    Get PDF
The first mission statement of Nigerian National policy for InformationTechnology (IT) is to use IT for education and a major underlining factor in achieving the goals of the National IT policy is the readiness of teachers to use IT. It is against this background that this study was set to investigate the readiness of teachers in Nigeria to integrate IT in instruction. Three research questions were generated and answered in the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey design using two questionnaires (Teachers Information Technology Preparedness Questionnaire and Basic Information Technology Practical Skills Activities) to collect data from a total of 470 teachers who were selected through the simple random sampling technique. Data analysis for the research questions was done through the use of simple percentage and frequency calculation. The results revealed that majority of the teachers have low level of knowledge about IT. In the same vein, majority of teachers in the schools in this study did not have adequate IT skills. However, the teachers have positive attitude toward the use of information technology

Social Studies Education: An Imperative for the Promotion of Cultural Values for National Integration in Nigeria.

Nigeria is a nation of many ethnic groups with diverse cultures. Such cultures could be seen in the aspects of religion, languages, dressing, types of food consumed, marriages, housing, occupation and so on. The cultural values of the country have become a matter of concern since the development of any society is rooted in what the members of such a society cherished or frown at. For instance, the cultural values   which are cherished in the country are basically focused on enhancing human dignity. Such values include discipline, integrity, dignity of labour, social justice, religious tolerance, self-reliance and patriotism. These cultural values are clearly spelt out in the National Philosophy as a measure to ensure rapid integration of the nation. It is believed that any group of people that could not promote their values will surely have a problem of development. In Nigeria, Social Studies Education was conceived as a subject to help heal the wounds of the civil war, ethnicity, ethnocentrism, social and political problems, and to promote culture and national integration, co-operation, good citizenship, among others using the instrument of school(Ezegbe,1988). This paper therefore examines the concept of culture and cultural values, national integration, concept of Social Studies Education. It also highlighted the place of Social Studies Education in the promotion of cultural values and national integration. The paper concluded by stating that, Nigerian’s respect for each other’s cultural characteristics will foster national integration in the country. Recommendations were made with a view to making Nigerian cultural values to be properly imparted to the learners through Social Studies Education

Carbon trading amidst global uncertainty: The role of policy and geopolitical uncertainty

    Get PDF
Economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and geopolitical uncertainty (GPU) can fuel speculation, flood the carbon trading market with excess allowances, and undermine the scheme's efficacy in tackling climate change. While the existing literature documents the adverse effects of uncertainty on macroeconomic and financial variables, the impact on the carbon trading risk remains unclear. This paper analyses the effects of EPU and GPU on the volatility and other risk levels in the carbon market using daily European Union Emissions Trading Scheme data (February 2, 2009 to 8/31/2022) and monthly data on the uncertainty indicators (2009M2–2022M8). The findings reveal that unstable policies and geopolitical tensions heighten carbon market risk since global uncertainty increases information asymmetry and risk premium and causes a delay in investment decisions. Future deliberation among the Cooperation of Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change should incorporate measures to mitigate global uncertainty while pushing for decarbonization and transition to clean technology

Significance of phosphorus inclusions and discrete micron-sized grains of apatite in postglacial forest soils

Recent advances in soil phosphorus (P) studies have revealed unique P hot spots and discrete micron-sized grains at soil microsites, but the significance of these so-called 'hot spots' and grains in P cycling and long-term supply is yet to be determined. We examined soil particles and pore space distribution at a micro-scale in two postglacial forest soils by laser ablation ICP-MS imaging. This allowed us to semi-quantitatively reveal both axial and lateral abundance, distribution, and co-localization of P with elements known to influence its chemical speciation (e.g., Si, Al, Mn, Ca, and Fe). The results show topsoil P to be co-localised predominantly with Si, Al, and Fe. However, in the subsoils, P was co-localised mainly with Ca, Si, Al, and Mg in spots within Si and Al-bearing minerals and with only Ca in discrete micron-sized grains. While the spots of P-Ca inclusions were similar to 1000 mu m apart and present at 40-100 cm depth in Tarnsjo, the discrete grains of P-Ca were similar to 700-1200 mu m apart and present at 90-100 cm depth in Tonnersjoheden. The P concentrations in these 'hot spots' and grains were 7 to 600 times greater than the average soil P concentrations, with the highest values (3434-8716 mmol P kg(-1)) occurring in the C horizons of the two soils. When combined with previous P speciation results obtained by synchrotron P K-edge XANES in the same soils, our work confirms geogenic apatite to have been dissolved in the topsoil and its P transformed to P adsorbed by Al-Si and Fe phases, and to organic P. Most importantly, our work shows subsoil spots of P-Ca inclusions and micron-sized grains to be a long-term source of P and Ca. Highlights The significance of high-P spots and discrete grains to long-term P supply is largely unknown. For the first time, P concentration and speciation was resolved by LA-ICP-MS multi-elemental analysis. The P spots exist as dispersed apatite inclusions and micron-sized grains in the subsoil. P in these spots and grains were up to 600 times greater than the bulk soil P concentrations

