    A new electrochemical method for the determination of chondroitin sulfate based on its supramolecular interaction with cupferron-lead(II) complex

    In this paper, the interaction of cupferron (Cup) and lead (II) complex [Cup-Pb (II)] with chondroitin sulfate (CS) was investigated by linear sweep voltammetric method. In the selected medium of pH 5.5 (acetic acid-hexamine buffer solution), Cup can interact with Pb (II) to form a stable complex of [Cup-Pb(II)], which has a sensitive second order derivative polarographic reductive peak at -0.64V (vs.SCE). After the addition of CS into Cup-Pb (II) complex solution, the reductive peak current decreased without any shift of the peak potential and no new peak appeared, which indicated that an unelectroactive supramolecular complex of CS with [Cup-Pb(II)] was formed. The binding reaction conditions were carefully investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the interaction mechanism was discussed. The decrease of reductive peak current was directly proportional to the CS concentration, thus a new quantitative determination method for CS was established with the linear regression equation as ΔIp″(nA)=36.97 C/mg L-1+12.45 (n=10, Îł=0.995). The effects of other substances on the determination were carefully investigated and three synthetic samples were determined with satisfactory results. The binding constant (ÎČs) and the binding number (m) of CS with [Cup-Pb(II)] complex were calculated from the voltammetric data with the results as ÎČs=1.89×1010 and m≈2.5

    Severe breastfeeding difficulties: Existential lostness as a mother—Women's lived experiences of initiating breastfeeding under severe difficulties

    A majority of women in Sweden initiate breastfeeding but almost a quarter stop or wean the infant in the first few weeks after birth because of difficulties. In order to develop care that facilitates initiation of breastfeeding and enables mothers to realize their expectations concerning breastfeeding, it is necessary to understand what having severe breastfeeding difficulties means for women who experience them. The aim of this study is to describe the lived experiences of initiating breastfeeding under severe difficulties. A reflective lifeworld research design was used. Eight women, seven primiparous and one multipara, were interviewed within 2 months of giving birth. The essential meaning of the phenomenon is described as “Existential lostness as a mother forcing oneself into a constant fight”. This pattern is further explicated through its constituents; shattered expectations, a lost time for closeness, being of no use to the infant, being forced to expose oneself, and gaining strength through sharing. The results show that mothers with severe breastfeeding difficulties feel alone and exposed because of their suffering and are lost in motherhood. Thus, adequate care for mothers should enhance the forming of a caring relationship through sharing rather than exposing

    A Novel Classification of Lung Cancer into Molecular Subtypes

    The remarkably heterogeneous nature of lung cancer has become more apparent over the last decade. In general, advanced lung cancer is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. The discovery of multiple molecular mechanisms underlying the development, progression, and prognosis of lung cancer, however, has created new opportunities for targeted therapy and improved outcome. In this paper, we define “molecular subtypes” of lung cancer based on specific actionable genetic aberrations. Each subtype is associated with molecular tests that define the subtype and drugs that may potentially treat it. We hope this paper will be a useful guide to clinicians and researchers alike by assisting in therapy decision making and acting as a platform for further study. In this new era of cancer treatment, the ‘one-size-fits-all’ paradigm is being forcibly pushed aside—allowing for more effective, personalized oncologic care to emerge

    A four-surface schematic eye of macaque monkey obtained by an optical method

    AbstractSchematic eyes for four Macaca fascicularis monkeys were constructed from measurements of the positions and curvatures of the anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea and lens. All of these measurements were obtained from Scheimpflug photography through the use of a ray-tracing analysis. Some of these measurements were also checked (and confirmed) by keratometry and ultrasound. Gaussian lens equations were applied to the measured dimensions of each individual eye in order to construct schematic eyes. The mean total power predicted by the schematic eyes agreed closely with independent measurements based on retinoscopy and ultrasound results, 74.2 ± 1.3 (SEM) vs 74.7 ± 0.3 (SEM) diopters. The predicted magnification of 202 ÎŒm/deg in one eye was confirmed by direct measurement of 205 ÎŒm/deg for a foveal laser lesion. The mean foveal retinal magnification calculated for our eight schematic eyes was 211 ± (SEM) ÎŒm/deg, slightly less than the value obtained by application of the method of Rolls and Cowey [Experimental Brain Research, 10, 298–310 (1970)] to our eight eyes but just 4% more than the value obtained by application of the method of Perry and Cowey [Vision Research, 12, 1795–1810 (1985)]
