Short Story in an ESL Freshman English Course: Bridging the Gap between language and literature

[EN] In recent years, the place of literature in language teaching has regained its impetus and the prominent role it plays in promoting linguistic, cultural, intellectual and academic benefits has been acknowledged. Nevertheless, the place of literature in language teaching context in Turkey is still approached to be an outside source to be assigned as extensive reading rather than to be a classroom worthy material to be utilized in class. This article describes a literature lesson at a Freshman Englih level and outlines the steps to be taken to implement language based activities to promote ‘language awareness’ and to foster ‘meaning construction’ and ‘cultural awareness’ in a process based classroom setting. The steps also show that ESL Freshman students have much to gain from literature when the text is explored through language based activities without losing the literary nature of literature. Keywords: literature; short story; esl; once upon a time; freshman English; turkeyAvci Vile, DE. Background: Although myocardial bridge (MB) is a benign congenital anomaly, clinical trials have shown it to cause increased risk of atherosclerosis, which is a low-grade chronic inflammatory disease. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory indicator for mortality and morbidity in atherosclerotic heart disease. In this study, NLR was investigated in patients with MB.Methods: A retrospective evaluation was made of patients admitted to our clinic for coronary angiography from 01st January 2014 to 31st December 2015. Patients included in the study were those diagnosed with MB and no evidence of atherosclerosis after coronary angiography and patients diagnosed with normal coronary vascularity. The NLR was calculated from the biochemical and hematological parameters based on the results of pre-angiographic values. Results: Evaluation was made of 53 patients with MB (mean age: 56.70±11.45 years, 73.6% male), and 59 patients with normal coronary vascularity (mean age: 52.25±12.42 years, 39% male). No significant difference was determined between the groups in respect of biochemical or hematological parameters or in NLR values (2.34±0.88 versus 2.56±1.66; p=0.384).Conclusions: The results of this study showed no relationship between MB and the inflammatory indicator of NLR

Crisis management has become a requirement for businesses particularly in tourism industry. In spite of the limited studies carried out in this field in Turkey, the survey of the subject has significance in practices undergone by travel agencies, which are the backbones of the tourism industry. In this context we aim to analyze the measures and practices adopted by travel agencies during periods of crisis; determine the frequency of utilization of these measures and practices during periods of crisis; and, analyze the positive and negative effects of crisis on travel agencies. Quantitative approach has been adopted in the study and 357 valid questionnaires were analyzed through inferential statistics. Findings suggest that developing practices for new marketing policies appear as the first factor and is practiced more frequently than other applications. Cohesiveness to crisis process and organizational preparatory work are seen to stand out. Particularly, adaptation of work processes in harmony with the new circumstances, and the need for adopting new approaches through reviewing the management process, implementation of a flexible management concept that adapts quickly to the new conditions are encountered as the most significant practices. Evidence obtained provides managers of travel agencies with necessary measures related to difficulties faced, as well as suggestions for the preparatory phase of potential crisis. Additionally, this research undergone for travel agencies, will contribute to the crisis planning and management literature in Turkey

OBJECTIVE: Serum prolactin levels rise in so many diseases concerning autoimmune. To demonstrate the relationship between the Behçet Disease that has a  common  trend of being defined as an autoimmune multisystem disease and the level of serum prolactin, an immunstimulant hormon of adenohypophysis and to check the literature and including our results among them, we have looked the prolactin levels of patients  who are active in dermatological diagnosis and do not take any cure for the disease and we have searched whether there is relationship between the disease and serum prolactin levels MATERIAL AND METHODS: 43 patients were taken for the study.21 female and 22 male.20 healthy people similar in age and sex were used in the control group. Patients in Behçet group were in the active period of their illnesses in terms of oral apthe , genital apthe , erythema nodosum  and patergy(+). In addition, artralgia accompanied the chart in 20 patients. RESULTS: Male prolactin average in Behçet group was 11.63 and in control group it was 10.19. There was not a significant prolactin level difference between the two groups (t=1.272, p=0.264.). Female prolactin average in Behçet group was 9.84 and it was 7.21 in Control group. The difference was not meaningful in terms of statistical evaluation. CONCLUSION: No meaningful difference was detected both in Behçet and Control group in terms of prolactin. In our study, as a result unlike it was observed in some other auto-immune disease events, a relation between Behçet disease and prolactin could not been introduced.</p

Objectives. The purpose is to investigate effect of septoplasty and widened nasal patency on voice quality. Methods. Fifty patients who undergone septoplasty were included in the study. Thirty-three people who had similar age and distribution were enrolled as control group. Before and 1 and 3 months after surgery, anterior rhinomanometry, voice analysis by Multi-Dimensional Voice Program, and spectrographic analysis were performed to patients. The recordings of /a/ vowel were used to evaluate average fundamental frequency (F0), jitter percent, and shimmer percent. In spectrographic analyses, F3–F4 values for the vowels /i, e, a, o, and u/, nasal formant frequencies of the consonants /m/ and /n/ in the word /mini/, and 4 formant frequencies (F1, F2, F3, and F4) for nasalized /i/ vowel following a nasal consonant /n/ in the word /mini/ were compared. The differences in nasal resonance were evaluated. All patients were asked whether change in their voices after the surgery. Preoperative and postoperative voice parameters and anterior rhinomanometry results were compared separately with the control group as well as in the patient group itself. Results. Preoperative total nasal resistance (TNR) values of patients were higher than the control group (P=0.001). TNR values of patients measured one day before surgery and after surgery in the 1st and 3rd months were different and these differences were significant statistically (P=0.001). There was no significant difference between the voice analysis parameters in preoperative, postoperative 1st, and 3rd months. As a result of their subjective reviews, 12 patients (36%) noted their voices were better than before surgery and 20 patients (61%) noted no change before and after surgery. Conclusion. Providing widened nasal cavity has no effect on voice quality

The aim of this study is to investigate whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR), and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) parameters could be used as biomarkers for canine malignant mammary tumors (MMTs), and the changes in these parameters according to different tumor (T), lymph node (N), and metastasis (M) stages (TNM I-II-III, TNM IV, TNM V) and the number of affected mammary glands (single, multiple). Thirty-seven with MMT and 20 healthy dogs were used in this study. Complete blood count and biochemistry analysis were performed in all dogs. Tumor material is removed by tru-cut and sent to the pathology laboratory for diagnosis. NLR, PLR, and SII values increased, and LMR and PNI values decreased in dogs with MMT. Median NLR values increased and median LMR and PNI values decreased as the TNM stage progressed. In dogs with a single MMT, median NLR, and PLR values were found to be lower than in dogs with multiple MMTs, and median LMR, SII, AGR, and PNI values were higher. The present results indicated that NLR, LMR, PLR, SII, and PNI parameters could be used as biomarkers for canine MMT. Also, NLR, LMR, PLR, SII, PNI, and AGR parameters may be valuable biomarkers that reveal the degree of systemic immune response according to different TNM stages and the number of affected mammary glands
