    Thermal detection of single e-h pairs in a biased silicon crystal detector

    We demonstrate that individual electron-hole pairs are resolved in a 1 cm2^2 by 4 mm thick silicon crystal (0.93 g) operated at ∼\sim35 mK. One side of the detector is patterned with two quasiparticle-trap-assisted electro-thermal-feedback transition edge sensor (QET) arrays held near ground potential. The other side contains a bias grid with 20\% coverage. Bias potentials up to ±\pm 160 V were used in the work reported here. A fiber optic provides 650~nm (1.9 eV) photons that each produce an electron-hole (e−h+e^{-} h^{+}) pair in the crystal near the grid. The energy of the drifting charges is measured with a phonon sensor noise σ\sigma ∼\sim0.09 e−h+e^{-} h^{+} pair. The observed charge quantization is nearly identical for h+h^+'s or e−e^-'s transported across the crystal.Comment: 4 journal pages, 5 figure

    Epidermal PPARγ influences subcutaneous tumor growth and acts through TNF-α to regulate contact hypersensitivity and the acute photoresponse

    It is known that ultraviolet B (UVB) induces PPARγ ligand formation while loss of murine epidermal PPARγ (Pparg-/-epi) promotes UVB-induced apoptosis, inflammation, and carcinogenesis. PPARγ is known to suppress tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) production. TNF-α is also known to promote UVB-induced inflammation, apoptosis, and immunosuppression. We show that Pparg-/-epi mice exhibit increased baseline TNF-α expression. Neutralizing Abs to TNF-α block the increased photo-inflammation and photo-toxicity that is observed in Pparg-/-epi mouse skin. Interestingly, the increase in UVB-induced apoptosis in Pparg-/-epi mice is not accompanied by a change in cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer clearance or in mutation burden. This suggests that loss of epidermal PPARγ does not result in a significant alteration in DNA repair capacity. However, loss of epidermal PPARγ results in marked immunosuppression using a contact hypersensitivity (CHS) model. This impaired CHS response was significantly alleviated using neutralizing TNF-α antibodies or loss of germline Tnf. In addition, the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone reversed UVB-induced systemic immunosuppression (UV-IS) as well as UV-induced growth of B16F10 melanoma tumor cells in syngeneic mice. Finally, increased B16F10 tumor growth was observed when injected subcutaneously into Pparg-/-epi mice. Thus, we provide novel evidence that epidermal PPARγ is important for cutaneous immune function and the acute photoresponse

    Sound Multi-Party Business Protocols for Service Networks

    Service networks comprise large numbers of long-running, highly dynamic complex end-to-end service interactions reflecting asynchronous message flows that typically transcend several organizations and span several geographical locations. At the communication level, service network business protocols can be flexible ranging from conventional inter-organizational point-to-point service interactions to fully blown dynamic multi-party interactions of global reach within which each participant may contribute its activities and services. In this paper we introduce a formal framework enriched with temporal constraints to describe multiparty business protocols for service networks. We extend this framework with the notion of multi-party business protocol soundness and show how it is possible to execute a multi-party protocol consistently in a completely distributed manner while guaranteeing eventual termination

    Understanding Tradeoffs Between Food and Predation Risks in a Specialist Mammalian Herbivore

    Understanding habitat use by animals requires understanding the simultaneous tradeoffs between food and predation risk within a landscape. Quantifying the synergy between patches that provide quality food and those that are safe from predators at a scale relevant to a foraging animal could better reveal the parameters that influence habitat selection. To understand more thoroughly how animals select habitat components, we investigated tradeoffs between diet quality and predation risk in a species endemic to sagebrush Artemisia spp. communities in North America, the pygmy rabbitBrachylagus idahoensis. This species is a rare example of a specialist herbivore that relies almost entirely on sagebrush for food and cover. We hypothesized that pygmy rabbits would forage in areas with low food risk (free of plant secondary metabolites, PSMs) and low predation risk (high concealment). However, because of relatively high tolerance to PSMs in sagebrush by pygmy rabbits, we hypothesized that they would trade off the risk of PSM-containing food to select lower predation risk when risks co-occurred. We compared food intake of pygmy rabbits during three double-choice trials designed to examine tradeoffs by offering animals two levels of food risk (1,8-cineole, a PSM) and predation risk (concealment cover). Rabbits ate more food at feeding stations with PSM-free food and high concealment cover. However, interactions between PSMs and cover suggested that the value of PSM-free food could be reduced if concealment is low and the value of high concealment can decrease if food contains PSMs. Furthermore, foraging decisions by individual rabbits suggested variation in tolerance of food or predation risks

