The Renormalization Group Limit Cycle for the 1/r^2 Potential
Previous work has shown that if an attractive 1/r^2 potential is regularized
at short distances by a spherical square-well potential, renormalization allows
multiple solutions for the depth of the square well. The depth can be chosen to
be a continuous function of the short-distance cutoff R, but it can also be a
log-periodic function of R with finite discontinuities, corresponding to a
renormalization group (RG) limit cycle. We consider the regularization with a
delta-shell potential. In this case, the coupling constant is uniquely
determined to be a log-periodic function of R with infinite discontinuities,
and an RG limit cycle is unavoidable. In general, a regularization with an RG
limit cycle is selected as the correct renormalization of the 1/r^2 potential
by the conditions that the cutoff radius R can be made arbitrarily small and
that physical observables are reproduced accurately at all energies much less

Deep-Diving and Diel Changes in Vertical Habitat Use by Caribbean Reef Sharks Carcharhinus perezi
Longline sampling (83 sets) supplemented with 6 pop-off archival transmitting (PAT) tag deployments were used to characterize vertical habitat use by Caribbean reef sharks Carcharhinus perezi at Glover\u27s Reef atoll, Belize. Longline catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) in 2 shallow reef habitats (lagoon \u3c18 m depth, fore-reef \u3c40 m depth) underwent significant nocturnal increases for sharks larger than 110 cm total length (TL), but not for smaller sharks. Nocturnal CPUE of small sharks appeared to increase in the lagoon and decrease on the fore-reef, suggestive of movements to avoid larger conspecifics. PAT tag deployments (7 to 20 d) indicate that large C. perezi generally increased the amount of time they spent in the upper 40 m of the water column during the night, and inhabited much greater depths and tolerated lower temperatures than previously described. The wide vertical (0 to 356 m) and temperature range (31 to 12.4°C) documented for this top-predator reveals ecological coupling of deep and shallow reef habitats and has implications for Marine Protected Area (MPA) design
Virgin Birth in a Hammerhead Shark
Parthenogenesis has been documented in all major jawed vertebrate lineages except mammals and cartilaginous fishes (class Chondrichthyes: sharks, batoids and chimeras). Reports of captive female sharks giving birth despite being held in the extended absence of males have generally been ascribed to prior matings coupled with long-term sperm storage by the females. Here, we provide the first genetic evidence for chondrichthyan parthenogenesis, involving a hammerhead shark (Sphyrna tiburo). This finding also broadens the known occurrence of a specific type of asexual development (automictic parthenogenesis) among vertebrates, extending recently raised concerns about the potential negative effect of this type of facultative parthenogenesis on the genetic diversity of threatened vertebrate species
Enhancing the energy resolution of resonant coherent excitation using the cooled U 89+ beam extracted from the ESR
Synopsis We report on the resonant coherent excitation (RCE) of the 2 s -2 p 3/2 transition in Li-like U 89+ with an enhanced energy resolution, which was achieved by reducing the projectiles momentum spread. The kinetic temperature of the beam was decreased by electron cooling in the ESR, and the collisional momentum broadening in the target was suppressed by the use of thin crystal (1.0 and 2.5 ÎŒm-thick). The resonance width was observed to be âŒ1.4 eV in FWHM, which is three-times narrower than that from the previous work
Electron gas polarization effect induced by heavy H-like ions of moderate velocities channeled in a silicon crystal
We report on the observation of a strong perturbation of the electron gas
induced by 20 MeV/u U ions and 13 MeV/u Pb ions channeled in
silicon crystals. This collective response (wake effect) in-duces a shift of
the continuum energy level by more than 100 eV, which is observed by means of
Radiative Electron Capture into the K and L-shells of the projectiles. We also
observe an increase of the REC probability by 20-50% relative to the
probability in a non-perturbed electron gas. The energy shift is in agreement
with calculations using the linear response theory, whereas the local electron
density enhancement is much smaller than predicted by the same model. This
shows that, for the small values of the adiabaticity parameter achieved in our
experiments, the density fluctuations are not strongly localized at the
vicinity of the heavy ions
The Behavioural and Genetic Mating System of the Sand Tiger Shark, Carcharias taurus, an Intrauterine Cannibal
Sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus) have an unusual mode of reproduction, whereby the first embryos in each of the paired uteri to reach a certain size (âhatchlingsâ) consume all of their smaller siblings during gestation (âembryonic cannibalismâ or EC). If females commonly mate with multiple males (âbehavioural polyandryâ) then litters could initially have multiple sires. It is possible, however, that EC could exclude of all but one of these sires from producing offspring thus influencing the species genetic mating system (âgenetic monogamyâ). Here, we use microsatellite DNA profiling of mothers and their litters (n = 15, from two to nine embryos per litter) to quantify the frequency of behavioural and genetic polyandry in this system. We conservatively estimate that nine of the females we examined (60%) were behaviourally polyandrous. The genetic mating system was characterized by assessing sibling relationships between hatchlings and revealed only 40 per cent genetic polyandry (i.e. hatchlings were full siblings in 60% of litters). The discrepancy stemmed from three females that were initially fertilized by multiple males but only produced hatchlings with one of them. This reveals that males can be excluded even after fertilizing ova and that some instances of genetic monogamy in this population arise from the reduction in litter size by EC. More research is needed on how cryptic post-copulatory and post-zygotic processes contribute to determining paternity and bridging the behavioural and genetic mating systems of viviparous species
Genetic Connectivity of a Coral Reef Ecosystem Predator: The Population Genetic Structure and Evolutionary History of the Caribbean Reef Shark (Carcharhinus perezi)
Aim
The Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi) is one of few extant reef sharks inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean. Its variability in movements across habitat types suggests the possibility of a complex genetic population structure. Here, we use mitochondrial and nuclear DNA to investigate the genetic connectivity of the Caribbean reef shark across contemporary and evolutionary time-scales and relate our findings to the ecology of this understudied species.
Location
Tropical western Atlantic and Caribbean.
Methods
Samples were obtained from 216 individuals from six western Atlantic and Caribbean locations. Individuals were genotyped at seven nuclear microsatellite DNA loci and sequenced at two mitochondrial (control region [CR]; NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 [ND4]) and one nuclear locus (lactate dehydrogenase [LDH]). Analyses to resolve the population genetic structure and evolutionary history of this species were adopted.
Results
Sequencing of the CR (1,068 bp, n = 216), ND4 (741 bp, n = 213) and LDH (258 bp, n = 165) loci, resolved 11, 8 and 13 unique haplotypes (or alleles), respectively. Overall, Caribbean reef sharks showed low levels of genetic diversity and most marker sets identified strong genetic differences (FSTand ΊST) between sharks sampled in Brazil versus all other locations (msat FST \u3e 0.017; CR-ND4 ΊST \u3e 0.013). Mitochondrial DNA showed evidence of increased genetic partitioning among western North Atlantic sampling sites, although widespread haplotype sharing (~85%â92%) and a shallow population history were found.
Main Conclusions
Findings of genetic differentiation are concordant with previous movement studies showing residency and/or site-fidelity to specific locations by individuals. However, similar to other reef shark studies, we found that the level of genetic connectivity among populations was context dependentâi.e., sharks occupying isolated habitats showed greater genetic differentiation compared with those sharks occupying semi-isolated or continuous reef habitats. Furthermore, low genetic diversity and a shallow mitochondrial population history were found, suggesting historical demographic fluctuations, including population collapse and more recent expansions
Optimization by Quantum Annealing: Lessons from hard 3-SAT cases
The Path Integral Monte Carlo simulated Quantum Annealing algorithm is
applied to the optimization of a large hard instance of the Random 3-SAT
Problem (N=10000). The dynamical behavior of the quantum and the classical
annealing are compared, showing important qualitative differences in the way of
exploring the complex energy landscape of the combinatorial optimization
problem. At variance with the results obtained for the Ising spin glass and for
the Traveling Salesman Problem, in the present case the linear-schedule Quantum
Annealing performance is definitely worse than Classical Annealing.
Nevertheless, a quantum cooling protocol based on field-cycling and able to
outperform standard classical simulated annealing over short time scales is

Augmenting the 6-3-5 method with design information
This paper describes a comparative study between the 6-3-5 Method and the ICR Grid. The ICR Grid is an evolved variant of 6-3-5 intended to better integrate information into the concept generation process. Unlike a conventional 6-3-5 process where participants continually sketch concepts, using the ICR Grid (the name derived from its Inform, Create, Reflect activities and structured, grid-like output) participants are additionally required to undertake information search tasks, use specific information items for concept development, and reflect on the merit of concepts as the session progresses. The results indicate that although the quantity of concepts was lower, the use of information had a positive effect in a number of areas, principally the quality and variety of output. Although grounded in the area of product development, this research is applicable to any organisation undertaking idea generation and problem solving. As well as providing insights on the transference of information to concepts, it holds additional interest for studies on the composition and use of digital libraries
