    An assessment of indirect evaporative cooling as an energy efficient and cost effective method of air conditioning with energy recovery

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.Indirect evaporative cooling (lEC) exhibits favourable potential for energy recovery when operated on its own or when it is integrated with a vapour compression system to form a hybrid system. However, very few systematic and holistic design approaches have been carried out to analyse its strengths and weaknesses relative to other available technologies. This thesis reports research on developing a novel low energy air conditioning system in which an indirect evaporative cooling unit in the form of a polymer plate cross-flow heat exchanger is integrated with a vapour compression system or a chilled water coil. Two design approaches are taken, one after the other. In the first approach the thermal aspect of this particular heat exchanger is described (Chapters 1 to 3). A model for basic effectiveness is developed from the physical principles involving energy balance, use of moist air properties and a psychrometric chart. This new development explains the sensitivity of effective operating conditions and the link between sensible heat ratio and flow ratio. In the second part of this thesis, (chapter 4 to 7) a functional design approach is employed that considers criteria which are common to air conditioning system design and product development. For the DICER system, technology assessment and the original case study for ventilation air pre-treatment are described. This part of the thesis also describes life cycle costing, materials, manufacturing and the influence of volume production on cost along with a case study. When considering manufacturing or fabrication on a larger scale a simple tool using geometrical relations of the mould size, shape and material specifications is used to estimate the material quantity for large scale production. This is illustrated with a specific model of heat exchanger housing and considering fibreglass as a preferred material for fabrication. An economic evaluation is carried out based on the material requirements for existing manufacturing and proposed manufacturing method. Cost reduction opportunity is presented using optimised batch quantity. This cost reduction is then extended to other models of the heat exchanger housing and compared with existing manufacturing methods. This total approach of combining thermal science with materials, production and engineering design activity identifies the strengths, weaknesses and suitability of this method of air conditioning for commercial exploitation. The research conducted by this approach has provided valuable insights and understanding of the technology as well as its merits and limitations when compared with existing commercial products such as vapour compression systems. A life cycle cost (LCC) analysis method is developed based on the operating cost, initial cost, performance and discount rate over future time for the economic lifetime of the product. This model compares the life cycle cost of a particular design or product when evaluating several energy recovery options. This costing tool will aid design engineers to establish a balance between performance and cost. Alternatives with different design, performance and initial costs are assessed and analysed for operating life, taking replacement within the comparison period into account. The key contributions of the work described in this thesis are: 1. A simplified effectiveness mode] based on sensible heat ratio and using a psychrometric chart which explains sensitivity of effectiveness when considering dry and wet surface heat transfer. 2. The case study involving ventilation air pre-treatment in a commercial building using the DICER method of energy recovery, where the cross-flow polymer plate heat exchanger is integrated with the chilled water coils supplied from the main plant. 3. Qualifications to the benefits of this method of ventilation air pre-treatment for peak demand reduction as well as annual energy conservation combined with site evaluation for potential application in retrofit operation. 4. Guidelines are developed based on the knowledge gained throughout the case study which will aid similar future designs. 5. Technology assessment is carried out to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the DICER system for its next stage of design optimisation. 6. A simplified quantity estimation technique is presented using the geometric relation of mould shape; size and material specification. Optimum batch quantities are presented for the existing and recommended method of manufacturing for further cost optimisation

    Cytochrome c Reduction by H2S Potentiates Sulfide Signaling.

The final version is available from American Chemical Society via the DOI in this record.Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenously produced gas that is toxic at high concentrations. It is eliminated by a dedicated mitochondrial sulfide oxidation pathway, which connects to the electron transfer chain at the level of complex III. Direct reduction of cytochrome c (Cyt C) by H2S has been reported previously but not characterized. In this study, we demonstrate that reduction of ferric Cyt C by H2S exhibits hysteretic behavior, which suggests the involvement of reactive sulfur species in the reduction process and is consistent with a reaction stoichiometry of 1.5 mol of Cyt C reduced/mol of H2S oxidized. H2S increases O2 consumption by human cells (HT29 and HepG2) treated with the complex III inhibitor antimycin A, which is consistent with the entry of sulfide-derived electrons at the level of complex IV. Cyt C-dependent H2S oxidation stimulated protein persulfidation in vitro, while silencing of Cyt C expression decreased mitochondrial protein persulfidation in a cell culture. Cyt C released during apoptosis was correlated with persulfidation of procaspase 9 and with loss of its activity.     Impacts of Climate Change on indirect human exposure to pathogens and chemicals from agriculture

