    An economic survey of New Zealand wheatgrowers : survey no. 2

    This is survey number 2. No. 1 was know as "National wheatgrowers' survey"This Report is the second in an annual series of economic surveys of New Zealand wheatgrowing farms. These surveys have been undertaken by the Agricultural Economics Research Unit at Lincoln College on behalf of Wheat Growers Sub-Section of Federated Farmers of New Zealand Inc. Specific attention has been focused on the physical characteristics of wheatgrowing farms, the area of wheat and other crops sown, wheat yields, cultural practices and costs and returns for the 1977/78 wheat crop. An attempt has also been made to allocate plant and machinery overhead costs to the wheat enterprise on both an historical and current cost basis. The need for current and detailed information from the Survey involved two visits to the farms in the sample; one in the spring following drilling and the second in the autumn after harvest

    This paper presents the results of the Dynamic Pricing Challenge, held on the occasion of the 17th INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section Conference on June 29–30, 2017 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. For this challenge, participants submitted algorithms for pricing and demand learning of which the numerical performance was analyzed in simulated market environments. This allows consideration of market dynamics that are not analytically tractable or can not be empirically analyzed due to practical complications. Our findings implicate that the relative performance of algorithms varies substantially across different market dynamics, which confirms the intrinsic complexity of pricing and learning in the presence of competition

    Trends in alcohol-related injury admissions in adolescents in Western Australia and England: population-based cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related harm in young people is now a global health priority. We examined trends in hospital admissions for alcohol-related injuries for adolescents in Western Australia (WA) and in England, identified groups most at risk and determined causes of injuries. METHODS: Annual incidence rates for alcohol-related injury rates were calculated using population-level hospital admissions data for WA and England. We compared trends in different types of alcohol-related injury by age and gender. RESULTS: Despite a decrease in the overall rate of injury admissions for people aged 13-17 years in WA, alcohol-related injuries have increased significantly from 1990 to 2009 (from 8 to 12 per 10 000). Conversely, alcohol-related injury rates have declined in England since 2007. In England, self-harm is the most frequently recorded cause of alcohol-related injury. In WA, unintentional injury is most common; however, violence-related harm is increasing for boys and girls. CONCLUSION: Alcohol-related harm of sufficient severity to require hospital admission is increasing among adolescents in WA. Declining trends in England suggest that this trend is not inevitable or irreversible. More needs to be done to address alcohol-related harm, and on-going monitoring is required to assess the effectiveness of strategies

    Explicit volume-preserving numerical schemes for relativistic trajectories and spin dynamics

    A class of explicit numerical schemes is developed to solve for the relativistic dynamics and spin of particles in electromagnetic fields, using the Lorentz-BMT equation formulated in the Clifford algebra representation of Baylis. It is demonstrated that these numerical methods, reminiscent of the leapfrog and Verlet methods, share a number of important properties: they are energy-conserving, volume-conserving and second order convergent. These properties are analysed empirically by benchmarking against known analytical solutions in constant uniform electrodynamic fields. It is demonstrated that the numerical error in a constant magnetic field remains bounded for long time simulations in contrast to the Boris pusher, whose angular error increases linearly with time. Finally, the intricate spin dynamics of a particle is investigated in a plane wave field configuration.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    Evolution of Flexible Multibody Dynamics for Simulation Applications Supporting Human Spaceflight

    During the course of transition from the Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs to the Orion and Journey to Mars exploration programs, a generic flexible multibody dynamics formulation and associated software implementation has evolved to meet an ever changing set of requirements at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). Challenging problems related to large transitional topologies and robotic free-flyer vehicle capture/ release, contact dynamics, and exploration missions concept evaluation through simulation (e.g., asteroid surface operations) have driven this continued development. Coupled with this need is the requirement to oftentimes support human spaceflight operations in real-time. Moreover, it has been desirable to allow even more rapid prototyping of on-orbit manipulator and spacecraft systems, to support less complex infrastructure software for massively integrated simulations, to yield further computational efficiencies, and to take advantage of recent advances and availability of multi-core computing platforms. Since engineering analysis, procedures development, and crew familiarity/training for human spaceflight is fundamental to JSC's charter, there is also a strong desire to share and reuse models in both the non-realtime and real-time domains, with the goal of retaining as much multibody dynamics fidelity as possible. Three specific enhancements are reviewed here: (1) linked list organization to address large transitional topologies, (2) body level model order reduction, and (3) parallel formulation/implementation. This paper provides a detailed overview of these primary updates to JSC's flexible multibody dynamics algorithms as well as a comparison of numerical results to previous formulations and associated software

