Our understanding of the reproductive biology of corals from the Mexican southeastern Pacific is limited, and consequently, the role of reproduction in structuring coral communities is unclear. As a first attempt to understand the importance of sexual reproduction in structuring and maintaining of the coral communities from this region, we documented the reproductive cycles over 2 years (2003-2004) in three main reef-building corals species in the region. Pocillopora damicornis was shown to be hermaphroditic with asynchronous gamete development observed only in 2004; P. gigantea was characterized as both gonochoric and cosexually hermaphroditic. Absence of mature gametes was documented in both species, and an observation may be attributed to the 2003 El Niño Southern Oscillation event, which may have inhibited reproductive maturation via thermal stress. Porites panamensis was gonochoric with asynchronous development, and planulae were generally brooded. The presence of mature gametes and planulae in P. panamensis polyps suggests that this species is an important contributor to local and, likely, regional recruitment of this species. Further research should seek to identify important source populations for these coral recruits and document the exchange of larvae between coral populations of the Mexican Pacific. Super-Earth of 8 Mearth in a 2.2-day orbit around the K5V star K2-216
Context. Although thousands of exoplanets have been discovered to date, far fewer have been fully characterised, in particular super-Earths. The KESPRINT consortium identified K2-216 as a planetary candidate host star in the K2 space mission Campaign 8 field with a transiting super-Earth. The planet has recently been validated as well. Aims. Our aim was to confirm the detection and derive the main physical characteristics of K2-216b, including the mass. Methods. We performed a series of follow-up observations: high-resolution imaging with the FastCam camera at the TCS and the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph at Subaru, and high-resolution spectroscopy with HARPS (La Silla), HARPS-N (TNG), and FIES (NOT). The stellar spectra were analyzed with the SpecMatch-Emp and SME codes to derive the fundamental stellar properties. We analyzed the K2 light curve with the pyanet i software. The radial velocity measurements were modelled with both a Gaussian process (GP) regression and the so-called floating chunk offset (FCO) technique to simultaneously model the planetary signal and correlated noise associated with stellar activity. Results. Imaging confirms that K2-216 is a single star. Our analysis discloses that the star is a moderately active K5V star of mass 0.70 +/- 0.03 M-circle dot and radius 0.72 +/- 0.03 R-circle dot. Planet b is found to have a radius of 1.75(-0.10)(+0.17) R-circle plus and a 2.17-day orbit in agreement with previous results. We find consistent results for the planet mass from both models: M-p approximate to 7.4 +/- 2.2 M-circle plus from the GP regression and M-p approximate to 8.0 +/- 1.6 M-circle plus from the FCO technique, which implies that this planet is a super-Earth. The incident stellar flux is 248(-48)(+220) F-circle plus. Conclusions. The planet parameters put planet b in the middle of, or just below, the gap of the radius distribution of small planets. The density is consistent with a rocky composition of primarily iron and magnesium silicate. In agreement with theoretical predictions, we find that the planet is a remnant core, stripped of its atmosphere, and is one of the largest planets found that has lost its atmosphere
The human oviduct transcriptome reveals an anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, secretory and matrix-stable environment during embryo transit.
The human oviduct serves as a conduit for spermatozoa in the peri-ovulatory phase and nurtures and facilitates transport of the developing embryo for nidation during the luteal phase. Interactions between the embryo and oviductal epithelial surface proteins and secreted products during embryo transit are largely undefined. This study investigated gene expression in the human oviduct in the early luteal versus follicular phases to identify candidate genes and biomolecular processes that may participate in maturation and transport of the embryo as it traverses this tissue. Oviductal RNA was hybridized to oligonucleotide arrays and resulting data were analysed by bioinformatic approaches. There were 650 genes significantly down-regulated and 683 genes significantly up-regulated (P<0.05) in the luteal versus follicular phase. Quantitative real-time PCR, immunoblot analysis and immunohistochemistry confirmed selected gene expression and cellular protein localization. Down-regulated genes involved macrophage recruitment, immunomodulation and matrix-degeneration, and up-regulated genes involved anti-inflammatory, ion transport, anti-angiogenic and early pregnancy recognition. The oviduct displayed some similarities and differences in progesterone-regulated genes compared with the human endometrium. Together, these data suggest a unique hormonally regulated environment during embryo development, maturation and transport through human oviduct and some conservation of progesterone signalling in tissues of common embryological origin. Total RNA from human ampullary oviducts in the early luteal versus follicular phases was isolated and hybridized to oligonucleotide arrays. The data, analysed by bioinformatic approaches, revealed that 650 genes were significantly down- and 683 genes were significantly up-regulated in the luteal phase. Quantitative real-time PCR, immunoblot analysis and immunohistochemistry confirmed selected gene expression and cellular protein localization. The data demonstrated down-regulation of genes involved in macrophage recruitment, immunomodulation and matrix degeneration and up-regulation of ion transport and secretions, as well as anti-angiogenic and early pregnancy recognition. Together, these data suggest a unique hormonally regulated environment during embryo development, maturation and transport through the human oviduct and provide insight into mechanisms influencing acquisition of implantation competence of the human embryo during its passage through the oviduct en route to the uterine endometrium
