Implication of Sialidases in Salmonella Infection: Genome Release of Sialidase Knockout Strains from Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium LT2.
Sialidases, which are widely distributed in nature, cleave the α-ketosidic bond of terminal sialic acid residue. These emerging virulence factors degrade the host glycan. We report here the release of seven sialidase and one sialic acid transporter deletion in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strain LT2, which are important in cellular invasion during infection
High-Speed Projects in the United States: Identifying the Elements for Success-Part 1, MTI Report 05-01
For almost half a century, high-speed ground transportation (HSGT) has held the promise of fast, convenient, and environmentally sound travel for distances between 40 and 600 miles. While a number of HSGT systems have been developed and deployed in Asia and Europe, none has come close to being implemented in the United States. Yet this is not for lack of trying. There have been several efforts around the country, most of which have failed, some of which are still in the early stages, and a few of which might come to pass.
The goal of this study was to identify lessons learned for successfully developing and implementing high-speed rail (HSR) in the United States. Through a broad literature review, interviews, and three specific case studies—Florida, California, and the Pacific Northwest—this study articulates those lessons and presents themes for future consideration
β-diketonate versus β-ketoiminate:the importance of a ferrocenyl moiety on improving the anticancer potency
Herein we present a library of fully characterized beta-diketonate and beta-ketoiminate compounds that are functionalized with a ferrocenyl moiety. Their cytotoxic potential has been determined by screening against human breast adenocarcinomas (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231), human colorectal carcinoma p53 wild type (HCT116 p53(+/+)) and normal human prostate (PNT2) cell lines. The ferrocenyl beta-diketonate compounds are more than 18 times more cytotoxic than the ferrocenyl beta-ketoiminate analogues. Against MCF-7, compounds functionalized at the meta position are up to nine times more cytotoxic than when functionalized at the para position. The ferrocenyl beta-diketonate compounds have increased selectivity towards MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, with several complexes having selectivity index (SI) values that are more than nine times (MCF-7) and more than six times (MDA-MB-231) that of carboplatin. The stability of these compounds in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylformamide (DMF) has been assessed by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry studies, and the compounds show no oxidation of the iron center from Fe-II to Fe-III. Cytotoxicity screening was performed in both DMSO and DMF, with no significant differences observedin their potency
Draft Genome Sequence of Multidrug-Resistant Abortive Campylobacter jejuni from Northern California.
Campylobacter jejuni is an enteric bacterium that can cause abortion in livestock. This is the release of a multidrug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni genome from an isolate that caused an abortion in a cow in northern California. This isolate is part of the 100K Pathogen Genome Project

Shigella Draft Genome Sequences: Resources for Food Safety and Public Health.
Shigella is a major foodborne pathogen that infects humans and nonhuman primates and is the major cause of dysentery and reactive arthritis worldwide. This is the initial public release of 16 Shigella genome sequences from four species sequenced as part of the 100K Pathogen Genome Project
Swarm-Oscillators
Nonlinear coupling between inter- and intra-element dynamics appears as a
collective behaviour of elements. The elements in this paper denote symptoms
such as a bacterium having an internal network of genes and proteins, a
reactive droplet, a neuron in networks, etc. In order to elucidate the
capability of such systems, a simple and reasonable model is derived. This
model exhibits the rich patterns of systems such as cell membrane, cell fusion,
cell growing, cell division, firework, branch, and clustered clusters
(self-organized hierarchical structure, modular network). This model is
extremely simple yet powerful; therefore, it is expected to impact several
disciplines.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Striped Magnetic Ground State of the Kagome Lattice in Fe4Si2Sn7O16
We have experimentally identified a new magnetic ground state for the kagome
lattice, in the perfectly hexagonal Fe2+ (3d6, S = 2) compound Fe4Si2Sn7O16.
Representational symmetry analysis of neutron diffraction data shows that below
T_N = 3.5 K, the spins on 2/3 of the magnetic ions order into canted
antiferromagnetic chains, separated by the remaining 1/3 which are
geometrically frustrated and show no long-range order down to at least T = 0.1
K. Moessbauer spectroscopy confirms that there is no static order on the latter
1/3 of the magnetic ions - i.e., they are in a liquid-like rather than a frozen
state - down to at least 1.65 K. A heavily Mn-doped sample
Fe1.45Mn2.55Si2Sn7O16 has the same magnetic structure. Although the propagation
vector q = (0, 1/2 , 1/2 ) breaks hexagonal symmetry, we see no evidence for
magnetostriction in the form of a lattice distortion within the resolution of
our data. We discuss the relationship to partially frustrated magnetic order on
the pyrochlore lattice of Gd2Ti2O7, and to theoretical models that predict
symmetry breaking ground states for perfect kagome lattices.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
