Skill heterogeneity and market labour income inequality

    Get PDF
Occupational choice models predict that, ceteris paribus, countries with higher dispersion of skill will have higher market labour income inequality. However, an extended conclusion from empirical research is that cross-country variations in dispersion of skill explain little of the variation in income inequality. This paper identifies factors related to production and organization technologies that moderate the relationship between dispersion of skill and dispersion of income in occupational choice equilibrium outcomes and that, if not properly accounted for, can bias the results of the empirical studies that explain dispersion of income as a function of dispersion of skill. In particular, comparing equilibrium outcomes from occupational choices in economies that differ in the distribution of skill and in the efficiency of supervision hierarchies, the paper can explain why the US and Sweden have similar labour productivity, but income inequality is higher in the US than in Sweden, and why productivity is lower and income inequality is higher in Spain than in Sweden

Without the payment of taxes, it would not be possible to maintain the welfare achieved in recent years, but no one likes to pay taxes. With this work we want to deepen the application of the marketing mix in the tax field, achieve a rapprochement with the taxpayer discovering which elements are preferred when applying tax marketing and thus achieve a better predisposition to the payment of taxesUniversidad de Sevilla.

Analysis of the rear leg rotation movement during the fencing lunge

    Get PDF
The most relevant aulhois of fencing agree on the extension of the rear leg's knee from the on guard position, which is the ona thai provides ihe real speed to the lunge, and the extension of the arm only serves to drive the points towards the target. All the authors coincide thai it is important to keep the whole sole of the rear Foot supported on the Boor, keeping the same direction and without sliding it during the movernent, being the only one support that assures a really fast and balanced lunge, allowing the return to the on guard position or to continue towards ahead. Nevertheless, in a competition it may be observed that there are just a few fencers that keep the position of the feet in 90° angle during the lunge, as proposed in the fencing books. From this situation, we try to know if the rotation movement of the rear leg improve the speed of the Mass Centre and the weapon

<br /

Causes of mortality among adults with Down syndrome before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain

Background: The life expectancy of people with Down syndrome (DS) is limited by Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related deaths, mainly due to respiratory infections. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic could have changed known, past trends in mortality in this population. We analysed the differences in causes of mortality between individuals with DS deceased before and after the onset of the pandemic. Method: This is a cross-sectional study of adults with DS recruited at a tertiary, university outpatient clinic in Madrid, Spain. Demographic and clinical data were retrospectively collected from their medical records, including information on their deaths, if any. Results: Five hundred seventy-two adults were included in the study, and 67 (11.7%) died. The main cause of death was respiratory infections, which occurred in 36 participants [9 (45.0%) before, and 27 (58.7%) after the appearance of COVID-19]. No significant differences were found in the determinants of pre-pandemic and post-pandemic death after adjusting for age and AD, except for an association between the use of psychotropic medication and death in the post-pandemic period (odds ratio: 2.24; 95% confidence interval: 1.04–4.82). Vaccination against COVID-19 showed a marked protective effect against mortality (odds ratio: 0.0002; 95% confidence interval: 6.7e10−6 to 0.004). Conclusions: The appearance of COVID-19 has not impacted the overall trend of increase in mean age of death of adults with DS in our milieu, probably thanks to the very important protective effect of vaccination, which supports prioritising people with DS in future immunisation campaigns. The association between psychotropic medication use and mortality requires further explorationThis work was supported by a grant to Beatriz Sánchez (grant no. 2021b-2088) and Diego Real de Asúa (grant no. 2021a-2069) from the Fondation Jérôme Lejeun

Modelling Operative and Routine Learning Curves in Manoeuvres in Locks and in Transit in the Expanded Panama Canal

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract] Piloting in the Panama Canal is exceptional as, due to its importance, the functions of the captains of vessels are taken over by pilots. Hence, prior to inauguration of the expanded canal, a limited number of pilots experienced on the existing canal were certified for the transit of Neopanamax vessels by means of planned and innovative individual learning. After this organisational training through operative training, with the implementation of the expanded canal in June 2016, the routine training started. Hence the learning curve in the performance of these manoeuvres will represent the growing skill acquired by both the pilots and the organisation. Given that the learning effect is measurable, this paper has the dual objective of determining two curve models: the organisation operative learning curve model and the routine learning curve model for pilots performing transit manoeuvres in the expanded Panama Canal waterways and the Cocolí and Agua Clara locks. Manoeuvre times in locks and transit in the whole of the canal were followed up continuously in the first 42 months of operation. The research of Salvador Naya and Javier Tarrío has been supported by MINECO grant MTM2017-82724-R, and by the Xunta de Galicia (Grupos de Referencia Competitiva ED431C-2020-14 and Centro de Investigación del Sistema universitario de Galicia ED431G 2019/01), all of them through the ERDF.
