    Get PDF
Malaysia has adopted a method of policing, which is similar to the British’s Neighborhood Policing Teams (NPTs) called as Community-Oriented Policing (COP) in Malaysia. Community-oriented policing has been introduced to create a safer living environment. This concept is based on a partnership between police department and the communities, in which both parties will share the responsibility to identify, reduce, eliminate and prevent problems concerning community safety and order. Therefore, the spirit of community empowerment, smart ship, and interdependency between all stakeholders, including community, police, NGOs, and other interested parties are very much needed in this country through active and passive ways

Analyzing Street Art to Present the Heritage of George Town, Malaysia

Street art comprises all kinds of art developed in public locations. This form of art has spread to all heritage streets in George Town, the capital of Penang Island, which is also a known UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, instead of its heritage, food, and interesting past life and structure, the rapid multiplication of street art in George Town has created a new and unusual art that attracts tourists. Street art has spread to small roads and heritage streets in the city. This art increases the awareness of spectators by introducing them to the rich history of these streets and inducing a lively concept in the inner city of George Town. Accordingly, the impact of iron rod sculptures and murals, which comprises approximately 90% of street art in George Town, were determined to explore and identify the effects of this street art on this world heritage site. The findings were obtained from 263 out of 306 questionnaires accomplished by tourists in George Town. The results confirm that tourists prefer murals over iron rod sculptures. Iron rod sculptures are designed to tell the history of the street, whereas murals are designed to create aesthetic value. The findings indicated that similar to iron rod sculptures, more control should be exercised on the subjects of murals

AbstractIn gauging the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design elements in residential areas, the observation approach often used as a measurement method. However, these evaluations merely based on observations are seen to be inadequate. This is due to the fact that CPTED is closely tied to the community in order to ensure success of the concept. Therefore, the pilot study was conducted at gated residential areas located at Burmah Road at Bukit Jambul in Penang, Malaysia. The results found the level of reliability and validity using Cronbach Alpha (α) index for all components of CPTED are 0.6 and above

As landscape plays a crucial role in people’s lives, it is of great importance that landscape is designed based on people’s interest. Therefore, identification of the landscapes that people prefer and the factors that influence their perception are imperative. This research attempts to investigate the contribution of personality characteristics towards students’ landscape perception in Isfahan, Iran. In this aspect, students’ characteristics of extroversion/ introversion, intelligence, and creativity were measured by using Cattell’s 16PF Questionnaire. Also, the respondents were asked to express their feeling of satisfaction and happiness towards six common landscape types of Iran, by rating 30 images of mountainous, urban, forest, desert, water, and farmland landscapes. The results of Pearson Correlation Coefficient indicated that extroverted students have a greater feeling for both mountainous and urban landscapes than introverts. Also, less creative students preferred mountainous, urban, and farmland landscapes. Moreover, perception for farmland landscape was negatively correlated with intelligence among students

The concept of community oriented policing has emerged in Malaysia since 2007 as an increasingly important strategy for controlling and preventing crime, as well as for enhancing community safety. The concept has been endorsed in three phases. The first phase only involves Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, and Johor Police Contingents, while the second phase involves every police contingent at the state level in Malaysia, and lastly, followed by the third phase that involves every police contingent in every regional in every state in Malaysia. The Community Oriented Policing Strategy (COPS) is a partnership between the local residents and the police in charge of the district. COP is a belief that by working together the police and the community can accomplish what neither can accomplish alone. Thus, the spirit of community empowerment, smart ship, and interdependency between all stakeholders, including community, police, NGOs, and other interested parties are very much needed in this country through active and inactive. The purposes of this paper are; (a) to determine the importance of COP, (b) to evaluate the community awareness towards COP implementation in Malaysia

Fear of crime affects quality of life

The current crime situation today creates public anxiety and is a constant source of discussion and debate along the corridors of academia, profesional and parties involved in the field. Almost every day we hear news of crime which increases our feelings of fear and highlights our concern regarding the level of public safety. This anxiety also reflects the Statistical Crime Report from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) indicating an increase in criminal cases from the year 2005 to the year 2007. This fear concerns the dip in quality of life that could affect social activities and the national economic well-being. Feelings of fear of crime exceeding actual crime rate gives an illustration of the ebb of social life today and loss of faith in designs for public safety. Fear of crime affects many people and needs to be taken seriously. Although statistically most people have a low chance of becoming a victim of crime, many people nevertheless fear crime. This scenario occurs because almost everyday we come across reports of crime and violence in Malaysia. There have been many reports of crime: snatch thefts, rapes, and other sex-related crimes, assaults and murders, child abuse and ill treatment of foreign maids, hold-ups and petty thefts, kidnappings, fatal road accidents, etc. With this barrage of media reporting, there is an air of anxiety and fear as to what the future will hold for our Malaysian society and subsequently their quality of life. These reports give the impression that our safety in Malaysia is decreased. This follows the depreciation of Public Safety Index in the Malaysian Quality of Life Index (MQLI) 2004. Therefore, fear of crime has become an important issue of public concern which detracts from the quality of life. This paper will discuss the existing causes of fear of crime and trends of crime in Malaysia as important aspects of deterioration in quality of life of Malaysians. Prevention of crime through environmental design will also be discussed in this paper as it has now become a national initiative in overcoming the stated problem in Malaysia

Towards green roads in Malaysia : review of road characteristics effects on road surrounding microclimate with respect to roadside trees / Nasibeh FaghihMirzaei ... [et al.]

Due to the rapid Malaysian metropolitan development, some amount of forests and vegetation have been replaced by impervious and artificial urban road surfaces, lead to increasing ambient temperature of many Malaysian urban areas. Urban greenery including roadside trees planting is believed to be a useful mitigation strategy of road surface temperature and thus the local ambient temperature. Malaysian cities appear to have different roadside roads conditions which help cooling the air and providing shade. Many researchers have suggested various environmentally methods to alleviate ambient air temperature by planting the vegetation in urban areas which are closely connected to the roads of a city. However, there is a lack of studies to concern influence factors of roadside trees and road characteristics on each other in the face of surface and air temperature reduction surrounding the road. This study first identifies a pattern on the effects of road characteristics, including road orientation and road width with an overview on the capabilities of roadside tree planting and road design to mitigate road surrounding microclimate. It then provides guidelines for urban development towards green roads in a tropical city
