    Low energy sputtering of Mo surfaces

    Surfaces of materials subject to irradiation will be affected by sputtering, which can be a beneficial effect, like in the coating industry where a material is sputtered and redeposited on to another material to coat it. However, in most cases sputtering is an unwanted side-effect, for instance in nuclear fusion reactors, where the wall material will be degraded. This effect needs to be understood in order to be able to predict its consequences. To understand the sputtering, on an atomistic level, we have thoroughly investigated molybdenum surface sputtering by computational means. Molybdenum was chosen as detailed experimental studies have been carried out on it and it is one candidate material for the diagnostic mirrors in ITER, facing the plasma. In this study, we thoroughly investigate the molybdenum samples of different surface orientations, and their response to low energy argon plasma irradiation, by molecular dynamics simulations. We find both a surface orientation and ion energy specific sputtering yield of the samples, and a very good agreement with the experiments available in the literature. A few different setups were investigated to observe differences as well as to understand the key features affecting the sputtering events. The different simulation setups revealed the optimal one to represent the experimental conditions as well as the mechanisms behind the observed discrepancies between different modelling setups.     Dust remobilization in fusion plasmas under steady state conditions

    The first combined experimental and theoretical studies of dust remobilization by plasma forces are reported. The main theoretical aspects of remobilization in fusion devices under steady state conditions are analyzed. In particular, the dominant role of adhesive forces is highlighted and generic remobilization conditions - direct lift-up, sliding, rolling - are formulated. A novel experimental technique is proposed, based on controlled adhesion of dust grains on tungsten samples combined with detailed mapping of the dust deposition profile prior and post plasma exposure. Proof-of-principle experiments in the TEXTOR tokamak and the EXTRAP-T2R reversed-field pinch are presented. The versatile environment of the linear device Pilot-PSI allowed for experiments with different magnetic field topologies and varying plasma conditions that were complemented with camera observations.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 3 table

    The environment effect on operation of in-vessel mirrors for plasma diagnostics in fusion devices

    First mirrors will be the plasma facing components of optical diagnostic systems in ITER. Mirror surfaces will undergo modification caused by erosion and re-deposition processes [1,2]. As a consequence, the mirror performance may be changed and may deteriorate [3,4]. In the divertor region it may also be obscured by deposition [5-7]. The limited access to in-vessel components of ITER calls for testing the mirror materials in present day devices in order to gather information on the material damage and degradation of the mirror performance, i.e. reflectivity.     Erosion yields of carbon under various plasma conditions in Pilot-PSI

    Fine-grain graphite targets have been exposed to ITER divertor relevant plasmas in Pilot-PSI to address material migration issues in fusion devices. Optical emission spectroscopy and mass loss measurements have been employed to quantify gross chemical erosion and net erosion yields, respectively. Effects of the ion impact energy and target geometry on carbon erosion yields have been studied. It is concluded that temporal evolution of gross chemical erosion is strongly connected with changes in morphology of plasma exposed surfaces. The net carbon erosion yield is increased when the targets are partly covered by insulating boron-nitride rings.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, Contribution to the 19th International Conference on Plasma Surface Interaction

    Ross Eckler discusses a problem in his article Planet Packing in the May 2001 Word Ways: given a list of words, such as the names of the planets, how efficiently can they be packed into a single string of characters so that each word on the list can be read off left to right (but not necessarily contiguously)? He hypothesizes there is no guarantee that any algorithm will end up with a minimum string. Since the design and analysis of algorithms has been my area of research for some 25 years, this caught my attention. Informally, an algorithm is a terminating procedure that could be coded as a computer program. (However, the procedure in the Planet Packing article does not contain enough tie-breaking rules to qualify as an algorithm)

    First mirror test in JET for ITER: Complete overview after three ILW campaigns

    The First Mirror Test for ITER has been carried out in JET with mirrors exposed during: (i) the third ILW campaign (ILW-3, 2015-2016, 23.33 h plasma) and (ii) all three campaigns, i.e. ILW-1 to ILW-3: 2011-2016, 63,52 h in total. All mirrors from main chamber wall show no significant changes of the total reflectivity from the initial value and the diffuse reflectivity does not exceed 3% in the spectral range above 500 nm. The modified layer on surface has very small amount of impurities such as D, Be, C, N, O and Ni. All mirrors from the divertor (inner, outer, base under the bulk W tile) lost reflectivity by 20-80% due to the beryllium-rich deposition also containing D, C, N, O, Ni and W. In the inner divertor N reaches 5 x 10(17) cm(-2), W is up to 4.3 x 10(17) cm(-2), while the content of Ni is the greatest in the outer divertor: 3.8 x 10(17) cm(-2). Oxygen-18 used as the tracer in experiments at the end of ILW-3 has been detected at the level of 1.1 x 10(16) cm(-2). The thickness of deposited layer is in the range of 90 nm to 900 nm. The layer growth rate in the base (2.7 pm s(-1)) and inner divertor is proportional to the exposure time when a single campaign and all three are compared. In a few cases, on mirrors located at the cassette mouth, flaking of deposits and erosion occurred

    Optimization of single crystal mirrors for ITER diagnostics

    Diagnostic mirrors are planned to be used in all optical diagnostics in ITER. Degradation of mirrors due to e.g. deposition of plasma impurities will hamper the entire performance of affected diagnostics. in situ mirror cleaning by plasma sputtering is presently envisaged for the recovery of contaminated mirrors. There are observations showing a signature of sputtering dependence on crystal orientation. Should such a dependence exist, the sputtering of single crystal mirrors could be minimized, thus prolonging a mirror lifetime. Four single crystal molybdenum mirrors with different orientations were produced to study the effect of crystal orientation on sputtering. Mirrors were exposed to argon plasma under identical plasma conditions relevant to those expected in the mirror cleaning systems of ITER. The energy of impinging ions was about 60 eV. The amount of sputtered material corresponded to about a hundred mirror cleaning cycles in argon. Plasma exposures did not affect the mirror reflectivity. The maximum decrease of specular reflectivity did not exceed 5% at 250 nm. The mirrors with orientations [110]/[101] demonstrated up to 42% less sputtering than the mirrors with other crystal orientations. These findings outline the advantage of a favorable crystal orientation for a cleaning of heavy contaminants from ITER mirrors.Peer reviewe
