Magnetic field effect on tunnel ionization of deep impurities by terahertz radiation
A suppression of tunnelling ionization of deep impurities in terahertz
frequency electric fields by a magnetic field is observed. It is shown that the
ionization probability at external magnetic field, B, oriented perpendicular to
the electric field of terahertz radiation, E, is substantially smaller than
that at B || E. The effect occurs at low temperatures and high magnetic fields
Nucleation of a sodium droplet on C60
We investigate theoretically the progressive coating of C60 by several sodium
atoms. Density functional calculations using a nonlocal functional are
performed for NaC60 and Na2C60 in various configurations. These data are used
to construct an empirical atomistic model in order to treat larger sizes in a
statistical and dynamical context. Fluctuating charges are incorporated to
account for charge transfer between sodium and carbon atoms. By performing
systematic global optimization in the size range 1<=n<=30, we find that Na_nC60
is homogeneously coated at small sizes, and that a growing droplet is formed
above n=>8. The separate effects of single ionization and thermalization are
also considered, as well as the changes due to a strong external electric
field. The present results are discussed in the light of various experimental
data.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
A Fuzzy Criticality Assessment System of Process Equipment for Optimized Maintenance Management.
yesIn modern chemical plants, it is essential to establish an effective maintenance strategy which will deliver financially driven results at optimised conditions, that is, minimum cost and time, by means of a criticality review of equipment in maintenance. In this article, a fuzzy logic-based criticality assessment system (FCAS) for the management of a local company’s equipment maintenance is introduced. This fuzzy system is shown to improve the conventional crisp criticality assessment system (CCAS). Results from case studies show that not only can the fuzzy logic-based system do what the conventional crisp system does but also it can output more criticality classifications with an improved reliability and a greater number of different ratings that account for fuzziness and individual voice of the decision-makers
Multi-gap superconductivity in a BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 film from optical measurements at terahertz frequencies
We measured the THz reflectance properties of a high quality epitaxial thin
film of the Fe-based superconductor BaFeCoAs with
T=22.5 K. The film was grown by pulsed laser deposition on a DyScO
substrate with an epitaxial SrTiO intermediate layer. The measured
spectrum, i.e. the reflectivity ratio between the superconducting and
normal state reflectance, provides clear evidence of a superconducting gap
close to 15 cm. A detailed data analysis shows that a
two-band, two-gap model is absolutely necessary to obtain a good description of
the measured spectrum. The low-energy gap results to be
well determined (=15.50.5 cm), while the value of the
high-energy gap is more uncertain (=557 cm).
Our results provide evidence of a nodeless isotropic double-gap scenario, with
the presence of two optical gaps corresponding to 2 values close
to 2 and 7.Comment: Published Versio
The Outer Tracker Detector of the HERA-B Experiment Part I: Detector
The HERA-B Outer Tracker is a large system of planar drift chambers with
about 113000 read-out channels. Its inner part has been designed to be exposed
to a particle flux of up to 2.10^5 cm^-2 s^-1, thus coping with conditions
similar to those expected for future hadron collider experiments. 13
superlayers, each consisting of two individual chambers, have been assembled
and installed in the experiment. The stereo layers inside each chamber are
composed of honeycomb drift tube modules with 5 and 10 mm diameter cells.
Chamber aging is prevented by coating the cathode foils with thin layers of
copper and gold, together with a proper drift gas choice. Longitudinal wire
segmentation is used to limit the occupancy in the most irradiated detector
regions to about 20 %. The production of 978 modules was distributed among six
different laboratories and took 15 months. For all materials in the fiducial
region of the detector good compromises of stability versus thickness were
found. A closed-loop gas system supplies the Ar/CF4/CO2 gas mixture to all
chambers. The successful operation of the HERA-B Outer Tracker shows that a
large tracker can be efficiently built and safely operated under huge radiation
load at a hadron collider.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figure
The Outer Tracker Detector of the HERA-B Experiment. Part II: Front-End Electronics
The HERA-B Outer Tracker is a large detector with 112674 drift chamber
channels. It is exposed to a particle flux of up to 2x10^5/cm^2/s thus coping
with conditions similar to those expected for the LHC experiments. The
front-end readout system, based on the ASD-8 chip and a customized TDC chip, is
designed to fulfil the requirements on low noise, high sensitivity, rate
tolerance, and high integration density. The TDC system is based on an ASIC
which digitizes the time in bins of about 0.5 ns within a total of 256 bins.
