Up-regulation of the anti-inflammatory adipokine adiponectin in acute liver failure in mice
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recent reports suggest that the adipose tissue and adipokines are potent modulators of inflammation. However, there is only scarce knowledge on the functional role and regulation of endogenous adiponectin in non-fat tissues such as the liver under conditions of acute inflammation.
METHODS: In the present study, we investigated adiponectin expression in healthy murine liver tissue and under inflammatory conditions in vivo.
RESULTS: Adiponectin mRNA was readily detectable in healthy liver tissue and further increased in ConA-mediated acute liver failure. Adiponectin protein expression was mainly found in hepatic endothelial cells. In vitro adiponectin mRNA expression was detectable in several cell types, including primary hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells, stellate cells, and macrophages. Mice pretreated with adiponectin before ConA administration developed reduced hepatic injury as shown by decreased release of transaminases and reduced hepatocellular apoptotis. Of note, TNF-alpha levels were not affected by adiponectin, whereas IL-10 production was increased. Neutralisation of IL-10 diminished the protective effect of adiponectin.
CONCLUSIONS: Adiponectin expression is up-regulated in ConA-mediated acute liver failure. Therefore, adiponectin might play a role in the control and limitation of inflammation in the liver. Moreover, our data suggest a role for IL-10 in adiponectin-mediated hepatoprotection

Bailing Out the Milky Way: Variation in the Properties of Massive Dwarfs Among Galaxy-Sized Systems
Recent kinematical constraints on the internal densities of the Milky Way's
dwarf satellites have revealed a discrepancy with the subhalo populations of
simulated Galaxy-scale halos in the standard CDM model of hierarchical
structure formation. This has been dubbed the "too big to fail" problem, with
reference to the improbability of large and invisible companions existing in
the Galactic environment. In this paper, we argue that both the Milky Way
observations and simulated subhalos are consistent with the predictions of the
standard model for structure formation. Specifically, we show that there is
significant variation in the properties of subhalos among distinct host halos
of fixed mass and suggest that this can reasonably account for the deficit of
dense satellites in the Milky Way. We exploit well-tested analytic techniques
to predict the properties in a large sample of distinct host halos with a
variety of masses spanning the range expected of the Galactic halo. The
analytic model produces subhalo populations consistent with both Via Lactea II
and Aquarius, and our results suggest that natural variation in subhalo
properties suffices to explain the discrepancy between Milky Way satellite
kinematics and these numerical simulations. At least ~10% of Milky Way-sized
halos host subhalo populations for which there is no "too big to fail" problem,
even when the host halo mass is as large as M_host = 10^12.2 h^-1 M_sun.
Follow-up studies consisting of high-resolution simulations of a large number
of Milky Way-sized hosts are necessary to confirm our predictions. In the
absence of such efforts, the "too big to fail" problem does not appear to be a
significant challenge to the standard model of hierarchical formation.

