Length-weight relationships of marine fishes from the central Brazilian coast

    Get PDF
Parameters of the length-weight relationship are presented for 85 fish species from the marine and estuarine regions of the central Brazilian coast (latitude 13° to 23° S). Three different methods were used. A non-linear iterative process using the quasi-Newton algorithm yielded a better fit for all data sets analyzed. The length-weight allometry coefficient b estimated from standard length data tended to be lower than from total length data. The difference between these estimates was significant for some species

AimThe aim of this study was to analyse the possible association between no success of dental implants and two polymorphisms, IL1A (-889) and IL1B (+3953), in a Caucasian Portuguese population, and a possible relationship with other potential risk variables associated with a peri-implant disease.Material and Methods155 unrelated Caucasian individuals, were divided into 2 groups: 100 with successful dental implant rehabilitations and 55 with unsuccessful ones. To identify the polymorphisms, in positions -889 of IL1A gene and +3953 of IL1B gene, was performed an oral mucosa scraping of the patients and the DNA obtained from epithelial cells. The data were analysed in the SPSS Statistics 17.0® and the statistic analysis included the independence test of the chi-square, the exact test of Fisher and techniques of analysis of binary logistic regression.ResultsThe estimated prevalence of polymorphisms of IL1A and IL1B gene, determined by the TGP (CGC Genetics, Portugal) results, in the Caucasian Portuguese population was of 33.5%.Success of rehabilitation with dental implants was more associated to a negative TGP result, whereas failure was found to be related to a positive result.Tobacco and alcohol consumption showed no statistically significant association with success or no success of the dental implants.ConclusionThe success of the dental implants was more associated with the presence of the allele 2 of the IL1A gene and the allele 2 of the IL1B gene.Tobacco and alcohol consumption showed no association with success or no success of the rehabilitation with dental implants

Objective: the purpose of this study is to assess the relationship of the upper and lower arch dimension changes after the rapid maxillary expansion (RME) with the screw opening of the modified Hyrax® type appliance. Materials and methods: initial (T1) and final (T2) models of study of 63 children between 7 years and 6 months and 16 years and 5 months were performed. From these, 21 showed maxillary atresia and/ or posterior crossbite and were submitted to expansion and 42 children formed the control group .The appliance used in this work was the modified Hyrax appliance using the 7mm expanding screws 'Dentarum'. The measures of the upper intercanine and the upper and lower intermolar distances were performed in plaster models with the help of a digital paquimeter. The opening of the appliance's screw was also assessed. Results: the RME provoked a statistically significant increase in the upper interdental distances and no statistic significance in the lower interdental distances, i.e. the change in the 16 - 26, 13 - 23 and 36 - 46 distance was of 5,85 mm, 5,31 and 0,34 mm respectively. The average opening of the expander screw, which was of 6,27 mm. Conclusion: the appliance's opening is related to the interdental distance changes, i.e. for each appliance's opening mm, a 0,94 variation in the upper intermolar distance, a 0,87 in the upper intercanine distance and 0,054 in the lower intermolar distance are provoked

Parking functions, labeled trees and DCJ sorting scenarios

In genome rearrangement theory, one of the elusive questions raised in recent years is the enumeration of rearrangement scenarios between two genomes. This problem is related to the uniform generation of rearrangement scenarios, and the derivation of tests of statistical significance of the properties of these scenarios. Here we give an exact formula for the number of double-cut-and-join (DCJ) rearrangement scenarios of co-tailed genomes. We also construct effective bijections between the set of scenarios that sort a cycle and well studied combinatorial objects such as parking functions and labeled trees.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

Effect of air pollution on diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in São Paulo, Brazil

    Get PDF
Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality and these patients, even without previous myocardial infarction, run the risk of fatal coronary heart disease similar to non-diabetic patients surviving myocardial infarction. There is evidence showing that particulate matter air pollution is associated with increases in cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of diabetes mellitus on the association of air pollution with cardiovascular emergency room visits in a tertiary referral hospital in the city of São Paulo. Using a time-series approach, and adopting generalized linear Poisson regression models, we assessed the effect of daily variations in PM10, CO, NO2, SO2, and O3 on the daily number of emergency room visits for cardiovascular diseases in diabetic and non-diabetic patients from 2001 to 2003. A semi-parametric smoother (natural spline) was adopted to control long-term trends, linear term seasonal usage and weather variables. In this period, 45,000 cardiovascular emergency room visits were registered. The observed increase in interquartile range within the 2-day moving average of 8.0 µg/m³ SO2 was associated with 7.0% (95%CI: 4.0-11.0) and 20.0% (95%CI: 5.0-44.0) increases in cardiovascular disease emergency room visits by non-diabetic and diabetic groups, respectively. These data indicate that air pollution causes an increase of cardiovascular emergency room visits, and that diabetic patients are extremely susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution on their health conditions.

This bibliographical review approaches complications in the use of botulinum toxin in aesthetic procedures. Scientific references were analyzed, including clinical studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The main complications reported were eyelid ptosis, facial asymmetry, unwanted effects on the smile, pain at the injection site, ecchymosis and edema. Despite this, complications are generally of low incidence, mild and transient. The review emphasizes the importance of the health professional's knowledge and experience in the prevention and proper management of these complications. Botulinum toxin continues to be considered a safe and effective treatment when administered correctly.  Esta revisión de la literatura aborda las complicacionesen el uso de la toxina botulínica en procedimientos estéticos. Twist Deformations of the Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

The N-extended Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics is deformed via an abelian twist which preserves the super-Hopf algebra structure of its Universal Enveloping Superalgebra. Two constructions are possible. For even N one can identify the 1D N-extended superalgebra with the fermionic Heisenberg algebra. Alternatively, supersymmetry generators can be realized as operators belonging to the Universal Enveloping Superalgebra of one bosonic and several fermionic oscillators. The deformed system is described in terms of twisted operators satisfying twist-deformed (anti)commutators. The main differences between an abelian twist defined in terms of fermionic operators and an abelian twist defined in terms of bosonic operators are discussed.Comment: 18 pages; two references adde
