    Assessment of Models of Galactic Thermal Dust Emission Using COBE/FIRAS and COBE/DIRBE Observations

    Accurate modeling of the spectrum of thermal dust emission at millimeter wavelengths is important for improving the accuracy of foreground subtraction for CMB measurements, for improving the accuracy with which the contributions of different foreground emission components can be determined, and for improving our understanding of dust composition and dust physics. We fit four models of dust emission to high Galactic latitude COBE/FIRAS and COBE/DIRBE observations from 3 millimeters to 100 microns and compare the quality of the fits. We consider the two-level systems model because it provides a physically motivated explanation for the observed long wavelength flattening of the dust spectrum and the anticorrelation between emissivity index and dust temperature. We consider the model of Finkbeiner, Davis, and Schlegel because it has been widely used for CMB studies, and the generalized version of this model recently applied to Planck data by Meisner and Finkbeiner. For comparison we have also fit a phenomenological model consisting of the sum of two graybody components. We find that the two-graybody model gives the best fit and the FDS model gives a significantly poorer fit than the other models. The Meisner and Finkbeiner model and the two-level systems model remain viable for use in Galactic foreground subtraction, but the FIRAS data do not have sufficient signal-to-noise ratio to provide a strong test of the predicted spectrum at millimeter wavelengths.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures.     Mechanical properties and characterization of epoxy composites containing highly entangled as-received and acid treated carbon nanotubes

    Huntsman–Merrimack MIRALON® carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a novel, highly entan-gled, commercially available, and scalable format of nanotubes. As-received and acid-treated CNTs were added to aerospace grade epoxy (CYCOM® 977-3), and the composites were characterized. The epoxy resin is expected to infiltrate the network of the CNTs and could improve mechanical properties. Epoxy composites were tested for flexural and viscoelastic properties and the as-re-ceived and acid treated CNTs were characterized using Field-Emission Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Thermogravimetric Analysis. Composites containing 0.4 wt% as-received CNTs showed an increase in flexural strength, from 136.9 MPa for neat epoxy to 147.5 MPa. In addition, the flexural modulus increased from 3.88 GPa for the neat epoxy to 4.24 GPa and 4.49 GPa for the 2.0 wt% and 3.0 wt% as-received CNT/epoxy compo-sites, respectively. FE-SEM micrographs indicated good dispersion of the CNTs in the as-received CNT/epoxy composites and the 10 M nitric acid 6 h treatment at 120 °C CNT/epoxy composites. CNTs treated with 10 M nitric acid for 6 h at 120 °C added oxygen containing functional groups (C– O, C=O, and O=C–O) and removed iron catalyst present on the as-received CNTs, but the flexural properties were not improved compared to the as-received CNT/epoxy composites

    Multiscale Modeling of PEEK Using Reactive Molecular Dynamics Modeling and Micromechanics

    Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a high-performance, semi-crystalline thermoplastic that is used in a wide range of engineering applications, including some structural components of aircraft. The design of new PEEK-based materials requires a precise understanding of the multiscale structure and behavior of semi-crystalline PEEK. Molecular Dynamics (MD) modeling can efficiently predict bulk-level properties of single phase polymers, and micromechanics can be used to homogenize those phases based on the overall polymer microstructure. In this study, MD modeling was used to predict the mechanical properties of the amorphous and crystalline phases of PEEK. The hierarchical microstructure of PEEK, which combines the aforementioned phases, was modeled using a multiscale modeling approach facilitated by NASA's MSGMC. The bulk mechanical properties of semi-crystalline PEEK predicted using MD modeling and MSGMC agree well with vendor data, thus validating the multiscale modeling approach

    Prospective longitudinal study of coagulation profiles in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome from stage I through Fontan completion

    ObjectiveThe risk for thrombosis is increased after the Fontan operation. It is unknown whether children with univentricular heart disease have an intrinsic coagulation anomaly or acquire a defect in coagulation during the course of the staged repair. This prospective, longitudinal study evaluated changes in coagulation profiles in a cohort of patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome from stage I palliation through completion of the Fontan operation.MethodsThirty-seven patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome were enrolled prospectively, and the concentration of factors II, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, proteins C and S, fibrinogen, antithrombin, serum albumin, and liver enzymes were measured before stage I palliation (mean age 4 ± 2 days), before bidirectional Glenn (mean age 5.9 ± 1.8 months), before the Fontan procedure (mean age 27.1 ± 6.6 months), and after the Fontan procedure (mean age 49 ± 17.6months). Healthy children were used as age-matched controls for coagulation factors. Demographic, hemodynamic variables, and elapsed time after the Fontan procedure were evaluated as possible predictors of coagulation abnormalities.ResultsSignificantly lower levels of both procoagulation and anticoagulation factors were demonstrated through to completion of the Fontan procedure. After the Fontan procedure, there was a significantly higher factor VIII level (P < .005) but no correlation with hemodynamic variables or liver function.ConclusionThis longitudinal study in patients with identical cardiac disease and staged surgical procedures confirms the increase in factor VIII level after the Fontan procedure. This is an acquired defect, and although the cause remains to be determined, monitoring factor VIII levels after the Fontan operation could indicate a subset of patients at risk for thrombosis

    Estimation of genetic variation in residual variance in female and male broiler chickens

    In breeding programs, robustness of animals and uniformity of end product can be improved by exploiting genetic variation in residual variance. Residual variance can be defined as environmental variance after accounting for all identifiable effects. The aims of this study were to estimate genetic variance in residual variance of body weight, and to estimate genetic correlations between body weight itself and its residual variance and between female and male residual variance for broilers. The data sets comprised 26 972 female and 24 407 male body weight records. Variance components were estimated with ASREML. Estimates of the heritability of residual variance were in the range 0.029 (s.e.50.003) to 0.047 (s.e.50.004). The genetic coefficients of variation were high, between 0.35 and 0.57. Heritabilities were higher in females than in males. Accounting for heterogeneous residual variance increased the heritabilities for body weight as well. Genetic correlations between body weight and its residual variance were 20.41 (s.e.50.032) and 20.45 (s.e.50.040), respectively, in females and males. The genetic correlation between female and male residual variance was 0.11 (s.e.50.089), indicating that female and male residual variance are different traits.
