Due to the rising demand of energy over several decades, conventional energy resources have been continuously and drastically explored all around the world. As a result, global warming is inevitable due to the massive exhaust of CO2 into the atmosphere from the conventional energy sources. This global issue has become a high concern of industrial countries who are trying to reduce their emission production by increasing the utilization of renewable energies such as wind energy. Wind energy has become very attractive since the revolution of power electronics technology, which can be equipped with wind turbines. Wind energy can be optimally captured with wind turbine converters. However, these converters are very sensitive if connected with the grid as grid disturbances may have a catastrophic impact on the overall performance of the wind turbines. In this thesis, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) is applied on wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) that are equipped with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) during the presence of voltage sags and swells in the grid side. Without SMES, certain levels of voltage sags and swells in the grid side may cause a critical operating condition that may require disconnection of WECS to the grid. This condition is mainly determined by the voltage profile at the point of common coupling (PCC), which is set up differently by concerned countries all over the world. This requirement is determined by the transmission system operator (TSO) in conjunction with the concerned government. The determined requirement is known as grid codes or fault ride through (FRT) capability. The selection of a SMES unit in this thesis is based on its advantages over other energy storage technologies. Compared to other energy storage options, the SMES unit is ranked first in terms of highest efficiency, which is 90-99%. The high efficiency of the SMES unit is achieved by its low power loss because electric currents in the coil encounter almost no resistance and there are no moving parts, which means no friction losses. Meanwhile, DFIG is selected because it is the most popular installed WECS over the world. In 2004 about 55% of the total installed WECS worldwide were equipped with DFIG. There are two main strategies that can be applied to meet the grid requirements of a particular TSO. The first strategy is development of new control techniques to fulfil the criterion of the TSOs. This strategy, however, is applicable only to the new WECS that have not been connected to the power grid. If new control techniques are applied to the existing gridconnected WECSs, they will not be cost effective because the obsolete design must be dismantled and re-installed to comply with current grid code requirements. The second strategy is the utilization of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices or storage energy devices to meet the grid code requirements. This strategy seems more appropriate for implementation in the existing WECS-grid connection in order to comply with the current grid code requirements. By appropriate design, the devices might be more cost effective compared to the first strategy, particularly for the large wind farms that are already connected to the grid.A new control algorithm of a SMES unit, which is simple but still involves all the important parameters, is employed in this study. Using the hysteresis current control approach in conjunction with a fuzzy logic controller, the SMES unit successfully and effectively improves the performance of the DFIG during voltage sag and swell events in the grid side; thus, this will prevent the WECS equipped with DFIG from being disconnected from the grid according to the selected fault ride through used in this study. The dynamic study of DFIG with SMES during short load variation is carried out as an additional advantage of SMES application on a DFIG system. In this study, the proposed SMES unit is controlled to compensate the reduced transfer power of DFIG during the short load variation event. Moreover, the SMES unit is also engaged in absorbing/storing some amount of excessive power that might be transferred to the grid when the local loads are suddenly decreased. Finally, the studies of intermittent misfires and fire-through that take place within the converters of DFIG are carried out in order to investigate the impact of these converter faults on the performance of DFIG. In this part, the proposed SMES unit is controlled to effectively improve the DFIG’s performance in order to prevent it from being disconnected or shut down from the power grid during the occurrence of these intermittent switching faults

Among several types, variable speed-based wind turbine generator (WTG) is the most popular type installed worldwide. This type of WTG is able to extract 5% more energy from wind speed compared to the fixed speed WTG. There are two kinds of variable speed based WTG; Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and Full Converter Wind Energy Conversion System (FCWECS). DFIG and FCWECS are placed at the first and second topWTG installation worldwide since 2004. However, both of them are very sensitive to the grid dip fault and may violate the allowable margins identified by various international Fault Ride Through (FRT) codes. This paper aims to investigate the responses of DFIG and FCWECS during certain level of grid dips and compare their performanceunder such event. Results show some differences of the performance of DFIG and FCWECS during voltage sag event, however the voltage profile at the point of common coupling is much better in case of DFIG. Results also recommend that DFIG can be effective when connected to weak grids whilst FCWECS is preferably to be connected to strong grids

The needs of renewable energy sources are inevitable to be increase from time to time due to global warmingissue and pollutions from conventional based power stations. However, the lateness progress of renewable energy basedpower stations in dominating worldwide total power stations is caused by the renewable energy’s technology ratherexpensive and some are still immature. For wind turbine itself, when connecting to the grid, it must obey the regulationparticularly when it disturbed by grid fault that might violate the grid code itself. Consequently, the wind turbine mustbe disconnected from the grid which in turn leads to high economic lost. This paper is aimed to design and simulate thecompensator for Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) which is connected to the grid using Supercapacitor (SC). SC iscontrolled with Hysteresis Current Controller (HCC) and Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). This system is modeled usingMATLAB. The simulation results show that voltage profile at Point of Common Coupling (PCC) is corrected above theselected Fault Ride Through (FRT) which is in turn avoiding the WTG disconnected from the gri

As an enabler component for renewable energy integration, power electronics (PE) technology in smart grid system is one of the most important issues of development the electrification, decentralization and information-technology/operation-technology (IT/OT) digitization within the electrical energy transmission and distribution systems. The arrangement of PE may different along the feeder either for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine, fuel cells, wave energy system and battery storage unit, respectively. This is due to the electric voltage that might need to be converted from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and vice versa. For that reason, this paper proposed a concept of advanced PE as an integrated arrangement of several AC/DC/AC-and DC/AC- converters in such ways that support thepreviously mentioned grid-connected hybrid renewable energy sources and distributed generators (DGs) along the distribution feeder. Additionally, for the system that supported by battery storage unit, then this hybrid smart grid concept might become the answer for future utility needs

Savonius wind turbine is one of the wind turbines that is more widely used for low energy needs, with more energy needs, this turbine type is very feasible to be developed. This research aims to improve the performance of Savonius wind turbines with variations in turbine blade curvature and variations in wind speed. The research method is a laboratory experiment on the fan test, the blade curvature test variation is 1R; 1.5R and 2R, another variation is the wind speed which are 4.0; 5.5; 7.0 and 8.5 m/s. The experiement results shows that the greater the wind speed, the input power, air mass flow velocity, power output, and efficiency will be even greater; the greater the load force on the turbine shaft, the torque on the turbine shaft will also be greater; the relationship of force loads to power output and turbine efficiency is to construct a parabolic curve; for the same wind speed, the 2R turbine has the lowest rotation, power output and efficiency compared to the 1R and 1.5R turbines; at the same wind speed the 1R turbine produces a higher rotation but requires lower torque than the 1.5R turbine; at low wind speeds (4 m / s) the 1.5R turbine has better efficiency than the 1R turbine, whereas at the high wind speed (8.5 m/s) the 1R turbine has a better efficiency than the 1.5R turbine; The maximum efficiency is obtained at 89.56% in the 1R curvature turbine with a wind speed of 8.5 m / s
