In the traditional Malay community, the crow is a symbol of ugliness, weakness, unfulfilled dreams, and difficult changes. This study explored the reasons for the symbolic use of crows in Malay proverbs using the Inquisitive Semantics Theory (Jalaluddin, 2014), as well as the Cross Reference Framework (Kempson, 1986). The proverbial data in this research was obtained by applying the purposive sampling method on three dictionaries: Kamus Peribahasa Melayu Edisi Kelima (Rahman, 2017), Kamus Istimewa Peribahasa Melayu Edisi Kedua (Hussain, 2016) and Kamus Peribahasa Melayu (Said, 2013). Nine Malay proverbs that mentioned “crows” were found. Despite recent studies proving that crows are intelligent birds; particularly in solving problems and expressing complex feelings, the Malay community’s perception of the crow remains negative. In this regard, this study re-evaluated in depth the Malays’ current and past views on crows

    Get PDF
The study focus on convergence in 12 countries TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) and 16 countries RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) member countries, particularly in respect to total trade for the period 2000-2017. This study uses the non-linear approach model, transition Path, and log t-test by Philip and Sul. The Trans-Pacific Partnership’s overall convergence among member countries shows it is diverging, and clustered themselves into four convergence clubs. As for Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership’s overall convergence reflects it is converging though could be interpreted as a weak convergence, and clustered themselves into four convergence clubs. The study concludes that it is keen towards RCEP, as it shows more similarities and unity among participating member as to compare with TPP

Influence of thermal processing on chemical composition and antinutritional factors of durian (Durio zibethinus) SEED / Marina Zulkifli … [et al.]

    Get PDF
The effects of some heat treatments on the chemical composition of durian (Durio zibethinus) seeds were determined. Heat treatments applied were boiling, microwave cooking and autoclaving. The raw D.zibethinus seeds contained the highest chemical composition in terms of protein, fat, total ash, minerals, and crude fibre content. Nevertheless, boiling, microwave cooking and autoclaving processes caused significant (p < 0.05) decreases in crude protein, crude fat, total ash, mineral compositions, and crude fibre content of D.zibethinus seeds. However, all heat treatments employed significantly (p < 0.05) increased the moisture content and total carbohydrate content of D.zibethinus seeds. Heat treatments brought a total removal of ferum of treated D.zibethinus seeds. Raw and treated D.zibethinus seeds were evaluated for their antinutritional components including phytates, oxalates, saponins and tannins. Based on the results, raw D.zibethinus seeds showed the highest amount of phytates (864.94±12.24 mg/100g), oxalates (217.98±5.00 mg/100g), saponins (161.63±2.48 mg/100g) and tannins (564.44±7.18 mg/100g) while the least amount of antinutritional components were recorded in boiled D.zibethinus seeds with 181.32±4.46 mg/100g (79.04% reduction), 105.55±13.07 mg/100g (51.58% reduction), 60.22±1.27 mg/100g (62.74% reduction) and 232.19±4.92 mg/100g (58.79% reduction) for each phytates, oxalates, saponins and tannins respectively. All treatments conducted on D.zibethinus seeds caused significantly (p < 0.05) decreases in the level of all antinutritional factors studied as compared to the raw seeds. Boiling caused the highest reduction in the level of antinutritional factors in D.zibethinus seeds followed by autoclaving and microwave cooking

The miRNAs expression profile in acute myocardial infarction of young adults

    Get PDF
Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the most severe manifestation of coronary heart disease where Malaysians are getting AMI at younger age compared to well-developed countries. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, non-coding RNAs that play important regulatory roles in development of human pathologies. Materials and method: This study investigated the miRNA expression profile in 3 Controls, 3 Young AMI and 3 Mature AMI patients with matching criteria, using RNA sequencing, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses. Results: A total of 1599 miRNAs were differentially expressed in AMI patients compared to Controls, of which 1288 miRNAs were upregulated, and 311 miRNAs were downregulated. When miRNA expression profiles of Young AMI patients were compared to Mature AMI patients, a total of 1497 miRNAs were found to be differentially expressed, where 1090 miRNAs were upregulated, and 407 miRNAs were downregulated. The top 5 upregulated miRNAs were miR-552, miR-4446-3p, miR-432-5p, miR-548j-5p and miR-219; while the top 5 downregulated were miR-16, miR-1064, miR-431, miR-790 and miR-1177. For these 1497 differentially expressed miRNAs, 34,195 target genes were predicted by GO analysis. The enrichment analysis revealed 11,199 involved in biological processes, 10,984 in molecular functions and 12,012 in cellular components. Target genes of differently expressed miRNAs that were mapped in signal transduction pathway KEGG, revealed that 346 classes were enriched. Conclusion: Small RNA sequencing discovered previously unknown miRNAs and suggested that these miRNAs regulatory mechanisms on gene expression are closely involved in Young AMI. This could be a foundation study that requires further elaboration

Geopolymer Ceramic Application: A Review on Mix Design, Properties and Reinforcement Enhancement

    Get PDF
Geopolymers have been intensively explored over the past several decades and consid‐ ered as green materials and may be synthesised from natural sources and wastes. Global attention has been generated by the use of kaolin and calcined kaolin in the production of ceramics, green cement, and concrete for the construction industry and composite materials. The previous findings on ceramic geopolymer mix design and factors affecting their suitability as green ceramics are re‐ viewed. It has been found that kaolin offers significant benefit for ceramic geopolymer applications, including excellent chemical resistance, good mechanical properties, and good thermal properties that allow it to sinter at a low temperature, 200 °C. The review showed that ceramic geopolymers can be made from kaolin with a low calcination temperature that have similar properties to those made from high calcined temperature. However, the choice of alkali activator and chemical com‐ position should be carefully investigated, especially under normal curing conditions, 27 °C. A com‐ prehensive review of the properties of kaolin ceramic geopolymers is also presented, including compressive strength, chemical composition, morphological, and phase analysis. This review also highlights recent findings on the range of sintering temperature in the ceramic geopolymer field which should be performed between 600 °C and 1200 °C. A brief understanding of kaolin geopolymers with a few types of reinforcement towards property enhancement were covered. To improve toughness, the role of zirconia was highlighted. The addition of zirconia between 10% and 40% in geopolymer materials promises better properties and the mechanism reaction is presented. Findings from the review should be used to identify potential strategies that could develop the performance of the kaolin ceramic geopolymers industry in the electronics industry, cement, and biomedical materials

Effectiveness of dimple microtextured copper substrate on performance of Sn-0.7Cu solder alloy

    Get PDF
This paper elucidates the influence of dimple-microtextured copper substrate on the performance of Sn-0.7Cu solder alloy. A dimple with a diameter of 50 µm was produced by varying the dimple depth using different laser scanning repetitions, while the dimple spacing was fixed for each sample at 100 µm. The dimple-microtextured copper substrate was joined with Sn-0.7Cu solder alloy using the reflow soldering process. The solder joints’ wettability, microstructure, and growth of its intermetallic compound (IMC) layer were analysed to determine the influence of the dimple-microtextured copper substrate on the performance of the Sn-0.7Cu solder alloy. It was observed that increasing laser scan repetitions increased the dimples’ depth, resulting in higher surface roughness. In terms of soldering performance, it was seen that the solder joints’ average contact angle decreased with increasing dimple depth, while the average IMC thickness increased as the dimple depth increased. The copper element was more evenly distributed for the dimple-micro-textured copper substrate than its non-textured counterpart
