Divide and conquer: resonance induced by competitive interactions
We study an Ising model in a network with disorder induced by the presence of
both attractive and repulsive links. This system is subjected to a subthreshold
signal, and the goal is to see how the response is enhanced for a given
fraction of repulsive links. This can model a network of spin-like neurons with
excitatory and inhibitory couplings. By means of numerical simulations and
analytical calculations we find that there is an optimal probability, such that
the coherent response is maximal
Bulk-Edge correspondence of entanglement spectrum in 2D spin ground states
General local spin ground states, described by a Valence Bond Solid (VBS)
on a two dimensional lattice are studied. The norm of these ground states is
mapped to a classical O(3) model on the same lattice. Using this
quantum-to-classical mapping we obtain the partial density matrix
associated with a subsystem of the original ground state. We show that
the entanglement spectrum of in a translation invariant lattice
is given by the spectrum of a quantum spin chain at the boundary of region ,

Implications of multiple high-redshift galaxy clusters
To date, 14 high-redshift (z>1.0) galaxy clusters with mass measurements have
been observed, spectroscopically confirmed and are reported in the literature.
These objects should be exceedingly rare in the standard LCDM model. We
conservatively approximate the selection functions of these clusters' parent
surveys, and quantify the tension between the abundances of massive clusters as
predicted by the standard LCDM model and the observed ones. We alleviate the
tension considering non-Gaussian primordial perturbations of the local type,
characterized by the parameter fnl and derive constraints on fnl arising from
the mere existence of these clusters. At the 95% confidence level, fnl>467 with
cosmological parameters fixed to their most likely WMAP5 values, or fnl > 123
(at 95% confidence) if we marginalize over WMAP5 parameters priors. In
combination with fnl constraints from Cosmic Microwave Background and halo
bias, this determination implies a scale-dependence of fnl at approx. 3 sigma.
Given the assumptions made in the analysis, we expect any future improvements
to the modeling of the non-Gaussian mass function, survey volumes, or selection
functions to increase the significance of fnl>0 found here. In order to
reconcile these massive, high-z clusters with an fnl=0, their masses would need
to be systematically lowered by 1.5 sigma or the sigma8 parameter should be
approx. 3 sigma higher than CMB (and large-scale structure) constraints. The
existence of these objects is a puzzle: it either represents a challenge to the
LCDM paradigme or it is an indication that the mass estimates of clusters is

