Analysis of polymorphism at site -174 G/C of interleukin-6 promoter region in multiple myeloma
It is well established that interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an essential growth factor for multiple myeloma (MM) and patients with increased IL-6 levels have a poor prognosis. In healthy subjects, the presence of the C allele at a polymorphic site (-174 G/C) of the IL-6 gene is related to low IL-6 levels. In view of the potential association of this particular polymorphism with IL-6 concentration, and the relevance of IL-6 in MM pathogenesis, the objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of IL-6 (-174 G/C) promoter polymorphism and its association with development of MM in Brazilian individuals. We investigated the prevalence of these alleles in 52 patients and 60 healthy subjects (matched by age, sex, and race) of a Brazilian population. Thirty patients were male (42.4%), 24 (46.2%) were white and the median age at diagnosis was 58.5 years (range: 28 to 84 years). To determine the IL-6 (-174 G/C) polymorphism, molecular analysis was performed by polymerase chain reaction followed by endonuclease restriction digestion. The genotype distributions observed in the group of patients were 4% CC, 42% GC and 54% GG. The C allele frequency was 0.25. These results were similar to the control group, suggesting no impact of this polymorphism on the susceptibility to MM

Small-scale solar magnetic fields
As we resolve ever smaller structures in the solar atmosphere, it has become
clear that magnetism is an important component of those small structures.
Small-scale magnetism holds the key to many poorly understood facets of solar
magnetism on all scales, such as the existence of a local dynamo, chromospheric
heating, and flux emergence, to name a few. Here, we review our knowledge of
small-scale photospheric fields, with particular emphasis on quiet-sun field,
and discuss the implications of several results obtained recently using new
instruments, as well as future prospects in this field of research.Comment: 43 pages, 18 figure
From Linear to Nonlinear Response in Spin Glasses: Importance of Mean-Field-Theory Predictions
Deviations from spin-glass linear response in a single crystal Cu:Mn 1.5 at %
are studied for a wide range of changes in magnetic field, . Three
quantities, the difference , the effective waiting time,
, and the difference are examined in our
analysis. Three regimes of spin-glass behavior are observed as
increases. Lines in the plane, corresponding to ``weak'' and
``strong'' violations of linear response under a change in magnetic field, are
shown to have the same functional form as the de Almeida-Thouless critical
line. Our results demonstrate the existence of a fundamental link between
static and dynamic properties of spin glasses, predicted by the mean-field
theory of aging phenomena.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Phyllosticta citricarpa and sister species of global importance to Citrus.
Several Phyllosticta species are known as pathogens of Citrus spp., and are responsible for various disease symptoms including leaf and fruit spots. One of the most important species is P. citricarpa, which causes a foliar and fruit disease called citrus black spot. The Phyllosticta species occurring on citrus can most effectively be distinguished from P. citricarpa by means of multilocus DNA sequence data. Recent studies also demonstrated P. citricarpa to be heterothallic, and reported successful mating in the laboratory. Since the domestication of citrus, different clones of P. citricarpa have escaped Asia to other continents via trade routes, with obvious disease management consequences. This pathogen profile represents a comprehensive literature review of this pathogen and allied taxa associated with citrus, focusing on identification, distribution, genomics, epidemiology and disease management. This review also considers the knowledge emerging from seven genomes of Phyllosticta spp., demonstrating unknown aspects of these species, including their mating behaviour.TaxonomyPhyllosticta citricarpa (McAlpine) Aa, 1973.
Multiwavelength studies of MHD waves in the solar chromosphere: An overview of recent results
The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the
relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and
corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the
chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region
and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from
state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of
disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through
the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in
magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly
investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric
and coronal heating. Here, we review the recent progress made in
characterising, categorising and interpreting oscillations manifesting in the
solar chromosphere, with an impetus placed on their intrinsic energetics.Comment: 48 pages, 25 figures, accepted into Space Science Review
The influence of culture on entrepreneurial intentions: a Nigerian university graduates’ perspective
Culture influences entrepreneurship and it is becoming essential to determine its role in entrepreneurship development in different countries especially in those with cultural diversities like Nigeria where there are less studies. Nigeria included a compulsory variant of entrepreneurship education in the curriculum of universities to nurture entrepreneurial mind-sets. Despite the general recognition of the instrumentality and significance of entrepreneurship, there are no studies evaluating the programme or the role of culture in entrepreneurial intention development. This study applied an extended version of the theory of planned behaviour to examine the interaction between culture and entrepreneurship how this impact on the entrepreneurial intentions of graduates. This article analysed and reported results of the survey of 409 graduates from six universities using structural equation modelling-AMOS, analysis of moment structures. Findings indicate that culture has both direct and indirect effect on graduates’ entrepreneurial intentions. The study has implications for policy and practice
