One of the most influencing factors in the success of police investigation is police investigators’ skills in eliciting accurate and reliable information from witnesses. Psychology researchers in the United States of America dan Europe continue to illustrate the effectiveness of the cognitive interviewing method in retrieving witnesses’ memory and recommend it globally. The Indonesian police force has not yet applied such a method. When it was introduced to the Indonesian police, forensic linguists have concerns with its linguistic viability. This paper brings together the research and arguments from the two disciplines of psychology and language in the legal and policing environment. This paper suggests a new way forward for future research on investigative interviewing, more specifically on investigating a humane model of witness interviewing appropriate to use in the Indonesian contexts, and encourage more psychological scientists, linguists, legal scholars and law enforcement officers to work together to understand the broader implications of the cognitive interviewing method in the Indonesian police interviews

Non-native English scholars are expected to publish international journals with abstracts written in English. There are a lot of factors that caused the rejection of journal article publication; one of them is disorganized writing styles. Compared to the native English speakers, the issues regarding disorganized writing styles appeared more in the non-native English speakers’ research article since they have different writing styles, cultures, and mother tongues. Abstract Coaching Clinic Workshop was held for Indonesian University of Education (UPI) scholars so that it is hoped that there would be an increase in the quality of composing research article abstracts and an increase in the number of international publications from scholars. The purpose of this research is to uncover rhetorical moves and genre of the abstracts, its genre development, as well as the linguistics features used in the abstracts. Thirty abstracts made by fifteen UPI scholars who were also the participants of the Abstract Coaching Clinic Workshop were collected as the data for the analysis. Hyland’s (2000) theory was used to analyze each move and step of the abstracts. The results show the occurrence frequency of each move and step, along with the linguistic features used by the academicians; and the development of their abstract writing from before and after the coaching clinic session. The findings serve as a potential reference for those researchers that are concerned in discourse analysis, cross-cultural abstracts, and research publication needs

AN ANALYSIS OF RHETORICAL MOVE AND TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES IN UNDERGRADUATE THESIS ABSTRACTS WRITTEN IN TWO LANGUAGES

An abstract is a brief overview of a research paper. Indonesian undergraduate students are often required to submit their thesis abstracts in Indonesian and English. Various studies related to rhetorical move and translation techniques of abstracts have been done previously, but not many analyzed undergraduate students’ thesis abstracts across languages. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the move-step of the abstracts, and to see translation techniques in different abstract moves. This study used 60 undergraduate thesis abstracts from English Language and Literature and Indonesian Language Literature study programs as the data. As the framework for the data analysis, this study employed Hyland’s (2000) five-move model and Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques. The findings show that despite writing in different languages, both Indonesian and English abstracts were realized with similar rhetorical moves and steps. Move 3 and 4 were found in all of the abstracts, while Move 5 was only realized in small numbers across languages. In relation to translation techniques, it is found that Literal translation is used more frequently than other translation techniques. This study recommends a more extensive study that involves more data from different fields to expand the existing knowledge relating to rhetorical move and translation techniques in the academic field, especially in undergraduate students’ abstracts

The issue of proving cases of Sexual Violence Crime (SVC), also known as Tindak Pidana Kekerasan Seksual (TPKS), remains a challenging endeavor. Police investigators must employ a range of tactics in order to uncover the truth around a case of sexual violence. The objective of this study is to examine speech act tactics, specifically aggressive speech acts employed by police investigators during the process of interviewing a witness who has experienced sexual violence. The same interview was investigated in separate studies undertaken by Read et al. (2009), Westera et al. (2011), and Westera and Kebbel (2014). Nevertheless, prior scholarly investigations have mostly concentrated on the dynamics between law enforcement agents and those accused of sexual violence crimes. The present study constitutes an investigation in the field of forensic linguistics, with a specific emphasis on the examination of language usage within the context of legal procedures. The chosen methodology for this study is qualitative research. This study endeavors to analyze, investigate, and examine forceful statements made by law enforcement officers. The research data was collected through the observation of the interview procedure conducted by the Kepolisian Resor Kota (Polresta) Cilacap investigators with a witness who had experienced sexual violence. The acquired data was subsequently subjected to analysis utilizing Searle's (1979) theory of speech acts, with a particular focus on aggressive speech acts. The findings indicate that the police investigators employed aggressive speech patterns as a means to reinforce the information provided by the victim-witness. The reaffirmation is frequently conveyed by the use of a rhetorical tag, commonly referred to as "ya," appended to the end of the speech. Nevertheless, the assertive statement articulated by investigator H also exhibits elements of surprise, guides cognitive processes, and offers advice or suggestions
