Implementation of Generic Skills in the Curriculum

    Get PDF
In many cultures and countries including Malaysia, the issue of incorporating generic skills into the curriculum taught to students in higher learning institutions has gained momentum in recent years. The raison d\u27être to inculcate generic skills among students is to enable the country to meet human resource requirements which will be more competitive in the advent of a borderless world. Growing concerns of the employability of graduates and the expansion in the size and diversity of student populations also form the basis to implement the generic skills program in universities. All undergraduate programs offered in public higher learning institutions in Malaysia are now required to incorporate generic skills in the curricula. This generic skill requirement is subject to reviews when programs are accredited and rated for quality assurance by the Ministry of Higher Education. In order to satisfy this requirement, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) as a new university has been proactive in redesigning the existing curriculum to be more competitive and marketable by integrating and implementing generic skills in the curriculum. This paper will discuss the approaches taken by UMT in integrating elements of generic skills in the teaching and learning activities. The experiences and challenges in the planning, implementing and assessing generic skills components are also elaborated. Finally, this paper ends with suggestions and recommendations with respect to further initiatives to enhance the employability of the graduates

Test FOR Dynamic Relationship between Financial Development and Economic Growth in Malaysia: A Vector Error Correction Modeling Approach

    Get PDF
This paper purports to study the effectiveness of financial development to Malaysian economic growth utilizing quarterly data. In view of the priority given to dynamic relationship in conducting this study, Vector Autoregressive (VAR) method which encompasses Johansen-Juselius’ Multivariate cointegration, Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), Impulse Response Function (IRF), and Variance Decomposition (VDC) are used as empirical evidence. The result reveals a short-term and long-term dynamic relationship between financial development and economic growth. The importance of financial sector in influencing the economic activity is proven as a clear policy implication

Development of pre-startup safety review implementation tool for safe operation in process plant

    Get PDF
A pre-startup safety review (PSSR) is a formal review of a chemical manufacturing process to verify that critical areas of the affected process have been assessed and addressed before using the process. It can be a new process or after modification to an existing process or operating conditions. There is concern about full implementation compliance, including designing the PSSR program, preparing the process to perform PSSR, following PSSR action items, and approving the PSSR report. This study aims to develop a PSSR Implementation Tool (PSSR-IT) via the Microsoft Excel platform. At the end of the self-assessment process, the end users were provided with the value of the percentage of compliance with PSSR requirements and a thorough review process prior to the start-up activities. A safety experts’ content validation index (CVI) was performed to ensure the tool's content was valid and sufficient for the PSSR process, followed by a case study. Feedback from process safety engineers and PSSR leaders as end users has been collected through the System Usability Scale (SUS). A total of 227 questions have been listed under 10 disciplines, including general info, operation, engineering, operational, process safety, health safety and environment (HSE), action log, final walk down, and approval that cover all essential aspects of review process prior to the start-up activities with CVI value of 0.98, k = 0.67. SUS findings demonstrated that all industrial experts and end users believe the tool is suitable and reliable, with a score >85%. Utilizing the PSSR tool will help the industries promote and improve the process safety program at the workplace

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder and pharmacotherapy plays a major role in its management. The 1950s and early 1960s saw milestones in the introduction of psychotropic drugs in clinical practice. A review of drug prescriptions in different settings provides an insight into the pattern of drug use, identifies drug-related problems and may be used to compare recommended guidelines with actual practice. This effort led to the evaluation of the drug prescribing pattern of antipsychotics in patients attending the psychiatric clinic at a government hospital. The data from 371 antipsychotic medication prescriptions that included 200 prescriptions for schizophrenia were collected during one month (1rst-31rst August 2008) at the outpatient pharmacy department. The mean age of patients was 35.0 years (SD = 1.131), with a male to female ratio of 2:1. The most widely used oral antipsychotic was haloperidol (16.3%) while the most common depot preparation prescribed was zuclopenthixol decanoate (8.8%). The daily dose of the average antipsychotic prescribed in this clinic was 342.06 mg equivalent of chlorpromazine. There was no relation between the doses received and ethnicity of the patient (Malay, Chinese or Indian). However, there was a significant relationship between the prescribed dose and patient age (P < 0.042). Nearly 32% of the schizophrenia patients were prescribed with atypical antipsychotics such as olanzapine (10.8%), risperidone (10.0%), quetiapine (7.6%) and clozapine (3.2%). Monotherapy was given to 73.0% of the schizophrenia patients. The majority of patients also received antidepressants. To conclude, this study gave evidence that physicians had a strong preference for monotherapy with conventional antipsychotic drugs while the use of atypical drugs was less prevalent

Possible participation of protein kinase C and cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway in antinociception of ethanol extract of Ficus deltoidea var angustifolia leaves in mice

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to evaluate the involvement of protein kinase C (PKC) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway in the antinociception of ethanol extract of F. deltoidea (EEFD) leaves. To evaluate the involvement of PKC, the mice were treated with EEFD or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, 100 mg/kg) 30 minutes before receiving phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA, 0.03μg/paw) intraplantarly at the right hind paw. The mice were observed to record the licking and biting the injected paw. To estimate the involvement of cGMP, the mice were divided into four groups (n = 7). Two groups were pre-treated with methylene blue (20 mg/kg) and after 20 minutes, they were given EEFD or vehicle. Another two groups were pre-treated with vehicle 20 minutes before EEFD or vehicle administration. After 30 minutes, induced with 0.6% acetic acid and the number of abdominal writhing was recorded. EEFD produced significant effect of inhibition of abdominal writhing in dose dependent manner. Similarly, administration of EEFD at the similar doses resulted in significantly reduced in nociception induced by intraplantar injection of PMA as it showed reduction in paw licking time. The pre-treatment with methylene blue significantly enhanced the anticoceptive activity of EEFD.The present results suggested that PKC and cGMP pathway possibly inactivated in the antinociceptive action exerted by EEFD
