    Ice thickness and volume changes across the Southern Alps, New Zealand, from the little ice age to present

    Rapid changes observed today in mountain glaciers need to be put into a longer-term context to understand global sea-level contributions, regional climate-glacier systems and local landscape evolution. In this study we determined volume changes for 400 mountain glaciers across the Southern Alps, New Zealand for three time periods; pre-industrial “Little Ice Age (LIA)” to 1978, 1978 to 2009 and 2009 to 2019. At least 60 km3 ± 12 km3 or between 41 and 62% of the LIA total ice volume has been lost. The rate of mass loss has nearly doubled from − 0.4 m w.e year−1 during 1,600 to 1978 to − 0.7 m w.e year−1 at present. In comparison Patagonia has lost just 11% of it’s LIA volume. Glacier ice in the Southern Alps has become restricted to higher elevations and to large debris-covered ablation tongues terminating in lakes. The accelerating rate of ice loss reflects regional-specific climate conditions and suggests that peak glacial meltwater production is imminent if not already passed, which has profound implications for water resources and riverine habitats

    Persistence of drift pumice in southern Australasian waters

    Drift pumice from the 1962 South Sandwich Islands eruption was observed to persist in Southern Australasian waters five and a half years after its eruption and over four years after its first appearance in these waters. Mostly fine pumice gravels and sands have been stranded since early 1965. Regular surface plankton hauls in Mercury Passage, east Tasmania, in the past two years indicated a number of influxes of the pumice into eastern Tasmanian waters. It is postulated that these influxes probably largely represent material recycled from earlier standings, although some pumice may have arrived from continuous indirect drift. As yet there is no evidence to discount the possibility of circum-Antarctic circulation of some of the pumice, before stranding

    AI Hyperrealism: Why AI Faces Are Perceived as More Real Than Human Ones

    Recent evidence shows that AI-generated faces are now indistinguishable from human faces. However, algorithms are trained disproportionately on White faces, and thus White AI faces may appear especially realistic. In Experiment 1 (N = 124 adults), alongside our reanalysis of previously published data, we showed that White AI faces are judged as human more often than actual human faces-a phenomenon we term AI hyperrealism. Paradoxically, people who made the most errors in this task were the most confident (a Dunning-Kruger effect). In Experiment 2 (N = 610 adults), we used face-space theory and participant qualitative reports to identify key facial attributes that distinguish AI from human faces but were misinterpreted by participants, leading to AI hyperrealism. However, the attributes permitted high accuracy using machine learning. These findings illustrate how psychological theory can inform understanding of AI outputs and provide direction for debiasing AI algorithms, thereby promoting the ethical use of AI

    Structure-activity relationships for analogs of the tuberculosis drug bedaquiline with the naphthalene unit replaced by bicyclic heterocycles

    Replacing the naphthalene C-unit of the anti-tuberculosis drug bedaquiline with a range of bicyclic heterocycles of widely differing lipophilicity gave analogs with a 4.5-fold range in clogP values. The biological results for these compounds indicate on average a lower clogP limit of about 5.0 in this series for retention of potent inhibitory activity (MIC90s) against M.tb in culture. Some of the compounds also showed a significant reduction in inhibition of hERG channel potassium current compared with bedaquiline, but there was no common structural feature that distinguished these

    Dietary restriction of tyrosine and phenylalanine lowers tyrosinaemia associated with nitisinone therapy of alkaptonuria.

    BACKGROUND: Alkaptonuria (AKU) is caused by homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase deficiency that leads to homogentisic acid (HGA) accumulation, ochronosis and severe osteoarthropathy. Recently, nitisinone treatment, which blocks HGA formation, has been effective in AKU patients. However, a consequence of nitisinone is elevated tyrosine that can cause keratopathy. The effect of tyrosine and phenylalanine dietary restriction was investigated in nitisinone-treated AKU mice, and in an observational study of dietary intervention in AKU patients. METHODS: Nitisinone-treated AKU mice were fed tyrosine/phenylalanine-free and phenylalanine-free diets with phenylalanine supplementation in drinking water. Tyrosine metabolites were measured pre-nitisinone, post-nitisinone, and after dietary restriction. Subsequently an observational study was undertaken in 10 patients attending the National Alkaptonuria Centre (NAC), with tyrosine >700μmol/L who had been advised to restrict dietary protein intake and where necessary, to use tyrosine/phenylalanine-free amino acid supplements. RESULTS: Elevated tyrosine (813μmol/L) was significantly reduced in nitisinone-treated AKU mice fed a tyrosine/phenylalanine-free diet in a dose responsive manner. At 3 days of restriction, tyrosine was 389.3μmol/L, 274.8μmol/L and 144.3μmol/L with decreasing phenylalanine doses. In contrast, tyrosine was not effectively reduced in mice by a phenylalanine-free diet; at 3 days tyrosine was 757.3μmol/L, 530.2μmol/L and 656.2μmol/L, with no dose response to phenylalanine supplementation. In NAC patients, tyrosine was significantly reduced (p=0.002) when restricting dietary protein alone, and when combined with tyrosine/phenylalanine-free amino acid supplementation; 4 out of 10 patients achieved tyrosine <700μmol/L. CONCLUSION: Tyrosine/phenylalanine dietary restriction significantly reduced nitisinone-induced tyrosinaemia in mice, with phenylalanine restriction alone proving ineffective. Similarly, protein restriction significantly reduced circulating tyrosine in AKU patients