The chip also comprises a pipeline to store data from 128 events which is
required for a deadtime-free trigger and data acquisition system. We report on
the development, installation, and commissioning of the front-end electronics,
including the grounding and noise suppression schemes, and discuss its
performance in the HERA-B experiment
Electron Dynamics in NdCeCuO: Evidence for the Pseudogap State and Unconventional c-axis Response
Infrared reflectance measurements were made with light polarized along the a-
and c-axis of both superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases of electron
doped NdCeCuO. The results are compared to
characteristic features of the electromagnetic response in hole doped cuprates.
Within the CuO planes the frequency dependent scattering rate,
1/, is depressed below 650 cm; this behavior is a
hallmark of the pseudogap state. While in several hole doped compounds the
energy scales associated with the pseudogap and superconducting states are
quite close, we are able to show that in NdCeCuO
the two scales differ by more than one order of magnitude. Another feature of
the in-plane charge response is a peak in the real part of the conductivity,
, at 50-110 cm which is in sharp contrast with the
Drude-like response where is centered at . This
latter effect is similar to what is found in disordered hole doped cuprates and
is discussed in the context of carrier localization. Examination of the c-axis
conductivity gives evidence for an anomalously broad frequency range from which
the interlayer superfluid is accumulated. Compelling evidence for the pseudogap
state as well as other characteristics of the charge dynamics in
NdCeCuO signal global similarities of the cuprate
phase diagram with respect to electron and hole doping.Comment: Submitted to PR
Berlin Registry of Neuroimmunological entities (BERLimmun): protocol of a prospective observational study
BACKGROUND: Large-scale disease overarching longitudinal data are rare in the field of neuroimmunology. However, such data could aid early disease stratification, understanding disease etiology and ultimately improve treatment decisions. The Berlin Registry of Neuroimmunological Entities (BERLimmun) is a longitudinal prospective observational study, which aims to identify diagnostic, disease activity and prognostic markers and to elucidate the underlying pathobiology of neuroimmunological diseases. METHODS: BERLimmun is a single-center prospective observational study of planned 650 patients with neuroimmunological disease entity (e.g. but not confined to: multiple sclerosis, isolated syndromes, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders) and 85 healthy participants with 15 years of follow-up. The protocol comprises annual in-person visits with multimodal standardized assessments of medical history, rater-based disability staging, patient-report of lifestyle, diet, general health and disease specific symptoms, tests of motor, cognitive and visual functions, structural imaging of the neuroaxis and retina and extensive sampling of biological specimen. DISCUSSION: The BERLimmun database allows to investigate multiple key aspects of neuroimmunological diseases, such as immunological differences between diagnoses or compared to healthy participants, interrelations between findings of functional impairment and structural change, trajectories of change for different biomarkers over time and, importantly, to study determinants of the long-term disease course. BERLimmun opens an opportunity to a better understanding and distinction of neuroimmunological diseases
Search for the Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decay with the HERA-B Detector
We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay using events recorded with a dimuon trigger in
interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find
no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the
branching fraction .Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures (of which 1 double), paper to be submitted to

Measurement of the J/Psi Production Cross Section in 920 GeV/c Fixed-Target Proton-Nucleus Interactions
The mid-rapidity (dsigma_(pN)/dy at y=0) and total sigma_(pN) production
cross sections of J/Psi mesons are measured in proton-nucleus interactions.
Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV/c protons
with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The
J/Psi mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total
production cross section obtained is sigma_(pN)(J/Psi) = 663 +- 74 +- 46
nb/nucleon. In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements
