    p-channel thin-film transistors based on spray-coated Cu2O films

    Thin films of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) were grown using solution-based spray pyrolysis in ambient air and incorporated into hole-transporting thin-film transistors. The phase of the oxide was confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements while the optical band gap of the films was determined to be ∼2.57 eV from optical transmission measurements. Electrical characterization of Cu2O films was performed using bottom-gate, bottom-contact transistors based on SiO2 gate dielectric and gold source-drain electrodes. As-prepared devices show clear p-channel operation with field-effect hole mobilities in the range of 10−4–10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 with some devices exhibiting values close to 1 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1

    Loss of Wdfy3 in mice alters cerebral cortical neurogenesis reflecting aspects of the autism pathology.

    Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are complex and heterogeneous developmental disabilities affecting an ever-increasing number of children worldwide. The diverse manifestations and complex, largely genetic aetiology of ASDs pose a major challenge to the identification of unifying neuropathological features. Here we describe the neurodevelopmental defects in mice that carry deleterious alleles of the Wdfy3 gene, recently recognized as causative in ASDs. Loss of Wdfy3 leads to a regionally enlarged cerebral cortex resembling early brain overgrowth described in many children on the autism spectrum. In addition, affected mouse mutants display migration defects of cortical projection neurons, a recognized cause of epilepsy, which is significantly comorbid with autism. Our analysis of affected mouse mutants defines an important role for Wdfy3 in regulating neural progenitor divisions and neural migration in the developing brain. Furthermore, Wdfy3 is essential for cerebral expansion and functional organization while its loss-of-function results in pathological changes characteristic of ASDs

    Solution processed SnO2:Sb transparent conductive oxide as an alternative to indium tin oxide for applications in organic light emitting diodes

    Here we present the deposition of antimony-doped tin oxide thin films using the ambient spray pyrolysis technique and demonstrate their implementation as transparent electrodes (anodes) in red, green and blue Organic Light emitting diodes. The films were spray coated at 380 oC from SnCl4 and SbCl3 solution blends in methanol and ∼230 nm thick films were investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, AFM, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, 4-point probe, Hall Effect and Kelvin Probe. It was found that for optimum antimony doping in the precursor solution of ∼2 wt%, the as-deposited ATO films exhibit excellent characteristics such as low surface roughness of RRMS∼6.3 nm, high work function (∼ -5.03 eV), wide direct band gap (∼4.2 eV), high transparency in the visible spectrum in excess of 85 % on glass, low sheet resistivity (∼32 Ohms/sq), high charge carrier concentration (∼6.35 × 10^20 cm-3) and carrier mobility of ∼32 cm2 V-1 s-1. Furthermore, the electrical and optical performance i.e. the turn on voltage and external quantum efficiency of red, green and blue OLEDs fabricated on optimized SnO2:Sb films were identical to those of OLEDs fabricated on commercially available ITO (Rs∼15 Ohms/sq) and were found to be in excess of 11 %, 0.3 % and 13 % for red, green and blue OLEDs respectivel

    Right Ventricular Failure Following Left Ventricular Assist Device Implant: An Intermacs Analysis

    Purpose: Right heart failure (RHF) management following LVAD include inotropes, right ventricular mechanical support and heart transplant. We analyzed the outcomes of severe RHF following implant of a fully magnetically levitated or hybrid magnetic centrifugal durable LVAD. Methods: In this INTERMACS analysis we identified patients who developed severe RHF following LVAD from 2013 until 2020 as bridge to recovery or transplant. Patients were categorized in three groups based on RHF treatment strategy: inotrope support (group 1), temporary mechanical support (group 2), and durable centrifugal RVAD (group 3). Kaplan Meier and Cox-regression survival analysis between groups was undertaken. Logistic regression analysis for new onset dialysis was conducted. Results: 2509 patients developed severe RHF after LVAD. 2199 (87.6%) patients were managed with inotropes (group 1), 233 (9.3%) with temporary RVAD (group 2) and 77 (3.1%) with durable RVAD (group 3). Group 1 had fewer patients with INTERMACS profile 1 and 2 (21.6%, p\u3c0.001). One year survival was 84.6%, 59.3%, and 63.8% in groups 1,2, and 3 (mortality HR=2.4 and 3.3 for groups 2 and 3 vs. group 1, p\u3c0.05). One year survival to transplant was 27%, 36.5%, and 53.6% in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively (p\u3c0.05). Group 2 had higher incidence of new onset dialysis (42.6%, p=0.049). Conclusion: Survival with RHF following LVAD implant varies based on treatment strategy; inotrope support is associated with increased survival. Patients with durable RVAD are more likely to survive to transplant. Patient selection studies for durable RVAD with contraindications for transplant are necessary

    Study protocol to investigate the effects of testosterone therapy as an adjunct to exercise rehabilitation in hypogonadal males with chronic heart failure

