Floquet Prethermalization in a Bose-Hubbard System
Periodic driving has emerged as a powerful tool in the quest to engineer new
and exotic quantum phases. While driven many-body systems are generically
expected to absorb energy indefinitely and reach an infinite-temperature state,
the rate of heating can be exponentially suppressed when the drive frequency is
large compared to the local energy scales of the system -- leading to
long-lived 'prethermal' regimes. In this work, we experimentally study a
bosonic cloud of ultracold atoms in a driven optical lattice and identify such
a prethermal regime in the Bose-Hubbard model. By measuring the energy
absorption of the cloud as the driving frequency is increased, we observe an
exponential-in-frequency reduction of the heating rate persisting over more
than 2 orders of magnitude. The tunability of the lattice potentials allows us
to explore one- and two-dimensional systems in a range of different interacting
regimes. Alongside the exponential decrease, the dependence of the heating rate
on the frequency displays features characteristic of the phase diagram of the
Bose-Hubbard model, whose understanding is additionally supported by numerical
simulations in one dimension. Our results show experimental evidence of the
phenomenon of Floquet prethermalization, and provide insight into the
characterization of heating for driven bosonic systems
Vibration energy harvesting via parametrically-induced bistability
The dynamic response to white Gaussian noise of a bistable non-linear vibration energy harvester based on the repulsive electrostatic interaction between a microcantilever and an electrode has been theoretically studied. The cantilever-electrode system can be brought from a linear regime characterized by a quadratic potential, when cantilever is far from the electrode, to a non-linear bistable regime characterized by a quartic potential, when both elements are close enough. This distance parameter, which is commonly used to tune bistability, is unusually used here also to inject the energy to the system in the form of displacement noise. Thus, the widening and shifting to the low-frequency region of the response spectrum as well as the enhancement of the rms out-of-plane vibration of the cantilever are both demonstrated through this parametrically-induced bistability
Integrated tunneling sensor for nanoelectromechanical systems
Transducers based on quantum mechanical tunneling provide an extremely sensitive sensor principle, especially for nanoelectromechanical systems. For proper operation a gap between the electrodes of below 1nm is essential, requiring the use of structures with a mobile electrode. At such small distances, attractive van der Waals and capillary forces become sizable, possibly resulting in snap-in of the electrodes. The authors present a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the interplay between the involved forces and identify requirements for the design of tunnelingsensors. Based on this analysis, a tunnelingsensor is fabricated by Si micromachiningtechnology and its proper operation is demonstrated
Ibero-American Society of Interventionism (SIDI) and the Spanish Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (SERVEI) Standard of Practice (SOP) for the management of inferior Vena Cava filters in the treatment of acute venous Thromboembolism
Objectives: to present an interventional radiology standard of practice on the use of inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) in patients with or at risk to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) from the Iberoamerican Interventional Society (SIDI) and Spanish Vascular and Interventional Radiology Society (SERVEI). Methods: a group of twenty-two interventional radiologist experts, from the SIDI and SERVEI societies, attended online meetings to develop a current clinical practice guideline on the proper indication for the placement and retrieval of IVCFs. A broad review was undertaken to determine the participation of interventional radiologists in the current guidelines and a consensus on inferior vena cava filters. Twenty-two experts from both societies worked on a common draft and received a questionnaire where they had to assess, for IVCF placement, the absolute, relative, and prophylactic indications. The experts voted on the different indications and reasoned their decision. Results: a total of two-hundred-thirty-three articles were reviewed. Interventional radiologists participated in the development of just two of the eight guidelines. The threshold for inclusion was 100% agreement. Three absolute and four relative indications for the IVCF placement were identified. No indications for the prophylactic filter placement reached the threshold. Conclusion: interventional radiologists are highly involved in the management of IVCFs but have limited participation in the development of multidisciplinary clinical practice guidelines
ABSense: Sensing Electromagnetic Waves on Metasurfaces via Ambient Compilation of Full Absorption
Metasurfaces constitute effective media for manipulating and transforming
impinging EM waves. Related studies have explored a series of impactful MS
capabilities and applications in sectors such as wireless communications,
medical imaging and energy harvesting. A key-gap in the existing body of work
is that the attributes of the EM waves to-be-controlled (e.g., direction,
polarity, phase) are known in advance. The present work proposes a practical
solution to the EM wave sensing problem using the intelligent and networked MS
counterparts-the HyperSurfaces (HSFs), without requiring dedicated field
sensors. An nano-network embedded within the HSF iterates over the possible MS
configurations, finding the one that fully absorbs the impinging EM wave, hence
maximizing the energy distribution within the HSF. Using a distributed
consensus approach, the nano-network then matches the found configuration to
the most probable EM wave traits, via a static lookup table that can be created
during the HSF manufacturing. Realistic simulations demonstrate the potential
of the proposed scheme. Moreover, we show that the proposed workflow is the
first-of-its-kind embedded EM compiler, i.e., an autonomic HSF that can
translate high-level EM behavior objectives to the corresponding, low-level EM

Graphene-based Wireless Agile Interconnects for Massive Heterogeneous Multi-chip Processors
The main design principles in computer architecture have recently shifted from a monolithic scaling-driven approach to the development of heterogeneous architectures that tightly co-integrate multiple specialized processor and memory chiplets. In such data-hungry multi-chip architectures, current Networksin- Package (NiPs) may not be enough to cater to their heterogeneous and fast-changing communication demands. This position paper makes the case for wireless in-package networking as the enabler of efficient and versatile wired-wireless interconnect fabrics for massive heterogeneous processors. To that end, the use of graphene-based antennas and transceivers with unique frequency-beam reconfigurability in the terahertz band is proposed. The feasibility of such a wireless vision and the main research challenges towards its realization are analyzed from the technological, communications, and computer architecture perspectives
