Unexpected drop of dynamical heterogeneities in colloidal suspensions approaching the jamming transition
As the glass (in molecular fluids\cite{Donth}) or the jamming (in colloids
and grains\cite{LiuNature1998}) transitions are approached, the dynamics slow
down dramatically with no marked structural changes. Dynamical heterogeneity
(DH) plays a crucial role: structural relaxation occurs through correlated
rearrangements of particle ``blobs'' of size
\cite{WeeksScience2000,DauchotPRL2005,Glotzer,Ediger}. On approaching
these transitions, grows in glass-formers\cite{Glotzer,Ediger},
colloids\cite{WeeksScience2000,BerthierScience2005}, and driven granular
materials\cite{KeysNaturePhys2007} alike, strengthening the analogies between
the glass and the jamming transitions. However, little is known yet on the
behavior of DH very close to dynamical arrest. Here, we measure in colloids the
maximum of a ``dynamical susceptibility'', , whose growth is usually
associated to that of \cite{LacevicPRE}. initially increases with
volume fraction , as in\cite{KeysNaturePhys2007}, but strikingly drops
dramatically very close to jamming. We show that this unexpected behavior
results from the competition between the growth of and the reduced
particle displacements associated with rearrangements in very dense

Fixed points and amenability in non-positive curvature
Consider a proper cocompact CAT(0) space X. We give a complete algebraic
characterisation of amenable groups of isometries of X. For amenable discrete
subgroups, an even narrower description is derived, implying Q-linearity in the
torsion-free case.
We establish Levi decompositions for stabilisers of points at infinity of X,
generalising the case of linear algebraic groups to Is(X). A geometric
counterpart of this sheds light on the refined bordification of X (\`a la
Karpelevich) and leads to a converse to the Adams-Ballmann theorem. It is
further deduced that unimodular cocompact groups cannot fix any point at
infinity except in the Euclidean factor; this fact is needed for the study of
CAT(0) lattices.

Epidemics on contact networks: a general stochastic approach
Dynamics on networks is considered from the perspective of Markov stochastic
processes. We partially describe the state of the system through network motifs
and infer any missing data using the available information. This versatile
approach is especially well adapted for modelling spreading processes and/or
population dynamics. In particular, the generality of our systematic framework
and the fact that its assumptions are explicitly stated suggests that it could
be used as a common ground for comparing existing epidemics models too complex
for direct comparison, such as agent-based computer simulations. We provide
many examples for the special cases of susceptible-infectious-susceptible (SIS)
and susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) dynamics (e.g., epidemics propagation)
and we observe multiple situations where accurate results may be obtained at
low computational cost. Our perspective reveals a subtle balance between the

A systematic variation of the stellar initial mass function in early-type galaxies
Much of our knowledge of galaxies comes from analysing the radiation emitted
by their stars. It depends on the stellar initial mass function (IMF)
describing the distribution of stellar masses when the population formed.
Consequently knowledge of the IMF is critical to virtually every aspect of
galaxy evolution. More than half a century after the first IMF determination,
no consensus has emerged on whether it is universal in different galaxies.
Previous studies indicated that the IMF and the dark matter fraction in galaxy
centres cannot be both universal, but they could not break the degeneracy
between the two effects. Only recently indications were found that massive
elliptical galaxies may not have the same IMF as our Milky Way. Here we report
unambiguous evidence for a strong systematic variation of the IMF in early-type
galaxies as a function of their stellar mass-to-light ratio, producing
differences up to a factor of three in mass. This was inferred from detailed
dynamical models of the two-dimensional stellar kinematics for the large
Atlas3D representative sample of nearby early-type galaxies spanning two orders
of magnitude in stellar mass. Our finding indicates that the IMF depends

