QCD saturation at the LHC: comparisons of models to p+p and A+A data and predictions for p+Pb collisions
In a previous paper (arXiv:1011.1895), we showed that saturation models,
constrained by e+p HERA data on inclusive and diffractive cross-sections, are
in good agreement with p+p data at LHC in the soft sector. Particularly
impressive was the agreement of saturation models with the multiplicity
distribution as a function of . In this paper, we extend these
studies further and consider the agreement of these models with data on bulk
distributions in A+A collisions. We compare our results to data on central and
forward particle production in d+Au collisions at RHIC and make predictions for
inclusive distributions in p+Pb collisions at the LHC.Comment: 11 pages, 21 figures. Version 2 corrects for typos. All results are

Physician communication styles in initial consultations for hematological cancer
Objective
To characterize practices in subspecialist physiciansâ communication styles, and their potential effects on shared decision-making, in second-opinion consultations.
Methods
Theme-oriented discourse analysis of 20 second-opinion consultations with subspecialist hematologist-oncologists.
Results
Physicians frequently âbroadcastedâ information about the disease, treatment options, relevant research, and prognostic information in extended, often-uninterrupted monologues. Their communicative styles had one of two implications: conveying options without offering specific recommendations, or recommending one without incorporating patientsâ goals and values into the decision. Some physicians, however, used techniques that encouraged patient participation.
Conclusions
Broadcasting may be a suboptimal method of conveying complex treatment information in order to support shared decision-making. Interventions could teach techniques that encourage patient participation.
Practice Implications
Techniques such as open-ended questions, affirmations of patientsâ expressions, and pauses to check for patient understanding can mitigate the effects of broadcasting and could be used to promote shared decision-making in information-dense subspecialist consultations.Other Research Uni
Age and gender differences in narcissism: A comprehensive study across eight measures and over 250,000 participants
Age and gender differences in narcissism have been studied often. However, considering the rich history of narcissism research accompanied by its diverging conceptualizations, little is known about age and gender differences across various narcissism measures. The present study investigated age and gender differences and their interactions across eight widely used narcissism instruments (i.e., Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale, Dirty Dozen, Psychological Entitlement Scale, Narcissistic Personality Disorder Symptoms from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Version IV, Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire-Short Form, Single-Item Narcissism Scale, and brief version of the Pathological Narcissism Inventory). The findings of Study 1 (N = 5,736) revealed heterogeneity in how strongly the measures are correlated. Some instruments loaded clearly on one of the three factors proposed by previous research (i.e., Neuroticism, Extraversion, Antagonism), while others cross-loaded across factors and in distinct ways. Cross-sectional analyses using each measure and meta-analytic results across all measures (Study 2) with a total sample of 270,029 participants suggest consistent linear age effects (random effects meta-analytic effect of r = -.104), with narcissism being highest in young adulthood. Consistent gender differences also emerged (random effects meta-analytic effect was -.079), such that men scored higher in narcissism than women. Quadratic age effects and Age Ă Gender effects were generally very small and inconsistent. We conclude that despite the various conceptualizations of narcissism, age and gender differences are generalizable across the eight measures used in the present study. However, their size varied based on the instrument used. We discuss the sources of this heterogeneity and the potential mechanisms for age and gender differences
Dark sectors 2016 Workshop: community report
This report, based on the Dark Sectors workshop at SLAC in April 2016,
summarizes the scientific importance of searches for dark sector dark matter
and forces at masses beneath the weak-scale, the status of this broad
international field, the important milestones motivating future exploration,
and promising experimental opportunities to reach these milestones over the
next 5-10 years

Study on cosmogenic activation above ground for the DarkSide-20k project
The activation of materials due to the exposure to cosmic rays may become an
important background source for experiments investigating rare event phenomena.
DarkSide-20k is a direct detection experiment for galactic dark matter
particles, using a two-phase liquid argon time projection chamber filled with
49.7 tonnes (active mass) of Underground Argon (UAr) depleted in 39Ar. Here,
the cosmogenic activity of relevant long-lived radioisotopes induced in the
argon and other massive components of the set-up has been estimated; production
of 120 t of radiopure UAr is foreseen. The expected exposure above ground and
production rates, either measured or calculated, have been considered. From the
simulated counting rates in the detector due to cosmogenic isotopes, it is
concluded that activation in copper and stainless steel is not problematic.
Activation of titanium, considered in early designs but not used in the final
design, is discussed. The activity of 39Ar induced during extraction,
purification and transport on surface, in baseline conditions, is evaluated to
be 2.8% of the activity measured in UAr from the same source, and thus
considered acceptable. Other products in the UAr such as 37Ar and 3H are shown
to not be relevant due to short half-life and assumed purification methods
Measurement of isotopic separation of argon with the prototype of the cryogenic distillation plant Aria for dark matter searches
The Aria cryogenic distillation plant, located in Sardinia, Italy, is a key component of the DarkSide-20k experimental program for WIMP dark matter searches at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. Aria is designed to purify the argon, extracted from underground wells in Colorado, USA, and used as the DarkSide-20k target material, to detector-grade quality. In this paper, we report the first measurement of argon isotopic separation by distillation with the 26 m tall Aria prototype. We discuss the measurement of the operating parameters of the column and the observation of the simultaneous separation of the three stable argon isotopes: 36Ar , 38Ar , and 40Ar . We also provide a detailed comparison of the experimental results with commercial process simulation software. This measurement of isotopic separation of argon is a significant achievement for the project, building on the success of the initial demonstration of isotopic separation of nitrogen using the same equipment in 2019
