Reviewable Automated Decision-Making: A Framework for Accountable Algorithmic Systems
This paper introduces reviewability as a framework for improving the
accountability of automated and algorithmic decision-making (ADM) involving
machine learning. We draw on an understanding of ADM as a socio-technical
process involving both human and technical elements, beginning before a
decision is made and extending beyond the decision itself. While explanations
and other model-centric mechanisms may assist some accountability concerns,
they often provide insufficient information of these broader ADM processes for
regulatory oversight and assessments of legal compliance. Reviewability
involves breaking down the ADM process into technical and organisational
elements to provide a systematic framework for determining the contextually
appropriate record-keeping mechanisms to facilitate meaningful review - both of
individual decisions and of the process as a whole. We argue that a
reviewability framework, drawing on administrative law's approach to reviewing
human decision-making, offers a practical way forward towards more a more
holistic and legally-relevant form of accountability for ADM
Identification of H3K4me1-associated proteins at mammalian enhancers.
Enhancers act to regulate cell-type-specific gene expression by facilitating the transcription of target genes. In mammalian cells, active or primed enhancers are commonly marked by monomethylation of histone H3 at lysine 4 (H3K4me1) in a cell-type-specific manner. Whether and how this histone modification regulates enhancer-dependent transcription programs in mammals is unclear. In this study, we conducted SILAC mass spectrometry experiments with mononucleosomes and identified multiple H3K4me1-associated proteins, including many involved in chromatin remodeling. We demonstrate that H3K4me1 augments association of the chromatin-remodeling complex BAF to enhancers in vivo and that, in vitro, H3K4me1-marked nucleosomes are more efficiently remodeled by the BAF complex. Crystal structures of the BAF component BAF45C indicate that monomethylation, but not trimethylation, is accommodated by BAF45C's H3K4-binding site. Our results suggest that H3K4me1 has an active role at enhancers by facilitating binding of the BAF complex and possibly other chromatin regulators
Do South Asian women with PCOS have poorer health-related quality of life than Caucasian women with PCOS? A comparative cross-sectional study.
BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common chronic endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. This study aimed to compare the HRQoL of South Asian and white Caucasian women with PCOS, given that it is particularly common among women of South Asian origin and they have been shown to have more severe symptoms. METHODS: The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Questionnaire (PCOSQ) and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) were administered in a cross-sectional survey to 42 South Asian and 129 Caucasian women diagnosed with PCOS recruited from the gynaecology outpatient clinics of two university teaching hospitals in Sheffield and Leeds. Additional clinical data was abstracted from medical notes. Normative data, collected as part of the Oxford Health and Lifestyles II survey, was obtained to compare SF-36 results with ethnically matched women from the general UK population. Using the SF-36, normative HRQoL scores for women of South Asian origin were lower than for Caucasian women. Given this lower baseline we tested whether the same relationship holds true among those with PCOS. RESULTS: Although HRQoL scores for women with PCOS were lower than normative data for both groups, South Asian women with PCOS did not have poorer HRQoL than their Caucasian counterparts. For both the SF-36 and PCOSQ, mean scores were broadly the same for both Asian and Caucasian women. For both groups, the worst two HRQoL domains as measured on the PCOSQ were 'infertility' and 'weight', with respective scores of 35.3 and 42.3 for Asian women with PCOS compared to 38.6 and 35.4 for Caucasian women with PCOS. The highest scoring domain for South Asian women with PCOS was 'menstrual problems' (55.3), indicating best health, and was the only statistically significant difference from Caucasian women (p = 0.01). On the SF-36, the lowest scoring domain was 'Energy & Vitality' for Caucasian women with PCOS, but this was significantly higher for Asian women with PCOS (p = 0.01). The best health status for both groups was 'physical functioning', although this was significantly lower for South Asian women with PCOS (p = 0.005). Interestingly, only two domains differed significantly from the normative data for the Asian women with PCOS, while seven domains were significantly different for the Caucasian women with PCOS compared to their normative counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: The HRQoL differences that exist between South Asian and Caucasian women in the general population do not appear to be replicated amongst women with PCOS. PCOS reduces HRQoL to broadly similar levels, regardless of ethnicity and differences in the normative baseline HRQoL of these groups
A Case of Extensive Spinal Cysticercosis Involving the Whole Spinal Canal in a Patient with a History of Cerebral Cysticercosis
Although cysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease affecting the central nervous system, spinal cysticercosis is rare. A rare form of spinal cysticercosis involving the whole spinal canal is presented. A 45-year-old Korean male had a history of intracranial cysticercosis and showed progressive paraparesis. Spinal magnetic resonance scan showed multiple cysts compressing the spinal cord from C1 to L1. Three different levels (C1-2, T1-3, and T11-L1) required operation. Histopathological examination confirmed cysticercosis. The patient improved markedly after surgery
Top 10 Dietary Supplements of Korean Adults from the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence, types, and trends of dietary supplement (DS) use. We analyzed the Dietary Supplement Questionnaire data of Korean aged 19 years old or older from the Nutrition Survey of the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey. Each reported DS was coded based on ingredients according to the 2010 Korean Food and Drug Administration Notification. The prevalence (standard error) of current DS use was 20.6% (0.7) for men, 32.2% (0.7) for women. Those with DS use for longer than two weeks during previous one year were 27.2% (0.7), and 40.2% (0.8), for men and women respectively. Vitamin mineral supplement (221.6/103 persons) was the most frequently consumed DS in Korean adults. The trend for DS use in Korean adults is changing as well as increasing