Foreword: The Legal Profession and Social Change

Fordham University School of Law’s Stein Center for Law and Ethics has collaborated with the Fordham Law Review every year since the late 1990s to encourage, collect, and publish scholarly writings on different aspects of the legal profession, including its norms, regulation, organization, history, and development—that is, on themes relating to what law schools loosely call “legal ethics.” The legal profession is an important subject of study for legal scholars, among others. Although one U.S. Supreme Court Justice, himself a former law professor, airily derided legal ethics as the “least analytically rigorous . . . of law-school subjects,” we dispute this characterization and share pride in the scholarship collected over more than a quarter of a century. Recent societal developments, including mass protests, responses to racial injustices, the growth of social movements, greater awareness about climate change, and rapid development in technology, have all had profound impact on society, including the establishment and modification of laws and regulations, the establishment of new programs and policies in the private and public sectors, changes in the use of social media, and changes in institutions and professions. This year, the Fordham Law Review’s collection of Essays on the legal profession addresses a broad theme that encompasses these changes: The Legal Profession and Social Change. One might not reflexively associate the legal profession with social change given its historic conservativism, but the profession is not a monolith. Today, there are over a million lawyers. Different slices of the profession have different relationships to social change. Some lawyers resist it, but others adapt to it or assist clients in adapting to it or promoting it. Some seek to be at the vanguard of changing society for the better. Particularly given the many ongoing changes we are experiencing and the other changes that some hope to see, one can take the theme of this collection in various directions, as its contributors do

    Get PDF
This study examines the impact of quoted companies attributes on the reliability of financial reporting in Nigeria. The objective of the study is to investigate whether there is any significant relationship between companies attributes such as size, profitability, age and size of audit firm and the reliability of financial reporting. The data were collected through a secondary source from fifty-one randomly selected quoted companies in Nigeria for the year 2010. The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Our findings show that there is a significant relationship between company size, profitability, age and reliability of financial reporting and a negative relationship between size of audit firm and reliability of financial reporting in Nigeria. Also, the study reveals that profitability is the major companies’ attribute that influences the overall quality of financial reports reliability in Nigeria. The study recommends that there should be provisions in the law dealing with companies’ attributes which have the potential to impair the quality of financial reporting. Similarly, emphasis should be placed on the qualities possessed by the preparers and those who attest to financial statements to show desired outcome. Keywords: Reliability, Companies Attributes, Financial Reporting.

lnvestment in Education and lnclusive Growth: Any Relationship for Nigeria?

    Get PDF
Until recently,.Jhe last decade has witnessed massive economic growth in Nigeria, but the literature has proved that the growth has not been inclusive in nature. This is because, in spite of the level of growth recorded overtime, the poverty rate is still very high. This study investigates the relationship between human capital (education) and inclusive growth in Nigeria between the sample period of 1981 to 2013. The Johansen co-integration me_thod and Error Correction Mechanism (ECM) were adopted. The result reveals that human capital has a positive and significant long run relationship with inclusive growth in Nigeria. While, it showed a negative and significant relationship for public capital expenditure on education and a negative, it was not having significant relationship with public recurrent expenditure and education. The study however suggest that, f or the Nigerian economy to maximise the benefits from human capital and public expenditure on education, the government must initiate policies that will drive not only quantity and quality education, but that is all inclusive, so OJ to create more employment opportunities. An increase in employment will therefore increase income and standard ofliving, which will in tum reduce poverty and inequality

Pollutant Emissions, Energy Consumption and Economic Growth in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The study investigates the direction of causal relationships among emissions, energy consumption and economic growth in Nigeria using annual time series data for the period 1970-2013. The Johansen maximum likelihood cointegration tests indicate an existence of a unique cointegrating vector, and the normalized long run estimates shows that fossil fuel enhances carbon emissions whereas, clean energy source (electricity) mitigate the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Similarly, the Wald exogeneity Granger causality test indicates an existence of unidirectional causation running from fossil fuel to CO2 emissions and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Alternatively, non-fossil energy (electric power) causes more proportionate change in GDP per capita but our result could not establish any causal link between electric power and carbon emissions. Finally, charting a channel towards ensuring sustainable environment and economic development involves a progressive substitutability of clean energy sources for fossil consumption
