    The influence of temperature on rehydration and sorption properties of freeze-dried strawberries

    The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of heating shelf temperature on selected physical properties of freeze-dried strawberries. Frozen strawberries were freeze-dried at heating shelf temperature of 10, 30, 50 and 70°C for 24 hours. Rehydration, adsorption rate and sorption isotherms were determined for freeze-dried strawberries. With increase the temperature of heating shelves in the range 10-50°C, rehydration capacity was increased. After 30 minutes of the rehydration process there was a decrease in water content, which is probably connected with changes in structure. Sorption isotherms were included to II isotherms type and have a sigmoidal shape characteristic for most food products. For the mathematical description Peleg’s model was used. For freeze-dried strawberries obtained in the range from 10 to 50°C isotherms have the same courses. Increase of temperature to 70°C resulted in obtaining the lowest water content in the water activity range from 0.113 to 0.648. There is a statistically significant influence of temperature of heating shelf on water vapour sorption for freeze-dried strawberries. For fruit freeze-dried in 30°C there was the highest water vapour sorption rate

    The fragmentation functions D_{a -> H}(x,mu^2) of a heavy hadron H, with mass m_H, satisfy the phase-space constraint D_{a - > H}(x,mu^2)=0 for x < m_H^2/mu^2, which is violated by the naive mu^2 evolution equations. Using appropriately generalized mu^2 evolution equations, we reconsider the inclusive hadroproduction of prompt J/psi mesons with high transverse momenta in the framework of the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, and determine the resulting shifts in the values of the leading colour-octet matrix elements, which are fitted to data from the Fermilab Tevatron.Comment: 8 pages (Latex), 3 figures (Postscript

    Crystal energy functions via the charge in types A and C

    The Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials (at t=0) provides a statistic which we call charge. In types A and C it can be defined on tensor products of Kashiwara-Nakashima single column crystals. In this paper we prove that the charge is equal to the (negative of the) energy function on affine crystals. The algorithm for computing charge is much simpler and can be more efficiently computed than the recursive definition of energy in terms of the combinatorial R-matrix.Comment: 25 pages; 1 figur

    Interval structure of the Pieri formula for Grothendieck polynomials

    We give a combinatorial interpretation of a Pieri formula for double Grothendieck polynomials in terms of an interval of the Bruhat order. Another description had been given by Lenart and Postnikov in terms of chain enumerations. We use Lascoux's interpretation of a product of Grothendieck polynomials as a product of two kinds of generators of the 0-Hecke algebra, or sorting operators. In this way we obtain a direct proof of the result of Lenart and Postnikov and then prove that the set of permutations occuring in the result is actually an interval of the Bruhat order.Comment: 27 page

    Interventional psychiatry in the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia: a qualitative review.

    &amp;ldquo;Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia&amp;rdquo; (BPSD) refers to a heterogeneous group of clinical manifestations related to dementia, including apathy, depression, anxiety, delusions, hallucinations, sexual or social disinhibition, sleep-wake cycle disturbances, aggression, agitation and other behaviours considered inappropriate. Because of the complexity and heterogeneity of BPSD, as well as the fragility and multimorbidity of the elderly, pharmacological treatment appears to be limited in terms of safety and efficacy, and nonpharmacological therapies are today considered the first choice. There is growing evidence that interventional approaches such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) could be safe and efficient options for several psychiatric illnesses in a population presenting resistance to and/or intolerance of pharmacotherapy. The aim of the present work is to provide a qualitative review of the state of the art in interventional psychiatry in the treatment of BPSD. A particular focus will be on depression and agitation, which represent major stressors on caregivers and a primary cause of institutionalisation. ECT is probably the most promising interventional procedure needing further investigation in order to obtain specific protocols and a consensus on indications. Preliminary data on rTMS, tDCS, and VNS are encouraging although randomised controlled trials to investigate and compare their efficacy in the treatment of BPSD are still lacking. Their feasibility profile could represent an important advantage over ECT. DBS could represent a very effective therapy for behavioural disorders, but knowledge of the precise neuroanatomical targets for BPSD is currently too limited to justify this invasive approach

    To what extent is the financial position of the elderly in the NMS more vulnerable than that of the old member states (or the EU-15), due to a rather unfavourable starting point and the possible impact of pension reforms? This is the main issue of the current research report. It tries to delineate the vulnerability of the income position of elderly people in the NMS, in relation to the demographic, socio-economic and institutional context of these countries. More specifically, the report focuses on: - the current level of income of the elderly in the NMS, and the degree of relative poverty; - the way this position is related to the educational and labour market status of the elderly in the NMS, their retirement behaviour, institutional arrangements (notably the pension system), and demographic developments; - specific problems regarding the income position of possibly ‘marginal’ elderly groups in the NMS (such as single elderly female pensioners)