    On the complexity of strongly connected components in directed hypergraphs

    We study the complexity of some algorithmic problems on directed hypergraphs and their strongly connected components (SCCs). The main contribution is an almost linear time algorithm computing the terminal strongly connected components (i.e. SCCs which do not reach any components but themselves). "Almost linear" here means that the complexity of the algorithm is linear in the size of the hypergraph up to a factor alpha(n), where alpha is the inverse of Ackermann function, and n is the number of vertices. Our motivation to study this problem arises from a recent application of directed hypergraphs to computational tropical geometry. We also discuss the problem of computing all SCCs. We establish a superlinear lower bound on the size of the transitive reduction of the reachability relation in directed hypergraphs, showing that it is combinatorially more complex than in directed graphs. Besides, we prove a linear time reduction from the well-studied problem of finding all minimal sets among a given family to the problem of computing the SCCs. Only subquadratic time algorithms are known for the former problem. These results strongly suggest that the problem of computing the SCCs is harder in directed hypergraphs than in directed graphs.Comment: v1: 32 pages, 7 figures; v2: revised version, 34 pages, 7 figure

    Differential Proliferative Characteristics of Alveolar Fibroblasts in Interstitial Lung Diseases: Regulative Role of IL-1 and PGE2

    Fibroblasts (Fb) from patients with sarcoidosis (SA) and hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) exhibited a lower proliferative capacity compared with Fb obtained from control (CO) and diffuse interstitial fibrosis patients (DIF). Proliferation of Fb from SA or lip patients was suppressed by autologous LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages (AM) supernatants but not by those from CO patients. Similarly, alveolar macrophages (AM) derived supernatant, obtained from CO, did not suppress the proliferation of SA and HP Fb. AM from SA and HP patients secreted higher amounts of IL-1α and β compared with controls and compared with Fb from SA and HP patients. Steady levels of IL-1α and βmRNA were expressed in unstimulated and stimulated cultures. Fb from SA and HP patients could be stimulated by LPS to secrete significantly higher levels of PGE2 than those detected in supernatants from LPS stimulated Fb of DIF patients. Only the proliferation of Fb from SA and HP patients was sensitive to amounts of IL-1 equivalent to those detected in the lung of these diseases. As SA and HP are two diseases where irreversible deterioration occurs in only 20% of the patients, we hypothesize that mediators in the lung may modulate Fb proliferation. IL-1 of AM origin and PGE2 of Fb origin secreted at high levels, may be candidates for this suppression because it was abrogated by anti IL-1β and indomethacin

    Tests of Lorentz violation in muon antineutrino to electron antineutrino oscillations

    A recently developed Standard-Model Extension (SME) formalism for neutrino oscillations that includes Lorentz and CPT violation is used to analyze the sidereal time variation of the neutrino event excess measured by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment. The LSND experiment, performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, observed an excess, consistent with neutrino oscillations, of νˉe{\bar\nu}_e in a beam of νˉμ{\bar\nu}_\mu. It is determined that the LSND oscillation signal is consistent with no sidereal variation. However, there are several combinations of SME coefficients that describe the LSND data; both with and without sidereal variations. The scale of Lorentz and CPT violation extracted from the LSND data is of order 10−1910^{-19} GeV for the SME coefficients aLa_L and E×cLE \times c_L. This solution for Lorentz and CPT violating neutrino oscillations may be tested by other short baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, such as the MiniBooNE experiment.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, uses revtex4 replaced with version to be published in Physical Review D, 11 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, uses revtex

    New Results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search Experiment

    Using improved Ge and Si detectors, better neutron shielding, and increased counting time, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment has obtained stricter limits on the cross section of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) elastically scattering from nuclei. Increased discrimination against electromagnetic backgrounds and reduction of neutron flux confirm WIMP-candidate events previously detected by CDMS were consistent with neutrons and give limits on spin-independent WIMP interactions which are >2X lower than previous CDMS results for high WIMP mass, and which exclude new parameter space for WIMPs with mass between 8-20 GeV/c^2.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