Early appraisal of the fixation probability in directed networks
In evolutionary dynamics, the probability that a mutation spreads through the
whole population, having arisen in a single individual, is known as the
fixation probability. In general, it is not possible to find the fixation
probability analytically given the mutant's fitness and the topological
constraints that govern the spread of the mutation, so one resorts to
simulations instead. Depending on the topology in use, a great number of
evolutionary steps may be needed in each of the simulation events, particularly
in those that end with the population containing mutants only. We introduce two
techniques to accelerate the determination of the fixation probability. The
first one skips all evolutionary steps in which the number of mutants does not
change and thereby reduces the number of steps per simulation event
considerably. This technique is computationally advantageous for some of the
so-called layered networks. The second technique, which is not restricted to
layered networks, consists of aborting any simulation event in which the number
of mutants has grown beyond a certain threshold value, and counting that event
as having led to a total spread of the mutation. For large populations, and
regardless of the network's topology, we demonstrate, both analytically and by
means of simulations, that using a threshold of about 100 mutants leads to an
estimate of the fixation probability that deviates in no significant way from
that obtained from the full-fledged simulations. We have observed speedups of
two orders of magnitude for layered networks with 10000 nodes
Efecto de la defoliación post-quema sobre el crecimiento de dos gramíneas nativas en el Caldenal, Argentina
El crecimiento en los pastizales naturales semiáridos puede ser afectado por la longitud de tiempo que el pastoreo es excluido durante el período de regeneración post-fuego. El objetivo de este trabajo a campo fue estudiar el efecto de la defoliación post-fuego en diferentes estados fenológicos: vegetativo (defoliación temprana) y elongación de entrenudos (defoliación tardía) sobre el crecimiento de Piptochaetium napostaense y Poa ligularis, dos gramíneas nativas perennes muy importantes en la región semiárida templada central de Argentina (Caldenal). En general, los tratamientos de defoliación post-quema no afectaron el número de hojas verdes en las macollas de P. napostaense. La defoliación temprana después del tratamiento de fuego generalmente redujo el número de hojas verdes en las macollas de P. ligularis con respecto a las plantas control. Contrariamente, la defoliación tardía usualmente incrementó el número de hojas verdes en las macollas de P. ligularis. Sin embargo, en ambos casos, muy pocas de las diferencias detectadas fueron significativas (p0,05) a aquellas de las plantas no defoliadas. Inmediatamente después de los tratamientos de defoliación temprana y tardía, las tasas de crecimiento relativas de la altura y la longitud verde total de las macollas de las plantas de ambas especies fueron reducidas (p0.05) than values on non-defoliated plants, respectively. Immediately after early- and late-season defoliation treatments, relative growth rates for tiller height and total green length were reduced (p<0.05) on plants of both species with respect to control plants. Our results suggest that a one-year-period without severe defoliations after fire would be at least necessary for not risking the persistence of these perennial grasses in the Caldenal community.Fil: Pelaez, Daniel Valerio. Gravitational shocks as a key ingredient of Gamma-Ray Bursts
We identify a novel physical mechanism that may be responsible for energy
release in -ray bursts. Radial perturbations in the neutron core,
induced by its collision with collapsing outer layers during the early stages
of supernova explosions, can trigger a gravitational shock, which can readily
eject a small but significant fraction of the collapsing material at
ultra-relativistic speeds. The development of such shocks is a strong-field
effect arising in near-critical collapse in General Relativity and has been
observed in numerical simulations in various contexts, including in particular
radially perturbed neutron star collapse, albeit for a tiny range of initial
conditions. Therefore, this effect can be easily missed in numerical
simulations if the relevant parameter space is not exhaustively investigated.
In the proposed picture, the observed rarity of -ray bursts would be
explained if the relevant conditions for this mechanism appear in only about
one in every core collapse supernovae. We also mention the
possibility that near-critical collapse could play a role in powering the
central engines of Active Galactic Nuclei.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Direct and Reverse Secret-Key Capacities of a Quantum Channel
We define the direct and reverse secret-key capacities of a memoryless
quantum channel as the optimal rates that entanglement-based quantum key
distribution protocols can reach by using a single forward classical
communication (direct reconciliation) or a single feedback classical
communication (reverse reconciliation). In particular, the reverse secret-key
capacity can be positive for antidegradable channels, where no forward strategy
is known to be secure. This property is explicitly shown in the continuous

Life goes on : Oblada melanura (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes, Sparidae), the saddled seabream, expands its distribution range westwards to the Azores
A group of 10 individuals of the saddled seabream, Oblada melanura (Linnaeus, 1758), was photographed at Lajes do Pico Bay, on Pico Island, Azores. This finding represents a significant westward expansion of the known range of this species and may be linked to global warming. A call is therefore made for a monitoring program of the coastal fish fauna of the Azores which would improve the understanding of the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic stressors on marine communities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Tomography of the Reionization Epoch with Multifrequency CMB Observations
We study the constraints that future multifrequency Cosmic Microwave
Background (CMB) experiments will be able to set on the metal enrichment
history of the Inter Galactic Medium at the epoch of reionisation. We forecast
the signal to noise ratio for the detection of the signal introduced in the CMB
by resonant scattering off metals at the end of the Dark Ages. We take into
account systematics associated to inter-channel calibration, PSF reconstruction
errors and innacurate foreground removal. We develop an algorithm to optimally
extract the signal generated by metals during reionisation and to remove
accurately the contamination due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect.
Although demanding levels of foreground characterisation and control of
systematics are required, they are very distinct from those encountered in
HI-21cm studies and CMB polarization, and this fact encourages the study of
resonant scattering off metals as an alternative way of conducting tomography
of the reionisation epoch. An ACT-like experiment with optimistic assumtions on
systematic effects, and looking at clean regions of the sky, can detect changes
of 3%-12% (95% c.l.) of the OIII abundance (with respect its solar value) in
the redshift range [12,22], for reionization redshift .
However, for , it can only set upper limits on NII abundance
increments of 60% its solar value in the redshift range [5.5,9],
(95% c.l.). These constraints assume that inter-channel calibration is accurate
down to one part in , which constitutes the most critical technical

Prototyping a design helps in determining system parameters, ranges and in structuring better systems. Robotics is one of the industrial design fields in which prototyping is crucial for improved functionality. Developing an environment that enables optimal and flexible design using reconfigurable links, joints, actuators and sensors is essential for using robots in the education and industrial fields [4] [6]. We propose a PC-Based software package to control, monitor and simulate a generic 6-DOF (six degrees of freedom) robot including a spherical wrist.
