    Modulated structures in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals

    Motivated by experiments in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals with homeotropic alignment we study the coupled amplitude equations describing the formation of a stationary roll pattern in the presence of a weakly-damped mode that breaks isotropy. The equations can be generalized to describe the planarly aligned case if the orienting effect of the boundaries is small, which can be achieved by a destabilizing magnetic field. The slow mode represents the in-plane director at the center of the cell. The simplest uniform states are normal rolls which may undergo a pitchfork bifurcation to abnormal rolls with a misaligned in-plane director.We present a new class of defect-free solutions with spatial modulations perpendicular to the rolls. In a parameter range where the zig-zag instability is not relevant these solutions are stable attractors, as observed in experiments. We also present two-dimensionally modulated states with and without defects which result from the destabilization of the one-dimensionally modulated structures. Finally, for no (or very small) damping, and away from the rotationally symmetric case, we find static chevrons made up of a periodic arrangement of defect chains (or bands of defects) separating homogeneous regions of oblique rolls with very small amplitude. These states may provide a model for a class of poorly understood stationary structures observed in various highly-conducting materials ("prechevrons" or "broad domains").Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure

    Legitimacy Judgments about Corporate Tax Avoidance: A Deliberation Experiment

    Previous research has suggested that business firms need to engage in active dialogues with stakeholders to maintain their legitimacy. We investigate this “legitimation-as-deliberation” thesis in the context of global tax avoidance and explore whether and under what conditions deliberation leads to the legitimation or delegitimation of tax avoidance and the consultancies involved in facilitating tax avoidance. By conducting an experiment in which study participants discussed the issue of global tax avoidance with representatives of a tax accounting firm and/or representatives of an NGO critical of tax avoidance, we demonstrate that entering deliberations can indeed serve as legitimation strategy for firms. However, the direction and size of the effect depend on the relative persuasiveness of the representatives’ arguments. Moreover, representatives of the tax accounting firm have a stronger impact on participants’ legitimacy judgments about their organization, whereas representatives of the NGO mainly affect participants’ legitimacy judgments regarding the practice. Our study provides three contributions to management research. Phenomenologically, it sheds light on tax avoidance as an important but underexplored topic in management research. Methodologically, it develops an experimental design enabling causal inference about deliberative effects. Finally, theoretically, it conceptualizes legitimacy as a communicative process of making judgments

    Lipid-mimicking phosphorus-based glycosidase inactivators as pharmacological chaperones for the treatment of Gaucher's disease

    Gaucher's disease, the most prevalent lysosomal storage disorder, is caused by missense mutation of the GBA gene, ultimately resulting in deficient GCase activity, hence the excessive build-up of cellular glucosylceramide. Among different therapeutic strategies, pharmacological chaperoning of mutant GCase represents an attractive approach that relies on small organic molecules acting as protein stabilizers. Herein, we expand upon a new class of transient GCase inactivators based on a reactive 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-beta-d-glucoside tethered to an array of lipid-mimicking phosphorus-based aglycones, which not only improve the selectivity and inactivation efficiency, but also the stability of these compounds in aqueous media. This hypothesis was further validated with kinetic and cellular studies confirming restoration of catalytic activity in Gaucher cells after treatment with these pharmacological chaperones.Bio-organic Synthesi

    Experiencing the world with archetypal symbols: A new form of aesthetics.

    According to the theories of symbolic interactionism, phenomenology of perception and archetypes, we argue that symbols play the key role in translating the information from the physical world to the human experience, and archetypes are the universal knowledge of cognition that generates the background of human experience (the life-world). Therefore, we propose a conceptual framework that depicts how people experience the world with symbols, and how archetypes relate the deepest level of human experience. This framework indicates a new direction of research on memory and emotion, and also suggests that archetypal symbolism can be a new resource of aesthetic experience design.Postprint (published version