    CEL: Coraz częściej podkreśla się, że duże znaczenie dla tworzenia innowacji mają praktyki zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi (HRMP), które odnoszą się do rekrutacji i selekcji, szkolenia i podnoszenia kompetencji, wynagrodzenia oraz oceny. Jednak pandemia COVID-19 pokazała, że tradycyjne HRMP już są niewystarczające, co pociąga za sobą potrzebę ich ponownego przemyślenia i przeformułowania w kierunku bardziej skutecznych dla tworzenia innowacji, ale także pozwalającym organizacjom przetrwać kryzysy na skalę COVID-19. Chociaż istnieje obszerna literatura w zakresie zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi i innowacji, nadal nie ma zgody co do praktyk zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzających innowacje. Niniejsze badanie ma na celu identyfikację oraz syntezę najbardziej znaczące i godne zaufania wkłady w badania praktyk zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzających innowacje. Dodatkowo, aby ułatwić budowanie teorii w zakresie HRMP niniejszy artykuł konsoliduje istniejący stan wiedzy w ramy integracyjne. Ramy te mogą być wykorzystywane przez przyszłych badaczy do identyfikacji luk i niejasności w rozumieniu praktyk zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzających innowacje. METODYKA: Artykuł prezentuje wyniki systematycznego przeglądu literatury 71 empirycznych artykułowych. Literatura przedmiotu została wyłoniona w oparciu o przeszukiwania zagranicznych baz danych, takich jak: Scopus i Web of Science. WYNIKI: Przeprowadzony przez nas systematyczny przegląd literatury pozwolił na identyfikację praktyk zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzających innowacje z uwzględnieniem trzech poziomów analizy: indywidualnym, grupowym oraz organizacyjnym, przy czym ten ostatni poziom analizy jest dominujący w dotychczasowych publikacjach. Rozpoznane praktyki zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzające innowacje z uwzględnieniem poziomów ujęliśmy w integracyjne ramy, które stanowią podstawę teoretyczną do kierowania przyszłymi badaniami. Nasze wyniki potwierdziły rosnący trend liczby publikacji w prezentowanej tematyce począwszy od 2010 r. Większość badaczy wykorzystywała podejście ilościowe. Na podstawie afiliacji pierwszego autora, najwięcej publikacji dostarczyli autorzy z Wielkiej Brytanii. Artykuły są publikowane w różnych czasopismach, przeważnie jednak o tematyce zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi. Badania uwzględniały różnorodne konteksty organizacyjne, przeważnie w dynamicznych i złożonych branżach. Nasze ustalenia potwierdzają, że obecny stan badań nad praktykami zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzającymi innowacje wskazują na konieczność prowadzenia dalszych badań w tym zakresie. W oparciu o to dostarczyliśmy luki poznawcze oraz potencjalne przyszłe pytania badacze z podziałem na trzy poziomy praktyk zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzające innowacje. IMPLIKACJE: Przeprowadzony przez nas systematyczny przegląd literatury pozwolił na zaproponowanie implikacji dla przyszłych badaczy planujących prowadzenie badań w zakresie praktyk zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzających innowacje. ORYGINALNOŚĆ I WARTOŚĆ: Nasz systematyczny przegląd literatury koncentruje się na identyfikacji praktyk zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzających innowacje, ustaleniu obecnego stanu wiedzy oraz przyszłych kierunków badań w tym zakresie. Dodatkowo opracowaliśmy ramy integracyjne, których celem jest uporządkowanie istniejącej literatury, ale także zidentyfikowanie obiecujących przyszłych kierunków badań nad praktykami zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi napędzającymi innowacje.PURPOSE: It is increasingly emphasized that human resource management practices (HRMP), which refer to recruiting and selection, training and development, compensation and performance appraisal, are of great importance for creating innovation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that traditional HRMPs are already insufficient, which entails the need to rethink and reformulate them in the direction of more effective innovation while also allowing organizations to survive COVID-19-like crises. While there is an extensive literature on human resources management and innovation, there is still no consensus on innovation-driven HRMP. This study aims to identify and synthesize most significant and trustworthy research contributions of innovation-driven HRMP. In addition, to facilitate theory building in the field of HRMP, this article consolidates the existing knowledge into an integrative framework. This framework can be used by future researchers to identify gaps and ambiguities in the meaning of innovation-driven HRMP. METHODOLOGY: The article presents the results of a systematic literature review of 71 empirical research articles referring to innovation-driven HRMP from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. FINDINGS: The systematic literature review allowed us to identify innovation-driven HRMP, taking into account three levels of analysis: individual, group and organizational, with the latter level of analysis being dominant in previous publications. Recognition of innovation-driven HRMP, taking into account the levels in question, is included in an integrative framework, which is the theoretical basis for guiding future research. Our results confirmed the growing trend in the number of publications on the subject since 2010. Most researchers used aquantitative approach. Based on the first author’s affiliation, authors from Great Britain contributed the largest number of publications. Articles are published in various journals, but mainly in those on human resources management. The research took into account a variety of organizational contexts, predominantly in dynamic and complex industries. Our findings show that the current state of research on innovation-driven HRMP confirms the need for further research in this area. Based on this, we provided thematic gaps and potential questions for future research divided into three levels of innovation driven HRMP. IMPLICATIONS: Our systematic literature review allowed us to propose implications for future researchers planning to conduct research in the field of innovation-driven HRMP. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: Our systematic literature review focuses on identifying innovation-driven HRMP along with determining the current state of knowledge and future research directions in this area. In addition, we developed an integrative framework that aims at organizing existing literature but also at identifying promising future research directions into innovation-driven HRMP

    Climate and caribou: effects of summer weather on the Chisana caribou herd

University of Alaska Fairbanks, 1997In 1989, the Chisana caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herd in the northern Wrangell Mountains, Alaska declined substantially in population size and productivity. Summers were significantly warmer and slightly drier during years the herd was declining (1989-1995) compared with years when the herd was stable or increasing (1981-1988). We increased air temperature and decreased precipitation with a plastic tent, decreased light intensity with a shade cloth, and increased precipitation by adding water to determine climatic effects on nutrient content and biomass of caribou forage during summer in 1994 and 1995 in the subarctic tundra. We determined that short-term variations in climate affected nutrient quality, particularly nitrogen content, in above-ground biomass of caribou forage.
