Does Habitat Management for Northern Bobwhites Benefit the Red Imported Fire Ant?
Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) have caused damage to agricultural, economic, and wildlife resources since their accidental introduction. Previous studies have suggested that red imported fire ant (RIFA) mound densities are positively correlated to habitats maintained through disturbance. Prescribed burning and disking are two techniques commonly used to disturb portions of the landscape to maintain early successional habitats for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). We tested the hypothesis that prescribed burning and disking would increase RIFA mound densities. This study was conducted in Refugio County, Texas in the Texas Coastal Prairie on Loamy Prairie range sites. Red imported fire ant mound densities were different between years (F = 5.05, df = 2, P = 0.0148). However, burning and disking had no impact (F = 0.22, df = 2, P = 0.8044) on RIFA mound densities. Initially high RIFA mound densities in our study area coupled with the territoriality of predominantly monogyne (single-queen) colonies may have limited increases in RIFA mound density in response to treatments on these study sites
QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model
Within the framework of modified teleparallel gravity, we reconstruct a f(T)
model corresponding to the QCD ghost dark energy scenario. For a spatially flat
FRW universe containing only the pressureless matter, we obtain the time
evolution of the torsion scalar T (or the Hubble parameter). Then, we calculate
the effective torsion equation of state parameter of the QCD ghost f(T)-gravity
model as well as the deceleration parameter of the universe. Furthermore, we
fit the model parameters by using the latest observational data including
SNeIa, CMB and BAO data. We also check the viability of our model using a
cosmographic analysis approach. Moreover, we investigate the validity of the
generalized second law (GSL) of gravitational thermodynamics for our model.
Finally, we point out the growth rate of matter density perturbation. We
conclude that in QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model, the universe begins a matter
dominated phase and approaches a de Sitter regime at late times, as expected.
Also this model is consistent with current data, passes the cosmographic test,
satisfies the GSL and fits the data of the growth factor well as the LCDM

Operation of an optoelectronic crossbar switch containing a terabit-per-second free-space optical interconnect
The experimental operation of a terabit-per-second scale optoelectronic connection to a silicon very-large-scale-integrated circuit is described. A demonstrator system, in the form of an optoelectronic crossbar switch, has been constructed as a technology test bed. The assembly and testing of the components making up the system, including a flip-chipped InGaAs-GaAs optical interface chip, are reported. Using optical inputs to the electronic switching chip, single-channel routing of data through the system at the design rate of 250 Mb/s (without internal fan-out) was achieved. With 4000 optical inputs, this corresponds to a potential aggregate data input of a terabit per second into the single 14.6 /spl times/ 15.6 mm CMOS chip. In addition 50-Mb/s data rates were switched utilizing the full internal optical fan-out included in the system to complete the required connectivity. This simultaneous input of data across the chip corresponds to an aggregate data input of 0.2 Tb/s. The experimental system also utilized optical distribution of clock signals across the CMOS chip
Review article: MHD wave propagation near coronal null points of magnetic fields
We present a comprehensive review of MHD wave behaviour in the neighbourhood
of coronal null points: locations where the magnetic field, and hence the local
Alfven speed, is zero. The behaviour of all three MHD wave modes, i.e. the
Alfven wave and the fast and slow magnetoacoustic waves, has been investigated
in the neighbourhood of 2D, 2.5D and (to a certain extent) 3D magnetic null
points, for a variety of assumptions, configurations and geometries. In
general, it is found that the fast magnetoacoustic wave behaviour is dictated
by the Alfven-speed profile. In a plasma, the fast wave is focused
towards the null point by a refraction effect and all the wave energy, and thus
current density, accumulates close to the null point. Thus, null points will be
locations for preferential heating by fast waves. Independently, the Alfven
wave is found to propagate along magnetic fieldlines and is confined to the
fieldlines it is generated on. As the wave approaches the null point, it
spreads out due to the diverging fieldlines. Eventually, the Alfven wave
accumulates along the separatrices (in 2D) or along the spine or fan-plane (in
3D). Hence, Alfven wave energy will be preferentially dissipated at these
locations. It is clear that the magnetic field plays a fundamental role in the
propagation and properties of MHD waves in the neighbourhood of coronal null
points. This topic is a fundamental plasma process and results so far have also
lead to critical insights into reconnection, mode-coupling, quasi-periodic

Big GABA II: Water-referenced edited MR spectroscopy at 25 research sites
Accurate and reliable quantification of brain metabolites measured in vivo using 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a topic of continued interest. Aside from differences in the basic approach to quantification, the quantification of metabolite data acquired at different sites and on different platforms poses an additional methodological challenge. In this study, spectrally edited γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) MRS data were analyzed and GABA levels were quantified relative to an internal tissue water reference. Data from 284 volunteers scanned across 25 research sites were collected using GABA+ (GABA + co-edited macromolecules (MM)) and MM-suppressed GABA editing. The unsuppressed water signal from the volume of interest was acquired for concentration referencing. Whole-brain T1-weighted structural images were acquired and segmented to determine gray matter, white matter and cerebrospinal fluid voxel tissue fractions. Water-referenced GABA measurements were fully corrected for tissue-dependent signal relaxation and water visibility effects. The cohort-wide coefficient of variation was 17% for the GABA + data and 29% for the MM-suppressed GABA data. The mean within-site coefficient of variation was 10% for the GABA + data and 19% for the MM-suppressed GABA data. Vendor differences contributed 53% to the total variance in the GABA + data, while the remaining variance was attributed to site- (11%) and participant-level (36%) effects. For the MM-suppressed data, 54% of the variance was attributed to site differences, while the remaining 46% was attributed to participant differences. Results from an exploratory analysis suggested that the vendor differences were related to the unsuppressed water signal acquisition. Discounting the observed vendor-specific effects, water-referenced GABA measurements exhibit similar levels of variance to creatine-referenced GABA measurements. It is concluded that quantification using internal tissue water referencing is a viable and reliable method for the quantification of in vivo GABA levels