    Objective: Climate change is likely to affect the nature of pathogens and chemicals in the environment and their fate and transport. Future risks of pathogens and chemicals could therefore be very different from those of today. In this review, we assess the implications of climate change for changes in human exposures to pathogens and chemicals in agricultural systems in the United Kingdom and discuss the subsequent effects on health impacts. Data sources: In this review, we used expert input and considered literature on climate change ; health effects resulting from exposure to pathogens and chemicals arising from agriculture ; inputs of chemicals and pathogens to agricultural systems ; and human exposure pathways for pathogens and chemicals in agricultural systems. Data synthesis: We established the current evidence base for health effects of chemicals and pathogens in the agricultural environment ; determined the potential implications of climate change on chemical and pathogen inputs in agricultural systems ; and explored the effects of climate change on environmental transport and fate of different contaminant types. We combined these data to assess the implications of climate change in terms of indirect human exposure to pathogens and chemicals in agricultural systems. We then developed recommendations on future research and policy changes to manage any adverse increases in risks. Conclusions: Overall, climate change is likely to increase human exposures to agricultural contaminants. The magnitude of the increases will be highly dependent on the contaminant type. Risks from many pathogens and particulate and particle-associated contaminants could increase significantly. These increases in exposure can, however, be managed for the most part through targeted research and policy changes

    Characterization of magnesium requirement of human 5'-tyrosyl DNA phosphodiesterase mediated reaction

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Topo-poisons can produce an enzyme-DNA complex linked by a 3'- or 5'-phosphotyrosyl covalent bond. 3'-phosphotyrosyl bonds can be repaired by tyrosyl DNA phosphodiesterase-1 (TDP1), an enzyme known for years, but a complementary human enzyme 5'-tyrosyl DNA phosphodiesterase (hTDP2) that cleaves 5'-phosphotyrosyl bonds has been reported only recently. Although hTDP2 possesses both 3'- and 5'- tyrosyl DNA phosphodiesterase activity, the role of Mg<sup>2+ </sup>in its activity was not studied in sufficient details.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study we showed that purified hTDP2 does not exhibit any 5'-phosphotyrosyl phosphodiesterase activity in the absence of Mg<sup>2+</sup>/Mn<sup>2+</sup>, and that neither Zn<sup>2+ </sup>or nor Ca<sup>2+ </sup>can activate hTDP2. Mg<sup>2+ </sup>also controls 3'-phosphotyrosyl activity of TDP2. In MCF-7 cell extracts and de-yolked zebrafish embryo extracts, Mg<sup>2+ </sup>controlled 5'-phosphotyrosyl activity. This study also showed that there is an optimal Mg<sup>2+ </sup>concentration above which it is inhibitory for hTDP2 activity.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results altogether reveal the optimal Mg<sup>2+ </sup>requirement in hTDP2 mediated reaction.</p

    Step-by-step design of proteins for small molecule interaction: a review on recent milestones

    Protein design is the field of synthetic biology that aims at developing de-novo custom made proteins and peptides for specific applications. Despite exploring an ambitious goal, recent computational advances in both hardware and software technologies have paved the way to high-throughput screening and detailed design of novel folds and improved functionalities. Modern advances in the field of protein design for small molecule targeting are described in this review, organized in a step-by-step fashion: from the conception of a new or upgraded active binding site, to scaffold design, sequence optimization and experimental expression of the custom protein. In each step, contemporary examples are described, and state-of-the art software is briefly explored.publishe

    The Newcomb-Benford Law in Its Relation to Some Common Distributions

    An often reported, but nevertheless persistently striking observation, formalized as the Newcomb-Benford law (NBL), is that the frequencies with which the leading digits of numbers occur in a large variety of data are far away from being uniform. Most spectacular seems to be the fact that in many data the leading digit 1 occurs in nearly one third of all cases. Explanations for this uneven distribution of the leading digits were, among others, scale- and base-invariance. Little attention, however, found the interrelation between the distribution of the significant digits and the distribution of the observed variable. It is shown here by simulation that long right-tailed distributions of a random variable are compatible with the NBL, and that for distributions of the ratio of two random variables the fit generally improves. Distributions not putting most mass on small values of the random variable (e.g. symmetric distributions) fail to fit. Hence, the validity of the NBL needs the predominance of small values and, when thinking of real-world data, a majority of small entities. Analyses of data on stock prices, the areas and numbers of inhabitants of countries, and the starting page numbers of papers from a bibliography sustain this conclusion. In all, these findings may help to understand the mechanisms behind the NBL and the conditions needed for its validity. That this law is not only of scientific interest per se, but that, in addition, it has also substantial implications can be seen from those fields where it was suggested to be put into practice. These fields reach from the detection of irregularities in data (e.g. economic fraud) to optimizing the architecture of computers regarding number representation, storage, and round-off errors