    BACKGROUND: Testosterone deficiency is a common occurrence in men with chronic heart failure (CHF) and may underpin features of advanced disease, including reduced skeletal muscle mass and fatigue. It is positively correlated with cardiac output and exercise capacity in patients with CHF, whereas a significant improvement in both these parameters has been observed following testosterone replacement therapy. Testosterone therapy has also been shown to reduce circulating levels of inflammatory markers, (TNF-α, sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1) in patients with established coronary artery disease and testosterone deficiency. This pilot study will assess the feasibility of a combined exercise rehabilitation and adjunctive testosterone therapy intervention for evoking improvements in exercise capacity, circulating inflammatory markers, cardiac and skeletal muscle function, indices of psychological health status and quality of life in hypogonadal males with chronic heart failure. METHODS/DESIGN: Following ethical approval, 36 patients will be randomly allocated to one of two groups: testosterone or placebo therapy during exercise rehabilitation. A combined programme of moderate intensity aerobic exercise and resistance (strength) training will be used. The primary outcome measure is exercise capacity, assessed using an incremental shuttle walk test. Secondary outcome measures include measures of peak oxygen uptake, cardiac function, lower-limb skeletal muscle contractile function and oxygenation during exercise, circulating inflammatory markers, psychological health status and quality of life. DISCUSSION: Exercise rehabilitation can safely increase exercise capacity in stable CHF patients but there is a need for studies which are aimed at evaluating the long-term effects of physical training on functional status, morbidity and mortality. This pilot study will provide valuable preliminary data on the efficacy of testosterone therapy as an adjunct to exercise rehabilitation on a range of functional, physiological and health-related outcomes in this patient population. Preliminary data will be used in the design of a large-scale randomised controlled trial, aimed at informing clinical practice with respect to optimisation of exercise rehabilitation in this patient group

    Prediction of knot size in uneven-sized Norway spruce stands in Sweden

    The size of knots is negatively correlated with bending strength in sawn timber and it is therefore used as a quality grading criterion in national roundwood grading standards. Some standards even use the size of the largest knot as the sole estimate for individual log knottiness. The size of knots is determined by crown horizontal extension, which in turn is dependent on the impact of competing trees. Thus, with knot size models that are competition-dependent, roundwood quality due to knottiness can be simulated for different management alternatives. However, these types of models, calibrated on uneven-sized Norway spruce in Fennoscandia, are currently not available. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a competition-dependent model framework for prediction of the largest knot size per stem height section, for application within uneven-sized Norway spruce stands. Data from terrestrial laser scanning of an uneven-sized stand in southern Sweden are used to calibrate a modular prediction framework, consisting of interlinked allometric statistical models. Alternative framework sub-models are presented and the preferred model combination can be selected according to context and available input data. The flexible modular format enables further development of separate sub-components for adaptation to growing conditions not covered by the current calibration range

    CHESTNUT: Improve serendipity in movie recommendation by an Information Theory-based collaborative filtering approach

    The term serendipity has been understood narrowly in the Recommender System. Applying a user-centered approach, user-friendly serendipitous recommender systems are expected to be developed based on a good understanding of serendipity. In this paper, we introduce CHESTNUT , a memory-based movie collaborative filtering system to improve serendipity performance. Relying on a proposed Information Theory-based algorithm and previous study, we demonstrate a method of successfully injecting insight, unexpectedness and usefulness, which are key metrics for a more comprehensive understanding of serendipity, into a practical serendipitous runtime system. With lightweight experiments, we have revealed a few runtime issues and further optimized the same. We have evaluated CHESTNUT in both practicability and effectiveness , and the results show that it is fast, scalable and improves serendip-ity performance significantly, compared with mainstream memory-based collaborative filtering.     Exploring the factors affecting MOOC retention: a survey study

    Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) hold the potential to open up educational opportunities to a global audience. However, evidence suggests that only a small proportion of MOOC participants go on to complete their courses and relatively little is understood about the MOOC design and implementation factors that influence retention. This paper reports a survey study of 379 participants enrolled at university in Cairo who were encouraged to take a MOOC of their own choice as part of their development. 122 participants (32.2%) went onto to complete an entire course. There were no significant differences in completion rates by gender, level of study (undergraduate or postgraduate) or MOOC platform. A post-MOOC survey of students’ perceptions found that MOOC Course Content was a significant predictor of MOOC retention, with the relationship mediated by the effect of content on the Perceived Effectiveness of the course. Interaction with the instructor of the MOOC was also found to be significant predictor of MOOC retention. Overall these constructs explained 79% of the variance in MOOC retention

SBSE has been applied to problems throughout the SE lifecycle, from requirements and project planning to maintenance and reengineering. The approach is attractive because it offers a suite of adaptive automated and semiautomated solutions in situations typified by large complex problem spaces with multiple competing and conflicting objectives. This article provides a review and classification of literature on SBSE. The work identifies research trends and relationships between the techniques applied and the applications to which they have been applied and highlights gaps in the literature and avenues for further research.EPSRC and E