Non-Markovian dynamics for an open two-level system without rotating wave approximation: Indivisibility versus backflow of information
By use of the two measures presented recently, the indivisibility and the
backflow of information, we study the non-Markovianity of the dynamics for a
two-level system interacting with a zero-temperature structured environment
without using rotating wave approximation (RWA). In the limit of weak coupling
between the system and the reservoir, and by expanding the time-convolutionless
(TCL) generator to the forth order with respect to the coupling strength, the
time-local non-Markovian master equation for the reduced state of the system is
derived. Under the secular approximation, the exact analytic solution is
obtained and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the indivisibility and
the backflow of information for the system dynamics are presented. In the more
general case, we investigate numerically the properties of the two measures for
the case of Lorentzian reservoir. Our results show the importance of the
counter-rotating terms to the short-time-scale non-Markovian behavior of the
system dynamics, further expose the relations between the two measures and
their rationality as non-Markovian measures. Finally, the complete positivity
of the dynamics of the considered system is discussed
Neutral Pions and Eta Mesons as Probes of the Hadronic Fireball in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions around 1A GeV
Chemical and thermal freeze-out of the hadronic fireball formed in symmetric
collisions of light, intermediate-mass, and heavy nuclei at beam energies
between 0.8A GeV and 2.0A GeV are discussed in terms of an equilibrated,
isospin-symmetric ideal hadron gas with grand-canonical baryon-number
conservation. For each collision system the baryochemical potential mu_B and
the chemical freeze-out temperature T_c are deduced from the inclusive neutral
pion and eta yields which are augmented by interpolated data on deuteron
production. With increasing beam energy mu_B drops from 800 MeV to 650 MeV,
while T_c rises from 55 MeV to 90 MeV. For given beam energy mu_B grows with
system size, whereas T_c remains constant. The centrality dependence of the
freeze-out parameters is weak as exemplified by the system Au+Au at 0.8A GeV.
For the highest beam energies the fraction of nucleons excited to resonance
states reaches freeze-out values of nearly 15 %, suggesting resonance densities
close to normal nuclear density at maximum compression. In contrast to the
particle yields, which convey the status at chemical freeze-out, the shapes of
the related transverse-mass spectra do reflect thermal freeze-out. The observed
thermal freeze-out temperatures T_th are equal to or slightly lower than T_c,
indicative of nearly simultaneous chemical and thermal freeze-out.Comment: 42 pages, 12 figure
Influence of Impact Parameter on Thermal Description of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at GSI/SIS
Attention is drawn to the role played by the size of the system in the
thermodynamic analysis of particle yields in relativistic heavy ion collisions
at SIS energies. This manifests itself in the non-linear dependence of K+ and
K- yields in collisions at 1 -- 2 A.GeV on the number of participants. It
is shown that this dependence can be quantitatively well described in terms of
a thermal model with a canonical strangeness conservation. The measured
particle multiplicity ratios (pi+/p, pi-/pi+, d/p, K+/pi+ and K+/K- but not
eta/pi0) in central Au-Au and Ni-Ni collisions at 0.8 -- 2.0 A.GeV are also
explained in the context of a thermal model with a common freeze-out
temperature and chemical potential. Including the concept of collective flow a
consistent picture of particle energy distributions is derived with the flow
velocity being strongly impact-parameter dependent.Comment: revtex, 20 figure
Supersymmetry reduction of N-extended supergravities in four dimensions
We consider the possible consistent truncation of N-extended supergravities
to lower N' theories. The truncation, unlike the case of N-extended rigid
theories, is non trivial and only in some cases it is sufficient just to delete
the extra N-N' gravitino multiplets. We explore different cases (starting with
N=8 down to N'\geq 2) where the reduction implies restrictions on the matter
sector. We perform a detailed analysis of the interesting case N=2 \to N=1.
This analysis finds applications in different contexts of superstring and

Peak effect and its evolution with defect structure in YBa2Cu3O7-d thin films at microwave frequencies
The vortex dynamics in YBa2Cu3O7-d thin films have been studied at microwave
frequencies. A pronounced peak in the surface resistance, Rs, is observed in
these films at frequencies of 4.88 and 9.55 GHz for magnetic fields varying
from 0.2 to 0.8 T. The peak is associated with an order-disorder transformation
of the flux line lattice as the temperature or field is increased. The
occurrence of the peak in Rs is crucially dependent on the depinning frequency,
wp and on the nature and concentration of growth defects present in these
films. Introduction of artificial defects by swift heavy ion irradiation with
200 MeV Ag ion at a fluence of 4x1010 ions/cm2 enhances wp and suppresses the
peak at 4.88 GHz but the peak at 9.55 GHz remains unaffected. A second peak at
lower temperature has also been observed at 9.55 GHz. This is related to twin
boundaries from angular dependence studies of Rs. Based on the temperature
variation of Rs, vortex phase diagrams have been constructed at 9.55 GHz.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures Submitted to Physical Review
"Plantar pro gasto": a importância do autoconsumo entre famílias de agricultores do Rio Grande do Sul.
O artigo discute a valoração e importância da produção para o autoconsumo na reprodução social das unidades familiares e caracteriza os alimentos autoconsumidos. Vale-se da pesquisa "Agricultura Familiar, Desenvolvimento Local e Pluriatividade" (UFRGS/UFPel/ CNPq-2003) que propiciou a formação de um banco de dados com informações sobre a dinâmica da agricultura familiar em quatro regiões distintas da geografia gaúcha, suas fontes e tipos de renda, entre estas o autoconsumo. Trazer este debate significa retomar um tema pouco discutido até então, e que, embora marginalizado ou considerado sem importância, desenvolve importante papel como renda não monetária, fortalece a segurança alimentar e adentra esferas da sociabilidade e identidade social. Além da introdução, apresenta-se o papel do autoconsumo na agricultura familiar, o cálculo da produção para o autoconsumo, discussão dos objetivos e resultados, e considerações finais. Os resultados demonstram que a produção para o autoconsumo é uma estratégia recorrente pelas unidades familiares e se diferencia de acordo com a dinâmica da agricultura familiar. Diferença esta expressa em valores relativos (%) e no número de estabelecimentos pertencentes a estratos diferenciados de autoconsumo, e pouco nos tipos de alimentos produzidos para este fim, observando-se uma homogeneidade dos hábitos alimentares