    Effect of Body Mass Index on work related musculoskeletal discomfort and occupational stress of computer workers in a developed ergonomic setup

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Work urgency, accuracy and demands compel the computer professionals to spend longer hours before computers without giving importance to their health, especially body weight. Increase of body weight leads to improper Body Mass Index (BMI) may aggravate work related musculoskeletal discomfort and occupational-psychosocial stress. The objective of the study was to find out the effect of BMI on work related musculoskeletal discomforts and occupational stress of computer workers in a developed ergonomic setup.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A descriptive inferential study has been taken to analyze the effect of BMI on work related musculoskeletal discomfort and occupational-psychosocial stress. A total of 100 computer workers, aged 25-35 years randomly selected on convenience from software and BPO companies in Bangalore city, India for the participation in this study. BMI was calculated by taking the ratio of the subject's height (in meter) and weight (in kilogram). Work related musculoskeletal discomfort and occupational stress of the subjects was assessed by Cornell University's musculoskeletal discomfort questionnaire (CMDQ) and occupational stress index (OSI) respectively as well as a relationship was checked with their BMI.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A significant association (p < 0.001) was seen among high BMI subjects with their increase scores of musculoskeletal discomfort and occupational stress.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>From this study, it has been concluded that, there is a significant effect of BMI in increasing of work related musculoskeletal discomfort and occupational-psychosocial stress among computer workers in a developed ergonomic setup.</p

    The economic burden of HIV/AIDS on individuals and households in Nepal: a quantitative study.

    BACKGROUND: There have been only limited studies assessing the economic burden of HIV/AIDS in terms of direct costs, and there has been no published study related to productivity costs in Nepal. Therefore, this study explores in detail the economic burden of HIV/AIDS, including direct costs and productivity costs. This paper focuses on the direct costs of seeking treatment, productivity costs, and related factors affecting direct costs, and productivity costs. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional, quantitative study. The primary data were collected through a structured face-to-face survey from 415 people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV). The study was conducted in six representative treatment centres of six districts of Nepal. The data analysis regarding the economic burden (direct costs and productivity costs) was performed from the household's perspective. Descriptive statistics have been used, and regression analyses were applied to examine the extent, nature and determinants of the burden of the disease, and its correlations. RESULTS: Average total costs due to HIV/AIDS (the sum of average total direct and average productivity costs before adjustment for coping strategies) were Nepalese Rupees (NRs) 2233 per month (US30.2/month),whichwas28.5 30.2/month), which was 28.5% of the sample households' average monthly income. The average total direct costs for seeking HIV/AIDS treatment were NRs 1512 (US 20.4), and average productivity costs (before adjustment for coping strategies) were NRs 721 (US$ 9.7). The average monthly productivity losses (before adjustment for coping strategies) were 5.05 days per person. The major determinants for the direct costs were household income, occupation, health status of respondents, respondents accompanied or not, and study district. Health status of respondents, ethnicity, sexual orientation and study district were important determinants for productivity costs. CONCLUSIONS: The study concluded that HIV/AIDS has caused a significant economic burden for PLHIV and their families in Nepal. The study has a number of policy implications for different stakeholders. Provision of social support and income generating programmes to HIV-affected individuals and their families, and decentralising treatment services in each district seem to be viable solutions to reduce the economic burden of HIV-affected individuals and households

    Lattice Boltzmann simulations of soft matter systems

    This article concerns numerical simulations of the dynamics of particles immersed in a continuum solvent. As prototypical systems, we consider colloidal dispersions of spherical particles and solutions of uncharged polymers. After a brief explanation of the concept of hydrodynamic interactions, we give a general overview over the various simulation methods that have been developed to cope with the resulting computational problems. We then focus on the approach we have developed, which couples a system of particles to a lattice Boltzmann model representing the solvent degrees of freedom. The standard D3Q19 lattice Boltzmann model is derived and explained in depth, followed by a detailed discussion of complementary methods for the coupling of solvent and solute. Colloidal dispersions are best described in terms of extended particles with appropriate boundary conditions at the surfaces, while particles with internal degrees of freedom are easier to simulate as an arrangement of mass points with frictional coupling to the solvent. In both cases, particular care has been taken to simulate thermal fluctuations in a consistent way. The usefulness of this methodology is illustrated by studies from our own research, where the dynamics of colloidal and polymeric systems has been investigated in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations.Comment: Review article, submitted to Advances in Polymer Science. 16 figures, 76 page
