Sparticle masses in deflected mirage mediation
We discuss the sparticle mass patterns that can be realized in deflected
mirage mediation scenario of supersymmetry breaking, in which the moduli,
anomaly, and gauge mediations all contribute to the MSSM soft parameters.
Analytic expression of low energy soft parameters and also the sfermion mass
sum rules are derived, which can be used to interpret the experimentally
measured sparticle masses within the framework of the most general mixed
moduli-gauge-anomaly mediation. Phenomenological aspects of some specific
examples are also discussed.Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, references adde
Spin Analysis of Supersymmetric Particles
The spin of supersymmetric particles can be determined at colliders
unambiguously. This is demonstrated for a characteristic set of non-colored
supersymmetric particles -- smuons, selectrons, and charginos/neutralinos. The
analysis is based on the threshold behavior of the excitation curves for pair
production in collisions, the angular distribution in the production
process and decay angular distributions. In the first step we present the
observables in the helicity formalism for the supersymmetric particles.
Subsequently we confront the results with corresponding analyses of
Kaluza-Klein particles in theories of universal extra space dimensions which
behave distinctly different from supersymmetric theories. It is shown in the
third step that a set of observables can be designed which signal the spin of
supersymmetric particles unambiguously without any model assumptions. Finally
in the fourth step it is demonstrated that the determination of the spin of
supersymmetric particles can be performed experimentally in practice at an
collider.Comment: 39 pages, 14 figure
Ancilla models for quantum operations: For what unitaries does the ancilla state have to be physical?
Any evolution described by a completely positive trace-preserving linear map
can be imagined as arising from the interaction of the evolving system with an
initially uncorrelated ancilla. The interaction is given by a joint unitary
operator, acting on the system and the ancilla. Here we study the properties
such a unitary operator must have in order to force the choice of a physical-
that is, positive-state for the ancilla if the end result is to be a
physical-that is, completely positive-evolution of the system.Comment: Quantum Information Processing, (2012
Nano-scale composition of commercial white powders for development of latent fingerprints on adhesives
This is the post-print version of the article - Copyright @ 2010 Elsevier.Titanium dioxide based powders are regularly used in the development of latent fingerprints on dark surfaces. For analysis of prints on adhesive tapes, the titanium dioxide can be suspended in a surfactant and used in the form of a powder suspension. Commercially available products, whilst having nominally similar composition, show varying levels of effectiveness of print development, with some powders adhering to the background as well as the print. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and laser particle sizing of the fingerprint powders show TiO2 particles with a surrounding coating, tens of nanometres thick, consisting of Al and Si rich material, with traces of sodium and sulphur. Such aluminosilicates are commonly used as anti-caking agents and to aid adhesion or functionality of some fingerprint powders; however, the morphology, thickness, coverage and composition of the aluminosilicates are the primary differences between the white powder formulations and could be related to variation in the efficacy of print development. This work is part funded by the Home Office Scientific Development Branch, UK
Hopping Conduction in Disordered Carbon Nanotubes
We report electrical transport measurements on individual disordered carbon
nanotubes, grown catalytically in a nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide template.
In both as-grown and annealed types of nanotubes, the low-field conductance
shows as exp[-(T_{0}/T)^{1/2}] dependence on temperature T, suggesting that
hopping conduction is the dominant transport mechanism, albeit with different
disorder-related coefficients T_{0}. The field dependence of low-temperature
conductance behaves an exp[-(xi_{0}/xi)^{1/2}] with high electric field xi at
sufficiently low T. Finally, both annealed and unannealed nanotubes exhibit
weak positive magnetoresistance at low T = 1.7 K. Comparison with theory
indicates that our data are best explained by Coulomb-gap variable range
hopping conduction and permits the extraction of disorder-dependent
localization length and dielectric constant.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Scherk-Schwarz Supersymmetry Breaking for Quasi-localized Matter Fields and Supersymmetry Flavor Violation
We examine the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters induced by the
Scherk-Schwarz (SS) boundary condition in 5-dimensional orbifold field theory
in which the quark and lepton zero modes are quasi-localized at the orbifold
fixed points to generate the hierarchical Yukawa couplings. In such theories,
the radion corresponds to a flavon to generate the flavor hierarchy and at the
same time plays the role of the messenger of supersymmetry breaking. As a
consequence, the resulting soft scalar masses and trilinear -parameters of
matter zero modes at the compactification scale are highly flavor-dependent,
thereby can lead to dangerous flavor violations at low energy scales. We
analyze in detail the low energy flavor violations in SS-dominated
supersymmetry breaking scenario under the assumption that the compactification
scale is close to the grand unification scale and the 4-dimensional effective
theory below the compactification scale is given by the minimal supersymmetric
standard model. Our analysis can be applied to any supersymmetry breaking
mechanism giving a sizable -component of the radion superfield, e.g. the
hidden gaugino condensation model.Comment: revtex4, 22 pages, some numerical errors are corrected in

Complementarity of the CERN Large Hadron Collider and the International Linear Collider
The next-generation high-energy facilities, the CERN Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) and the prospective International Linear Collider (ILC), are
expected to unravel new structures of matter and forces from the electroweak
scale to the TeV scale. In this report we review the complementary role of LHC
and ILC in drawing a comprehensive and high-precision picture of the mechanism
breaking the electroweak symmetries and generating mass, and the unification of
forces in the frame of supersymmetry.Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, to be published in "Supersymmetry on the Eve of

Energy band structure and intrinsic coherent properties in two weakly linked Bose Einstein Condensates
The energy band structure and energy splitting due to quantum tunneling in
two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates were calculated by using the
instanton method. The intrinsic coherent properties of Bose Josephson junction
were investigated in terms of energy splitting. For , the
energy splitting is small and the system is globally phase coherent. In the
opposite limit, , the energy splitting is large and the
system becomes a phase dissipation. Our reslults suggest that one should
investigate the coherence phenomna of BJJ in proper condition such as

Measuring superparticle masses at hadron collider using the transverse mass kink
We present a detailed study of the collider observable applied for
pair-produced superparticles decaying to visible particles and a pair of
invisible lightest supersymmetric particles (LSPs). Analytic expressions of the
maximum of over all events () are derived. It is
noticed that if the decay product of each superparticle involves more than one
visible particles, being a function of the {\it trial} LSP
mass has a kink structure at true LSP mass, which can be
used to determine the mother superparticle mass and the LSP mass
simultaneously. To see how well can be constructed from
collider data, a Monte-Carlo analysis of the gluino is performed for
some superparticle spectra.Comment: Typos corrected. A few references added. Figures update
A Bishop-Phelps-Bollobas Type Theorem for uniform algegras
This paper is devoted to showing that Asplund operators with range in a uniform Banach algebra have
the Bishop¿Phelps¿Bollobas property, i.e., they are approximated by norm attaining Asplund operators
at the same time that a point where the approximated operator almost attains its norm is approximated
by a point at which the approximating operator attains it. To prove this result we use the weak*-to-norm
fragmentability of weak*-compact subsets of the dual of Asplund spaces and we need to observe a Urysohn type result producing peak complex-valued functions in uniform algebras that are small outside a given open set and whose image is inside a Stolz region. This research was partially supported by MEC and FEDER projects MTM2008-05396 and MTM2011-25377.
