Fractional CO2 laser for genitourinary syndrome of menopause in breast cancer survivors: clinical, immunological, and microbiological aspects
The composition of vaginal microbiome in menopause and cancer survivor women changes dramatically leading to genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) in up to 70% of patients. Recent reports suggest that laser therapy may be valuable as a not hormonal therapeutic modality. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of fractional CO2 laser treatment on the vaginal secretory pathway of a large panel of immune mediators, usually implicated in tissue remodeling and inflammation, and on microbiome composition in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. The Ion Torrent PGM platform and the Luminex Bio-Plex platform were used for microbiome and immune factor analysis. The significant reduction of clinical symptoms and the non-significant changes in vaginal microbiome support the efficacy and safety of laser treatment. Moreover, the high remodeling status in vaginal epithelium is demonstrated by the significant changes in inflammatory and modulatory cytokine patterns. Laser therapy can be used for the treatment of GSM symptoms and does not show any adverse effects. However, further studies will be needed to clarify its long-term efficacy and other effects

The third Workshop of the NuMass series ("The Future of Neutrino Mass
Measurements: Terrestrial, Astrophysical, and Cosmological Measurements in the
Next Decade: NuMass 2013") was held at Dipartimento di Fisica "G. Occhialini,
University of Milano-Bicocca in Milano, Italy, on 4-7 February 2013. The goal
of this international workshop was to review the status and future of direct
and indirect neutrino mass measurements in the laboratory as well as from
astrophysical and cosmological observations. This paper collects most of the
contributions presented during the Workshop
A New Limit on the Neutrinoless DBD of 130Te
We report the present results of CUORICINO a cryogenic experiment on
neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) of 130Te consisting of an array of 62
crystals of TeO2 with a total active mass of 40.7 kg. The array is framed
inside of a dilution refrigerator, heavily shielded against environmental
radioactivity and high-energy neutrons, and operated at a temperature of ~8 mK
in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. Temperature pulses induced by
particle interacting in the crystals are recorded and measured by means of
Neutron Transmutation Doped thermistors. The gain of each bolometer is
stabilized with voltage pulses developed by a high stability pulse generator
across heater resistors put in thermal contact with the absorber.
The calibration is performed by means of two thoriated wires routinely
inserted in the set-up. No evidence for a peak indicating neutrinoless DBD of
130Te is detected and a 90% C.L. lower limit of 1.8E24 years is set for the
lifetime of this process. Taking largely into account the uncertainties in the
theoretical values of nuclear matrix elements, this implies an upper boud on
the effective mass of the electron neutrino ranging from 0.2 to 1.1 eV. This
sensitivity is similar to those of the 76Ge experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Beta decay of 115-In to the first excited level of 115-Sn: Potential outcome for neutrino mass
Recent observation of beta decay of 115-In to the first excited level of
115-Sn with an extremely low Q_beta value (Q_beta ~ 1 keV) could be used to set
a limit on neutrino mass. To give restriction potentially competitive with
those extracted from experiments with 3-H (~2 eV) and 187-Re (~15 eV), atomic
mass difference between 115-In and 115-Sn and energy of the first 115-Sn level
should be remeasured with higher accuracy (possibly of the order of ~1 eV).Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; talk at the NANP'05 Conferenc

CUORE is a proposed tightly packed array of 1000 TeO_{2} bolometers, each
being a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 750 gms. The array consists of 25
vertical towers, arranged in a square, of 5 towers by 5 towers, each containing
10 layers of 4 crystals. The design of the detector is optimized for ultralow-
background searches for neutrinoless double beta decay of ^{130}Te (33.8%
abundance), cold dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. A
preliminary experiment involving 20 crystals of various sizes (MIBETA) has been
completed, and a single CUORE tower is being constructed as a smaller scale
experiment called CUORICINO. The expected performance and sensitivity, based on

Approaches in Sustainable, Biobased Multilayer Packaging Solutions
The depletion of fossil resources and the growing demand for plastic waste reduction has put industries and academic researchers under pressure to develop increasingly sustainable packaging solutions that are both functional and circularly designed. In this review, we provide an overview of the fundamentals and recent advances in biobased packaging materials, including new materials and techniques for their modification as well as their end-of-life scenarios. We also discuss the composition and modification of biobased films and multilayer structures, with particular attention to readily available drop-in solutions, as well as coating techniques. Moreover, we discuss end-of-life factors, including sorting systems, detection methods, composting options, and recycling and upcycling possibilities. Finally, regulatory aspects are pointed out for each application scenario and end-of-life option. Moreover, we discuss the human factor in terms of consumer perception and acceptance of upcycling
CUORE and beyond: bolometric techniques to explore inverted neutrino mass hierarchy
The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will
search for neutrinoless double beta decay of Te. With 741 kg of TeO
crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of
interest, CUORE will be one of the most competitive neutrinoless double beta
decay experiments on the horizon. With five years of live time, CUORE projected
neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is y
at ( y at the 90% confidence level), which
corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range
40--100 meV (50--130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary light
detector can significantly improve the search sensitivity and competitiveness
of bolometric detectors to fully explore the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy
