A reduction method for semi-infinite programming by means of a global stochastic approach
We describe a reduction algorithm for solving semi-infinite programming problems. The proposed algorithm uses the simulated annealing method equipped with a function stretching as a multi-local procedure, and a penalty technique for the finite optimization process. An exponential penalty merit function is reduced along each search direction to ensure convergence from any starting point. Our preliminary numerical results seem to show that the algorithm is very promising in practice.Algoritmi Research CenterFundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - bolsa POCI/MAT/58957/200
Effects of hydroxyapatite and PDGF concentrations on osteoblast growth in a nanohydroxyapatite-polylactic acid composite for guided tissue regeneration
The technique of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) has evolved over recent years in an attempt to achieve periodontal tissue regeneration by the use of a barrier membrane. However, there are significant limitations in the currently available membranes and overall outcomes may be limited. A degradable composite material was investigated as a potential GTR membrane material. Polylactic acid (PLA) and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) composite was analysed, its bioactive potential and suitability as a carrier system for growth factors were assessed. The effect of nHA concentrations and the addition of platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation was investigated. The bioactivity was dependent on the nHA concentration in the films, with more apatite deposited on films containing higher nHA content. Osteoblasts proliferated well on samples containing low nHA content and differentiated on films with higher nHA content. The composite films were able to deliver PDGF and cell proliferation increased on samples that were pre absorbed with the growth factor. nHA–PLA composite films are able to deliver active PDGF. In addition the bioactivity and cell differentiation was higher on films containing more nHA. The use of a nHA–PLA composite material containing a high concentration of nHA may be a useful material for GTR membrane as it will not only act as a barrier, but may also be able to enhance bone regeneration by delivery of biologically active molecules

Comparing composite likelihood methods based on pairs for spatial Gaussian random fields
In the last years there has been a growing interest in proposing methods for estimating covariance functions for geostatistical data. Among these, maximum likelihood estimators have nice features when we deal with a Gaussian model. However maximum likelihood becomes impractical when the number of observations is very large. In this work we review some solutions and we contrast them in terms of loss of statistical efficiency and computational burden. Specifically we focus on three types of weighted composite likelihood functions based on pairs and we compare them with the method of covariance tapering. Asymptotic properties of the three estimation methods are derived. We illustrate the effectiveness of the methods through theoretical examples, simulation experiments and by analyzing a data set on yearly total precipitation anomalies at weather stations in the United States. In the last years there has been a growing interest in proposing methods for estimating covariance functions for geostatistical data. Universal switching of plasmonic signals using optical resonator modes
We propose and investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, a novel mechanism for switching and modulating plasmonic
signals based on a Fano interference process, which arises from the coupling between a narrow-band optical Fabry–Pérot cavity
and a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) source. The SPP wave emitted from the cavity is actively modulated in the vicinity of the
cavity resonances by altering the cavity Q-factor and/or resonant frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate dynamic SPP modulation
both by mechanical control of the cavity length and all-optically by harnessing the ultrafast nonlinearity of the Au mirrors
that form the cavity. An electro-optical modulation scheme is also proposed and numerically illustrated. Dynamic operation of
the switch via mechanical means yields a modulation in the SPP coupling efficiency of ~ 80%, while the all-optical control provides
an ultrafast modulation with an efficiency of 30% at a rate of ~ 0.6 THz. The experimental observations are supported by
both analytical and numerical calculations of the mechanical, all-optical and electro-optical modulation methods
A Fokker-Planck formalism for diffusion with finite increments and absorbing boundaries
Gaussian white noise is frequently used to model fluctuations in physical
systems. In Fokker-Planck theory, this leads to a vanishing probability density
near the absorbing boundary of threshold models. Here we derive the boundary
condition for the stationary density of a first-order stochastic differential
equation for additive finite-grained Poisson noise and show that the response
properties of threshold units are qualitatively altered. Applied to the
integrate-and-fire neuron model, the response turns out to be instantaneous
rather than exhibiting low-pass characteristics, highly non-linear, and
asymmetric for excitation and inhibition. The novel mechanism is exhibited on
the network level and is a generic property of pulse-coupled systems of
threshold units.Comment: Consists of two parts: main article (3 figures) plus supplementary

Distinguishing Asthma Phenotypes Using Machine Learning Approaches.
Asthma is not a single disease, but an umbrella term for a number of distinct diseases, each of which are caused by a distinct underlying pathophysiological mechanism. These discrete disease entities are often labelled as asthma endotypes. The discovery of different asthma subtypes has moved from subjective approaches in which putative phenotypes are assigned by experts to data-driven ones which incorporate machine learning. This review focuses on the methodological developments of one such machine learning technique-latent class analysis-and how it has contributed to distinguishing asthma and wheezing subtypes in childhood. It also gives a clinical perspective, presenting the findings of studies from the past 5 years that used this approach. The identification of true asthma endotypes may be a crucial step towards understanding their distinct pathophysiological mechanisms, which could ultimately lead to more precise prevention strategies, identification of novel therapeutic targets and the development of effective personalized therapies
Recycled gabbro signature in hotspot magmas unveiled by plume–ridge interactions
Lavas erupted within plate interiors above upwelling mantle
plumes have chemical signatures that are distinct from midocean
ridge lavas. When a plume interacts with a mid-ocean
ridge, the compositions of both their lavas changes, but there
is no consensus as to how this interaction occurs1–3. For the
past 15 Myr, the Pacific–Antarctic mid-ocean ridge has been
approaching the Foundation hotspot4 and erupted lavas have
formed seamounts. Here we analyse the noble gas isotope
and trace element signature of lava samples collected from
the seamounts. We find that both intraplate and on-axis
lavas have noble gas isotope signatures consistent with the
contribution from a primitive plume source. In contrast, nearaxis
lavas show no primitive noble gas isotope signatures, but
are enriched in strontium and lead, indicative of subducted
former oceanic lower crust melting within the plume source5–7.
We propose that, in a near-ridge setting, primitive, plumesourced
magmas formed deep in the plume are preferentially
channelled to and erupted at the ridge-axis. The remaining
residue continues to rise and melt, forming the near-axis
seamounts. With the deep melts removed, the geochemical
signature of subduction contained within the residue becomes
apparent. Lavas with strontium and lead enrichments are found
worldwide where plumes meet mid-ocean ridges6–8, suggesting
that subducted lower crust is an important but previously
unrecognised plume component