Cardiovascular risk estimated after 13 years of follow-up in a low-incidence Mediterranean region with high-prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Murcia (south-east Spain) shows increased cardiovascular (CV) morbimortality as compared to other Spanish regions. Our objective was to assess the CV risk associated with major risk factors (RF) among adult population of Murcia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cohort of 2314 subjects (18-70 years) with full biochemical and questionnaire data was followed-up for 13 years. Incident cases of ischemic heart disease and stroke were identified by record linkage, individual questionnaires and revision of medical records. Relative risks were obtained by multivariate Cox regression stratified by age and sex, and ischemic risk attributable to CVRF was calculated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After more than 26276 person-years of follow-up, 57 incident ischemic events (77% men) and 37 stroke cases (62% men) were identified. Independent risk factors of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and all CV events combined, with RR ranging from 1.6 to 2.6, were total serum cholesterol ≥ 240 mg/dl (HR = 2.6, 95%CI:1.3-5.1), blood pressure levels ≥ 140/90 mmHg (HR = 2.6, 95%CI:1.4-4.8), ever tobacco smoking (HR = 2.2; 95%CI:1.1-4.5), and diabetes (HR = 2.0; 95%CI: 1.0-3.8). No increased CV risk was detected for known participants under treatment who showed cholesterol and blood pressure values below the clinical risk threshold. Smoking was significantly associated with stroke. For all events combined, the major risk factors were hypercholesterolemia, hypertension and ever use of tobacco. Despite its high prevalence, obesity was not associated to CV risk. Most of the IHD cases were attributable to smoking (44%), hypertension (38%) and hypercholesterolemia (26%).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In the Region of Murcia, smoking accounted for the largest proportion of cardiovascular risk, whereas hypertension displaced hypercholesterolemia as the second leading cause of CV disease. Our study deepens in our understanding of the cardiovascular epidemiology in Spanish areas of Mediterranean Europe with relatively high cardiovascular morbimortality, that are poorly represented by the available risk equations.</p
Neutrophil count is associated with reduced gray matter and enlarged ventricles in first-episode psychosis
Although there is recent evidence that cells from the peripheral immune system can gain access to the central nervous system in certain conditions such as multiple sclerosis, their role has not been assessed in psychosis. Here, we aimed to explore whether blood cell count was associated with brain volume and/or clinical symptomatology. A total of 218 participants (137 first-episode psychosis patients [FEP] and 81 healthy controls [HC]) were included in the study. For each participant, a T1 structural image was acquired, from which brain tissue volumes were calculated. We found that, in FEP, neutrophil count was associated with reduced gray matter (GM) volume (ß = -0.117, P < .001) and increased cerebrospinal fluid volume (ß = 0.191, P = .007). No associations were observed in HC. GM reduction was generalized but more prominent in certain regions, notably the thalamus, the anterior insula, and the left Heschl''s gyrus, among many others. Neutrophil count was also associated with the total PANSS score (ß = 0.173, P = .038), including those items assessing hallucinations (ß = 0.182, P = .028) and avolition (ß = 0.197, P = .018). Several confounders, such as antipsychotic medication, body mass index, and smoking, were controlled for. Overall, the present study may represent the first indirect evidence of brain tissue loss associated with neutrophils in psychosis, and lends support to the hypothesis of a dysregulated immune system. Higher neutrophil count was also associated with more severe clinical symptomatology, which renders it a promising indicator of schizophrenia severity and could even give rise to new therapies
The development of political science in Central and Eastern Europe : bibliometric perspective, 1996–2013
This research aims to develop a deeper insight into the development of political science from the bibliometric perspective by analysing peer-reviewed journal articles (n = 1117) indexed in the Scopus database and published by authors from fifteen Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries in the period 1996–2013. Results indicate that the majority of articles (84%) by CEE authors have been published in international journals and in the English language. The visibility of these articles in international journals, measured by the mean number of citations, is 5.2 per paper, while the same indicator for CEE journal articles amounts to 0.2. Authorship analysis indicates a gradual but continuous increase in co-authorships. Additionally, there are significant differences in citations between single-authored and co-authored articles, both in international and CEE journals. Co-authorship among CEE authors is present in only 1% of the analysed articles, confirming weak collaboration between political scientists in CEE countries
Therapeutic implications of selecting the SCORE (European) versus the D'AGOSTINO (American) risk charts for cardiovascular risk assessment in hypertensive patients
Background: No comparisons have been made of scales estimating cardiovascular mortality and overall cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The study objectives were to assess the agreement between the Framingham-D'Agostino cardiovascular risk (CVR) scale and the chart currently recommended in Europe (SCORE) with regard to identification of patients with high CVR, and to describe the discrepancies between them and the attendant implications for the treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidaemia. Methods: A total of 474 hypertensive patients aged 40-65 years monitored in primary care were enrolled into the study. CVR was assessed using the Framingham-D'Agostino scale, which estimates the overall cardiovascular morbidity and mortality risk, and the SCORE chart, which estimates the cardiovascular mortality risk. Cardiovascular risk was considered to be high for values ≥ 20% and ≥ 5% according to the Framingham-D'Agostino and SCORE charts respectively. Kappa statistics was estimated for agreement in classification of patients with high CVR. The therapeutic recommendations in the 2007 European Guidelines on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention were followed. Results
