The Importance of Health and Social Protection Assets in the Economic Welfare of Households in Mexico
This paper seeks determines how the possession of health and social protection assets affects the probability of a household belonging to a given quintile of a proposed asset ownership index. An ordered logistic regression model was constructed. As a dependent variable, the quintile of each household was used according to the index. This research is based on 48 explanatory variables from the 2020 National Income and Expenses Survey. It confirms that health and social protection assets are relevant in the location of households in a quintile according to its socioeconomic condition. Estimated marginal effects and predictions for every quintile, show that the effect of the assets varies according to the quintile. Ownership of specific assets increase the likelihood of belonging to the higher quintiles. The possession of a voluntary pension fund is the most relevant asset. The empirical results obtained may contribute to design more efficient inequality-reducing public policies by promoting its acquisition and thereby encouraging social mobility.

Self-Identity: How URiM Students Navigate Between their Academic Career, Culture, and Family
Previous research on medical school experiences for students focuses on how to holistically admit underrepresented students in medicine (URiM) into medical school, but does not clearly understand their experiences once in medical school. The long-term influence of family for URiM students was explored to determine whether the influence of family had an impact on the students' academic success throughout adolescence into their current academic standing within a premedical program. These findings suggest that culture and family within medical education and how they connected to the self-identity is critical to explore. Studies like this one provide insight into how to improve educational outcomes for URiM students. A cohort of 10 URiM students in the Pre-medical Admissions Pathway Program (PMAP) at the University of Arizona participated in semi-structured interviews in fall of 2014 and was followed up the subsequent spring semester. A qualitative research approach was chosen to collect rich descriptive data on the student's experiences that could not be assessed through other forms of research (Dicicco-Bloom & Crabtree, 2006). Each interview lasted one hour and consisted of questions about the students' personal experiences in their education and how these connect to culture and family. The symbolic interaction and attachment theories were used to analyze the experiences shared by the participants. From this framework, coding themes and key terms were identified to better understanding the data gathered. In the preliminary interviews, family was identified as an important factor in being successful academically (even when students identified themselves as their motivation for education) because of the different types of support families offered this cohort of students. This study identifies how URiM students navigate within their academic, cultural, and familial identities and how these tie into their success within medical school

Preparing Migrant Families for Academic Success
Coming from a Migrant background and being first generation college students we understand the importance of engaging families and communities towards higher education. We wanted to raise awareness to migrant families that higher education can be accomplished. By us partnering up with Migrant Program board members we will be working together to empower Migrant families and encouraging their students to seek higher education. We hope that the migrant students can relate to us and envision themselves in higher education. We will be working with a community-based team in designing a curriculum. Our goal is to engage migrant families and the community in creating pathways for their children’s higher education career. Migrant families need to understand the importance of working together in order for their children to achieve academic success in higher education. The curriculum will be implemented in a ten-week program for Migrant families to attend in September 2015. The Migrant program will invite the migrant families to attend the summer program to educate them about higher education and other topics. Our main goal with our curriculum is to create a college going culture among Migrant families. We will plan different community and trust building exercises that will allow for the families to work together while learning about higher education

Longitudinal Linkages among Parents’ Educational Expectations, Youth’s Educational Expectations, and Competence in Mexican-origin Families
The contribution that parental educational expectations for youth and youth's perceptions of academic competence can have on youth's own educational expectations across early to late adolescence is not well-understood. In a sample of Mexican-origin families, the current study examined longitudinal (from early to late adolescence) associations among mothers, fathers, and youth's educational expectations, how youth's educational expectations were associated with perceived academic competence, and the potential mediating role of youth's perceived academic competence. Data from two-parent families which included one focal child (7th grade: N= 469; youth: Mage = 12.31, 50% female) at three waves (7th, 9th, and 11th grade) were utilized. Structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis were implemented to assess the study's goals. Results revealed significant associations among parents' 7th grade educational expectations and youth's 9th and 11th grade educational expectations. The findings also revealed three significant associations among youth's perceived academic competence and educational expectations between 7th and 11th grade. Specifically, youth's 7th grade perceived academic competence predicted youth's 9th grade educational expectations, youth's 7th grade educational expectations predicted youth's 9th grade perceived academic competence, and youth's 9th grade perceived academic competence predicted youth's 11th grade educational expectations. Multigroup analysis did not reveal gender differences for the associations tested. The findings highlight the long-term significance of parents' educational expectations on youth's educational expectations and underscore youth's academic competence, an individual level factor, as critical to consider for understanding educational expectations across adolescence for Mexican-origin youth
