The Association Between Parents History of Type 2 Diabetes with Metabolic Syndrome Component and Insulin Resistance in Non-Diabetic Young Adult Male
Background: the familial nature of type 2 diabetes is manifested by the presence of insulin resistance in non-diabetic first degree relatives. Most of these studies have been performed in middle-aged and there is only few published studies in young age individuals and adolescents. This study aimed to determine the relationship between parents history of type-2 diabetes with metabolic syndrome component and insulin resistance in adolescent non-diabetic subjects. Methods: this was a cross sectional study comparing the metabolic profile, risk of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in non-diabetic male adolescents (17-24 years old) whose one or both parents were with type-2 diabetes. We performed anamnesis, physical examination, fasting plasma glucose, lipid profile, fasting insulin level and insulin resistance based on HOMA-IR. Results: metabolic abnormalities were more prevalent in subjects whose parents were with history of type-2 diabetes, especially their waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose, triglyceride, fasting insulin and HOMA-IR (p=0.000). There was increased risk of developing central obesity in adolescents with parental history of 19.3 fold (95%CI 2.46-151.07) and insulin resistance of 10.3 fold (95%CI 3.89-27.23). Parental history of type-2 diabetes together with metabolic syndrome component ie. waist circumference >90 cm and triglyceride ≥150 mg/dl were strong determinat factors for insulin resistance (R2=50.7%). Conclusion: the early multiple metabolic defect can be detected in non-diabetes adolescents with parental history of type-2 diabetes. Cluster of metabolic syndrome component in these subject become a powerful determinat factor for insulin resistance
Glomerulogenesis and Histomorphometeric in Mus musculus Embryo
In mammals, the kidneys originate in an embryo from the mesoderm through three excretory organs, namely: Pronephros, Mesonephros, and Metanephros. After the formation of Metanephros is completed, the kidneys begin to form nephrogenesis through mesenchymal cells located at the tip of the ureteric bud, that contribute in the formation of glomerulus and Renal tubules. The stages of glomerulus formation in the embryo of albino mice at the age of 14 to 19 days of gestation were studied. It was obtained after the sacrifice of the expectant mother and the kidneys were excised from the embryos and fixed using Aqueous Bouin's solution, Microscopic slices with a thickness of 6 microns were then made in a paraffin method and were photographed by a camera for microscopic imaging. Histological measurements were performed on them using the program IMAGE J program and analyzed statistically using the SPSS program.
Results of the current study showed the presence of five stages of glomerulus formation, namely, the renal vesicle, which represents the first stage in the formation of the nephron and glomerulus. This is followed by the Comma shape stage, S-shaped stage, Capillary loop stage and finally the Mature glomerulus. This is surrounded by a capsule, known as Bowman’s capsule being part of the Malpighian or Renal corpuscle. The statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences between the average diameters of the glomerular development stages, and that the mature glomerulus was larger in diameter than the rest of the stages. The study aims to determine the stages of glomerulus formation and histologically measure its diameter in the embryo of a Mus musculus.
Triazole derivative as new and effective corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid: Electrochemical and quantum chemical studies
The corrosion inhibition properties of triazole derivative via 3,4-diamino-1,2,4-triazole (TRD) were investigated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization methods. The results of electrochemical research revealed that the TRD was adsorbed on the metal surface by adsorption mechanism and behave as mixed type inhibitor. The Among TRD exhibited maximum efficiency of 90% at 10-3M. The inhibition mechanism was analyzed by the potential of zero charge (Epzc) measurement at the solution/metal interface. The adsorption behaviour of the 3,4-diamino-1,2,4-triazole on Fe (110) surface was investigated by Monte Carlo simulations to verify their corrosion inhibition efficacies.
Analysis of the Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Amorphous Fe 61Co10Zr2.5Hf2.5Me2W2B20 (Where Me = Mo, Nb, Ni Or Y) Ribbons
The paper presents the results of structural and magnetic properties and thermal stability for a group of functional materials based on Fe61Co10Zr2.5Hf2.5Me2W2B20 (where Me = Mo, Nb, Ni or Y). Samples were obtained in the form of ribbons using melt-spinning method. The X-ray diffraction patterns of investigated samples confirmed their amorphous structure. Based on the analysis of DSC curves characteristic temperatures: glass forming temperature (Tg), crystallization temperature (Tx) and temperature range of the supercooled liquid ΔTx were determined. Small addition of transition metals elements has strong influence on magnetic and thermal parameters of studied materials. The comprehensive studies revealed that in terms of magnetic properties the Ni-addition resulted in highest reduction in coercivity and anisotropy field
Optically trapped bacteria pairs reveal discrete motile response to control aggregation upon cell–cell approach
Aggregation of bacteria plays a key role in the formation of many biofilms. The critical first step is cell–cell approach, and yet the ability of bacteria to control the likelihood of aggregation during this primary phase is unknown. Here, we use optical tweezers to measure the force between isolated Bacillus subtilis cells during approach. As we move the bacteria towards each other, cell motility (bacterial swimming) initiates the generation of repulsive forces at bacterial separations of ~3 μm. Moreover, the motile response displays spatial sensitivity with greater cell–cell repulsion evident as inter-bacterial distances decrease. To examine the environmental influence on the inter-bacterial forces, we perform the experiment with bacteria suspended in Tryptic Soy Broth, NaCl solution and deionised water. Our experiments demonstrate that repulsive forces are strongest in systems that inhibit biofilm formation (Tryptic Soy Broth), while attractive forces are weak and rare, even in systems where biofilms develop (NaCl solution). These results reveal that bacteria are able to control the likelihood of aggregation during the approach phase through a discretely modulated motile response. Clearly, the force-generating motility we observe during approach promotes biofilm prevention, rather than biofilm formation