Based on specific keywords, this investigation reviewed 146 publications using the SCOPUS, Web of Science (WoS), PUBMED, and Google Scholar databases. Results indicate that environmental deoxyribose nucleic acid (eDNA) can be pivotal for assessing and conserving ecosystems. Our review revealed that in the last 12 years (January 2008âJuly 2021), 63% of the studies based on eDNA have been reported from aquatic ecosystems, 25% from marine habitats, and 12% from terrestrial environments. Out of studies conducted in aquatic systems using the environmental DNA (eDNA) technique, 63% of the investigations have been reported from freshwater ecosystems, with an utmost focus on fish diversity (40%). Further analysis of the literature reveals that during the same period, 24% of the investigations using the environmental DNA technique were carried out on invertebrates, 8% on mammals, 7% on plants, 6% on reptiles, and 5% on birds. The results obtained clearly indicate that the environmental DNA technique has a clear-cut edge over other biodiversity monitoring methods. Furthermore, we also found that eDNA, in conjunction with different dating techniques, can provide better insight into deciphering eco-evolutionary feedback. Therefore, an attempt has been made to offer extensive information on the application of dating methods for different taxa present in diverse ecosystems. Last, we provide suggestions and elucidations on how to overcome the caveats and delineate some of the research avenues that will likely shape this field in the near future. This paper aims to identify the gaps in environmental DNA (eDNA) investigations to help researchers, ecologists, and decision-makers to develop a holistic understanding of environmental DNA (eDNA) and its utility as a palaeoenvironmental contrivance

Formalising trade-offs beyond algorithmic fairness: lessons from ethical philosophy and welfare economics
Abstract: There is growing concern that decision-making informed by machine learning (ML) algorithms may unfairly discriminate based on personal demographic attributes, such as race and gender. Scholars have responded by introducing numerous mathematical definitions of fairness to test the algorithm, many of which are in conflict with one another. However, these reductionist representations of fairness often bear little resemblance to real-life fairness considerations, which in practice are highly contextual. Moreover, fairness metrics tend to be implemented within narrow and targeted fairness toolkits for algorithm assessments that are difficult to integrate into an algorithmâs broader ethical assessment. In this paper, we derive lessons from ethical philosophy and welfare economics as they relate to the contextual factors relevant for fairness. In particular we highlight the debate around the acceptability of particular inequalities and the inextricable links between fairness, welfare and autonomy. We propose Key Ethics Indicators (KEIs) as a way towards providing a more holistic understanding of whether or not an algorithm is aligned to the decision-makerâs ethical values

Keluarga merupakan antara kumpulan pasaran terbesar dan terpenting dalam industri
pelancongan. Banyak destinasi pelancongan di pelbagai negara mensasarkan kumpulan ini
dalam aktiviti promosi produk pelancongan mereka kerana peratusan pasaran pelancongan
riadah di seluruh dunia didominasi oleh kumpulan pelancong berkeluarga iaitu sebanyak
30%. Namun, tidak semua keluarga mempunyai latar belakang dan keperluan produk atau
perkhimatan pelancongan yang sama. Kumpulan keluarga dengan anak berkeperluan khas
memerlukan perkhidmatan sokongan yang sedikit berbeza berbanding kumpulan keluarga
dengan anak tipikal. Kumpulan keluarga dengan kanak-kanak berkeperluan khas seperti
kanak-kanak mempunyai autisme perlu diberi perhatian serius memandangkan data
menunjukkan insiden kanak-kanak mempunyai autisme di dunia telah meningkat pada kadar
1 daripada 160. Secara tidak langsung, peningkatan jumlah ini boleh memberi kesan kepada
peningkatan permintaan produk dan perkhidmatan pelancongan bersifat mesra-autisme
daripada kumpulan keluarga yang bercuti bersama anak mempunyai autisme. Oleh itu, kajian
ini meneroka kemudahan mesra-autisme di sektor-sektor yang termasuk dalam kategori
produk pelancongan untuk menilai persediaan Malaysia dalam menyantuni keperluan khas
kanak-kanak mempunyai autisme ketika bercuti. Kajian ini dijalankan melalui kaedah
kualitatif melalui teknik analisa dokumen terhadap bahan tertulis dan bahan yang
digambarkan dan teknik pemerhatian secara terus bagi mengupas kemudahan mesra-autisme
yang ditawarkan di negara ini. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa kemudahan mesra-autisme di
negara ini hanya terdapat di sektor beli-belah, pengangkutan, perkhidmatan makanan dan
tarikan pelancong
The UK's Global Health Respiratory Network: Improving respiratory health of the world's poorest through research collaborations.
Respiratory disorders are responsible for considerable morbidity, health care utilisation, societal costs and approximately one in five deaths worldwide [1-4]. Yet, despite this substantial health and societal burden â which particularly affects the worldâs poorest populations and as such is a major contributor to global health inequalities â respiratory disorders have historically not received the
policy priority they warrant. For example, despite causing an estimated 1000 deaths per day, less than half of the worldâs countries collect data on asthma prevalence (http://www.globalasthmareport.org/). This
is true for both communicable and non-communicable respiratory disorders, many of which are either amenable to treatment or preventable