The Long Life of Birds: The Rat-Pigeon Comparison Revisited
The most studied comparison of aging and maximum lifespan potential (MLSP) among endotherms involves the 7-fold longevity difference between rats (MLSP 5y) and pigeons (MLSP 35y). A widely accepted theory explaining MLSP differences between species is the oxidative stress theory, which purports that reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during mitochondrial respiration damage bio-molecules and eventually lead to the breakdown of regulatory systems and consequent death. Previous rat-pigeon studies compared only aspects of the oxidative stress theory and most concluded that the lower mitochondrial superoxide production of pigeons compared to rats was responsible for their much greater longevity. This conclusion is based mainly on data from one tissue (the heart) using one mitochondrial substrate (succinate). Studies on heart mitochondria using pyruvate as a mitochondrial substrate gave contradictory results. We believe the conclusion that birds produce less mitochondrial superoxide than mammals is unwarranted
Toward unsupervised outbreak detection through visual perception of new patterns
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Statistical algorithms are routinely used to detect outbreaks of well-defined syndromes, such as influenza-like illness. These methods cannot be applied to the detection of emerging diseases for which no preexisting information is available.</p> <p>This paper presents a method aimed at facilitating the detection of outbreaks, when there is no a priori knowledge of the clinical presentation of cases.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The method uses a visual representation of the symptoms and diseases coded during a patient consultation according to the International Classification of Primary Care 2<sup>nd </sup>version (ICPC-2). The surveillance data are transformed into color-coded cells, ranging from white to red, reflecting the increasing frequency of observed signs. They are placed in a graphic reference frame mimicking body anatomy. Simple visual observation of color-change patterns over time, concerning a single code or a combination of codes, enables detection in the setting of interest.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The method is demonstrated through retrospective analyses of two data sets: description of the patients referred to the hospital by their general practitioners (GPs) participating in the French Sentinel Network and description of patients directly consulting at a hospital emergency department (HED).</p> <p>Informative image color-change alert patterns emerged in both cases: the health consequences of the August 2003 heat wave were visualized with GPs' data (but passed unnoticed with conventional surveillance systems), and the flu epidemics, which are routinely detected by standard statistical techniques, were recognized visually with HED data.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Using human visual pattern-recognition capacities to detect the onset of unexpected health events implies a convenient image representation of epidemiological surveillance and well-trained "epidemiology watchers". Once these two conditions are met, one could imagine that the epidemiology watchers could signal epidemiological alerts, based on "image walls" presenting the local, regional and/or national surveillance patterns, with specialized field epidemiologists assigned to validate the signals detected.</p
Relevance of large litter bag burial for the study of leaf breakdown in the hyporheic zone
Particulate organic matter is the major source of energy for most low-order streams, but a large part of this litter is buried within bed sediment during floods and thus become poorly available for benthic food webs. The fate of this buried litter is little studied. In most cases, measures of breakdown rates consist of burying a known mass of litter within the stream sediment and following its breakdown over time. We tested this method using large litter bags (15 x 15 cm) and two field experiments. First, we used litter large bags filled with Alnus glutinosa leaves (buried at 20 cm depth with a shovel) in six stations within different land-use contexts and with different sediment grain sizes. Breakdown rates were surprisingly high (0.0011–0.0188 day-1) and neither correlate with most of the physico-chemical characteristics measured in the interstitial habitats nor with the land-use around the stream. In contrast, the rates were negatively correlated with a decrease in oxygen concentrations between surface and buried bags and positively correlated with both the percentage of coarse particles (20–40 mm) in the sediment and benthic macro-invertebrate richness. These results suggest that the vertical exchanges with surface water in the hyporheic zone play a crucial role in litter breakdown. Second, an experimental modification of local sediment (removing fine particles with a shovel to increase vertical exchanges) highlighted the influence of grain size on water and oxygen exchanges, but had no effect on hyporheic breakdown rates. Burying large litter bags within sediments may thus not be a relevant method, especially in clogged conditions, due to changes induced through the burial process in the vertical connectivity between surface and interstitial habitats that modify organic matter processing
Definition of the σW regulon of Bacillus subtilis in the absence of stress
Bacteria employ extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factors for their responses to environmental stresses. Despite intensive research, the molecular dissection of ECF sigma factor regulons has remained a major challenge due to overlaps in the ECF sigma factor-regulated genes and the stimuli that activate the different ECF sigma factors. Here we have employed tiling arrays to single out the ECF σW regulon of the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis from the overlapping ECF σX, σY, and σM regulons. For this purpose, we profiled the transcriptome of a B. subtilis sigW mutant under non-stress conditions to select candidate genes that are strictly σW-regulated. Under these conditions, σW exhibits a basal level of activity. Subsequently, we verified the σW-dependency of candidate genes by comparing their transcript profiles to transcriptome data obtained with the parental B. subtilis strain 168 grown under 104 different conditions, including relevant stress conditions, such as salt shock. In addition, we investigated the transcriptomes of rasP or prsW mutant strains that lack the proteases involved in the degradation of the σW anti-sigma factor RsiW and subsequent activation of the σW-regulon. Taken together, our studies identify 89 genes as being strictly σW-regulated, including several genes for non-coding RNAs. The effects of rasP or prsW mutations on the expression of σW-dependent genes were relatively mild, which implies that σW-dependent transcription under non-stress conditions is not strictly related to RasP and PrsW. Lastly, we show that the pleiotropic phenotype of rasP mutant cells, which have defects in competence development, protein secretion and membrane protein production, is not mirrored in the transcript profile of these cells. This implies that RasP is not only important for transcriptional regulation via σW, but that this membrane protease also exerts other important post-transcriptional regulatory functions
