2 caribou/km2 in 1997 before declining to about 1.0 caribou/km2. A range survey in 1994 noted only trace utilization of lichens on the Nushagak Peninsula by caribou. A subsequent survey in 1999 found moderate to severe utilization in 46% of plots, suggesting the reintroduced herd was beginning to alter range condition. Between 1997 and 2000, both calf production and condition of 10-month-old calves declined. Calving has also been delayed in recent years. However, we suspect the reduced herd growth can be attributed to increasing hunting pressure and some dispersal of caribou from the Peninsula, not reduced range condition