    Spectroscopy of 50^{50}Sc and ab initio calculations of B(M3)B(M3) strengths

    The GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC has been used to study excited states and transitions in 50^{50}Sc following the β\beta-decay of 50^{50}Ca. Branching ratios were determined from the measured γ\gamma-ray intensities, and angular correlations of γ\gamma rays have been used to firmly assign the spins of excited states. The presence of an isomeric state that decays by an M3M3 transition with a B(M3)B(M3) strength of 13.6(7)\,W.u. has been confirmed. We compare with the first {\it ab initio} calculations of B(M3B(M3) strengths in light and medium-mass nuclei from the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group approach, using consistently derived effective Hamiltonians and M3M3 operator. The experimental data are well reproduced for isoscalar M3M3 transitions when using bare gg-factors, but the strength of isovector M3M3 transitions are found to be underestimated by an order of magnitude

    Declining drinking among adolescents: are we seeing a denormalisation of drinking and a normalisation of non-drinking?

    Background In the early 2000s, alcohol use among young people began to decline in many western countries, especially among adolescents (aged between 12-17 years old). These declines have continued steadily over the past two decades, against the backdrop of much smaller declines among the general population. Argument Hypotheses examining individual factors fail adequately to provide the necessary ‘big picture’ thinking needed to understand declines in adolescent drinking. We use the normalisation thesis to argue that there is strong international evidence for both processes of denormalisation of drinking and normalisation of non-drinking occurring for adolescents in many western countries. Conclusions Research on declining adolescent drinking provides evidence of both denormalisation of alcohol consumption and normalisation of non-drinking. This has implications for enabling policy environments more amenable to regulation and increasing the acceptability of non-drinking in social contexts. Normalisation theory (and its various interpretations) provides a useful multi-dimensional tool for understanding declines in adolescent drinking

    Unusual Symmetries in the Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian

    The Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian for cubic titanates describes spin and orbital superexchange interactions between d1d^1 ions having three-fold degenerate t2gt_{2g} orbitals. Since orbitals do not couple along "inactive" axes, perpendicular to the orbital planes, the total number of electrons in ∣α>|\alpha > orbitals in any such plane and the corresponding total spin are both conserved. A Mermin-Wagner construction shows that there is no long-range spin ordering at nonzero temperatures. Inclusion of spin-orbit coupling allows such ordering, but even then the excitation spectrum is gapless due to a continuous symmetry.     Examining trends in the representation of young people and alcohol in Australian newspapers over twenty years (2000-2019)

    Background: The news media can reflect and influence public opinion, as well as affect individual practice. In the context of significant changes in alcohol consumption among young people over the past twenty years, we examined Australian newspaper reporting of young people (under 18 years) and alcohol to assess whether there have been changes over time in the content and slant of articles that reflect or elucidate these trends. Methods: Factiva was used to search newspaper articles from major Australian newspapers over a twenty year period (2000-2019). After screening, two researchers coded 2,415 newspaper articles across four key domains: article type, article theme, sources cited and topic slant (e.g. approving, disapproving tone). Change over time across the study period was assessed using joinpoint Poisson regression analyses. Results: There was a significant increase in articles on young people and alcohol between 2000 and 2008, before a corresponding decrease to 2019. Policy or prevention strategies were the most common theme of articles (35.8%), followed by articles reporting on risks or harms associated with alcohol use for young people (18.1%). Researchers were the most common source reported (25.1%), followed by politicians (19.0%). Three quarters of articles (75.9%) had a socially disapproving topic slant, which increased significantly up until 2011, with a corresponding decrease thereafter. Conclusion: Attention to, and problematisation of, young people and alcohol increased in the first decade of this millennium which may have acted to sustain or accelerate declining drinking trends. However, this dissipated back to baseline levels in the second decade, which may indicate a lag time in recognition of young people’s drinking becoming less of a public health ‘problem’
