Mineralogical study of the Gonçalo Li-pegmatite deposit, Portugal
Beside the Scandinavian countries and Serbia, Portugal is among the European countries with the most significant lithium resources. The Li-rich occurrences in Portugal are mainly associated with aplite-pegmatite dykes and sills intruded in granitic and metasedimentary rocks of the Central Iberian and Galicia – Trás-os-Montes geotectonic zones (Carvalho & Farinha, 2004). The Gonçalo Li-pegmatites in the Guarda district (currently only used as decorative stone) have significant economic importance. Among other deposits, Gonçalo is a reference site in the focus of the EU FAME project (www.fame-project.eu) that aims to unlock the development potential of the most promising European Sn-W-Li ore types. Results of optical microscopy, QEMSCAN©, Raman and electron-probe microanalysis of the Gonçalo Li-pegmatite deposit have been employed to determine the mineralogical variability of the pegmatites with the aim to determine the deportment of lithium and potential rare-metal by-products and to guide enhanced mineral processing technologies.Available to download freely and reproduced here with permission of the publisher. The Alvarrões-Gonçalo Li project: an example of sustainable lithium mining
Across Europe, small scale deposits of critical materials
and/or strategic elements, such as W, Li and Sn, are not viable to mine and process using the traditional
large scale mining and processing technologies due to their geological
characteristics. Project FAME (Flexible And Mobile Economic Processing
Technologies, EC Horizon 2020 Grant Agreement No. 641650) was created in
order to specifically address the technical and environmental challenges to
the sustainable processing of low sulphide ores from pegmatites, greisens
and skarns deposits. One of the deposits, Alvarrões-Gonçalo, is a Li
pegmatite located at the Gonçalo pegmatite field (Central Portugal) that
is being investigated on the scope of the concerned project. Currently, the
pegmatites are only being exploited for ceramics, aggregates and ornamental
purposes, however, there is exploitation potential for Li2O-rich ores.
Froth flotation is being tested to produce a lepidolite concentrate. Results
showed the feasibility to obtain a Li2O grade adequate for the
metallurgical production of lithium compounds as Li2CO3. The
lepidolite flotation rejects, normally stored in tailings dumps, are mainly
composed by a mixture of feldspars, quartz and non-recovered lepidolite
(though a very low content), which is, by itself, a very interesting raw
material for ceramic purposes. Consequently, mining exploitation of
lepidolite, as Li2O ore, from pegmatite could comply with the standards
of green mining, reaching an almost zero waste exploitation, as it
can be accomplished in the case of the mineral processing of the
Alvarrões-Gonçalo lithium ore. This basic scenario could be improved
by applying froth flotation also for feldspars/quartz separation, aiming at
obtaining a high content feldspars concentrate (floated) and a quartz
product (non-floated): the feldspars concentrate can be used to produce
blends with different ratios feldspars/quartz for sanitary ware and tiles
and quartz for other uses, such as glasses and silica flour.</p

Lead content and isotopic composition in submound and recent soils of the Volga upland
Literature data on the historical reconstructions of the atmospheric lead deposition in Europe and the isotopic composition of the ores that are potential sources of the anthropogenic lead in the atmospheric deposition in the lower Volga steppes during different time periods have been compiled. The effect of the increasing anthropogenic lead deposition recorded since the Bronze Age on the level of soil contamination has been investigated. For the first time paleosol buried under a burial mound of the Bronze Age has been used as a reference point to assess of the current contamination level. The contents and isotopic compositions of the mobile and total lead have been determined in submound paleosols of different ages and their recent remote and roadside analogues. An increase in the content and fraction of the mobile lead and a shift of its isotopic composition toward less radiogenic values (typical for lead from the recent anthropogenic sources) has been revealed when going from a Bronze-Age paleosol to a recent soil. In the Bronze-Age soil, the isotopic composition of the mobile lead is inherited from the parent rock to a greater extent than in the modern soils, where the lead is enriched with the less radiogenic component. The effect of the anthropogenic component is traced in the analysis of the mobile lead, but it is barely visible for the total lead. An exception is provided by the recent roadside soils characterized by increased contents and the significantly less radiogenic isotopic composition of the mobile and total lead

Can information affect sensory perceptions? Evidence from a survey on Italian organic food consumers
This paper aims to investigate the influence of information on consumers’ preferences and sensory perceptions of organic food using a sample of 301 Italian organic food consumers. Consumers stated their preferences for “core organic” attributes, labels and information on food products and performed blind and informed tests on strawberry yoghurts and cookies. Data were analysed using descriptive analysis, Mann-Whitney U tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results revealed that consumers appreciate “core organic” attributes, like artisanal production and variability of sensory attributes. Comparing blind and informed tests, results showed that information affects the overall liking of products and consumers’ perception of product-specific sensory attributes. However, the influence of information on sensory perceptions depends on the product category, sensory attributes and the type of information provided
Current trend in synthesis, Post-Synthetic modifications and biological applications of Nanometal-Organic frameworks (NMOFs)
Since the early reports of MOFs and their interesting properties, research involving these materials has grown wide in scope and applications. Various synthetic approaches have ensued in view of obtaining materials with optimised properties, the extensive scope of application spanning from energy, gas sorption, catalysis biological applications has meant exponentially evolved over the years. The far‐reaching synthetic and PSM approaches and porosity control possibilities have continued to serve as a motivation for research on these materials. With respect to the biological applications, MOFs have shown promise as good candidates in applications involving drug delivery, BioMOFs, sensing, imaging amongst others. Despite being a while away from successful entry into the market, observed results in sensing, drug delivery, and imaging put these materials on the spot light as candidates poised to usher in a revolution in biology. In this regard, this review article focuses current approaches in synthesis, post functionalization and biological applications of these materials with particular attention on drug delivery, imaging, sensing and BioMOFs