An Easy-to-Use Prognostic Model for Survival Estimation for Patients with Symptomatic Long Bone Metastases
BACKGROUND: A survival estimation for patients with symptomatic long bone metastases (LBM) is crucial to prevent overtreatment and undertreatment. This study analyzed prognostic factors for overall survival and developed a simple, easy-to-use prognostic model. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study of 1,520 patients treated for symptomatic LBM between 2000 and 2013 at the radiation therapy and/or orthopaedic departments was performed. Primary tumors were categorized into 3 clinical profiles (favorable, moderate, or unfavorable) according to an existing classification system. Associations between prognostic variables and overall survival were investigated using the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate Cox regression models. The discriminatory ability of the developed model was assessed with the Harrell C-statistic. The observed and expected survival for each survival category were compared on the basis of an external cohort. RESULTS: Median overall survival was 7.4 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 6.7 to 8.1 months). On the basis of the independent prognostic factors, namely the clinical profile, Karnofsky Performance Score, and presence of visceral and/or brain metastases, 12 prognostic categories were created. The Harrell C-statistic was 0.70. A flowchart was developed to easily stratify patients. Using cutoff points for clinical decision-making, the 12 categories were narrowed down to 4 categories with clinical consequences. Median survival was 21.9 months (95% CI, 18.7 to 25.1 months), 10.5 months (95% CI, 7.9 to 13.1 months), 4.6 months (95% CI, 3.9 to 5.3 months), and 2.2 months (95% CI, 1.8 to 2.6 months) for the 4 categories. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents a model to easily stratify patients with symptomatic LBM according to their expected survival. The simplicity and clarity of the model facilitate and encourage its use in the routine care of patients with LBM, to provide the most appropriate treatment for each individual patient. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic Level IV. See Instructions for Authors for a complete description of levels of evidence

Background/Aims: Growth Hormone (GH) dosage in childhood is adjusted for body size, but there is no consensus whether body weight (BW) or body surface area (BSA) should be used. We aimed at comparing the biological effect and cost-effectiveness of GH treatment dosed per m(2) BSA in comparison with dosing per kg BW in girls with Turner syndrome (TS). Methods: Serum IGF-I, GH dose, and adult height gain (AHG) from girls participating in two Dutch and five Swedish studies on the efficacy of GH were analyzed, and the cumulative GH dose and costs were calculated for both dose adjustment methods. Additional medication included estrogens (if no spontaneous puberty occurred) and oxandrolone in some studies. Results: At each GH dose, the serum IGF-I standard deviation score remained stable over time after an initial increase after the start of treatment. On a high dose (at 1 m(2) equivalent to 0.056-0.067 mg/kg/day), AHG was at least equal on GH dosed per m(2) BSA compared with dosing per kg BW. The cumulative dose and cost were significantly lower if the GH dose was adjusted for m(2) BSA. Conclusion: Dosing GH per m(2) BSA is at least as efficacious as dosing per kg BW, and is more cost-effective. (c) 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel
Changes in intraocular pressure in study and fellow eyes in the IVAN trial
PURPOSE: To describe changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) in the 'alternative treatments to Inhibit VEGF in Age-related choroidal Neovascularisation (IVAN)' trial (registered as ISRCTN92166560). DESIGN: Randomised controlled clinical trial with factorial design. PARTICIPANTS: Patients (n=610) with treatment naïve neovascular age-related macular degeneration were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either ranibizumab or bevacizumab and to two regimens, namely monthly (continuous) or as needed (discontinuous) treatment. METHODS: At monthly visits, IOP was measured preinjection in both eyes, and postinjection in the study eye. OUTCOME MEASURES: The effects of 10 prespecified covariates on preinjection IOP, change in IOP (postinjection minus preinjection) and the difference in preinjection IOP between the two eyes were examined. RESULTS: For every month in trial, there was a statistically significant rise in both the preinjection IOP and the change in IOP postinjection during the time in the trial (estimate 0.02 mm Hg, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.03, p<0.001 and 0.03 mm Hg, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.04, p=0.002, respectively). There was also a small but significant increase during the time in trial in the difference in IOP between the two eyes (estimate 0.01 mm Hg, 95% CI 0.005 to 0.02, p<0.001). There were no differences between bevacizumab and ranibizumab for any of the three outcomes (p=0.93, p=0.22 and p=0.87, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents induce increases in IOP of small and uncertain clinical significance
Geology and rural landscapes in central Spain (Guadalajara, Castilla—La Mancha)
Methods commonly used in regional geological analysis were employed to study the visual landscapes of the Sigüenza–Molina de Aragón area (Spain). Landscape data were compiled to produce a landscape map and a photograph
catalogue. Lithological composition, tectonic structure and recent erosive processes are the main factors controlling the visual landscapes. Territorial properties, such as colours and agricultural capacities, are controlled by these geological characteristics. The landscape map and the photographic catalogue is the main
contribution of this paper. The first level of landscape classification distinguishes zones with dominance of either flat, concave or convex areas. Other parts of the territory are, however, composed of concave and convex combinations that originate hybrid orographic structures. In a second level of classification, several subdivisions for each of these types are established
