    Cost-aware scheduling on uniform parallel machines

    Get PDF
    We consider scheduling problems with uniform parallel machines to minimize the sum of the total (weighted) completion time and the total cost for usage of machines. A cost density function is given for each machine in advance. Integrating the cost density function for the time period(s) when the machine is busy, one obtains the cost of using this machine in a schedule. We suggest the classification of the problems under consideration according to the type of the cost density functions. The notions of a simple cost density function and an almost concave cost density function are introduced. For these types of cost density functions, we investigate the properties of optimal schedules. Based on these properties, we develop two families of exact pseudo-polynomial DP algorithms. For the case of two uniform machines, we present an FPTAS. Besides, a polynomial-solvable case of the problem is considered

    Structure and formation of luminescent centers in light-up Ag cluster-based DNA probes

    Fluorescent beacons based on silver (Ag) clusters for DNA/RNA detection represent a new type of turn-on probe that fluoresces upon hybridization to target nucleobase sequences. Physical–chemical mechanisms of their fluorescence activation still remain poorly understood. We studied in detail the fluorescence activation of dark Ag clusters induced by interactions of Ag–DNA complexes with different DNA sequences. In all cases, the final result depends neither on the location of the precursors (dark clusters) nor on their spectral properties. The reaction of fluorescence activation is a process similar to the growth of fluorescent silver clusters on dsDNA matrices. In both cases, reactants are dark clusters and two adjacent DNA strands. The latter form a double-stranded template for cluster nucleation. We found the optimized structure of a green fluorescent Ag4+2 cluster assembled on a C3/C3 DNA dimer in two different ssDNA pairs using QM modeling. The calculated absorption spectra match nicely the experimental ones, which proves the optimized structures. We conclude that apparent fluorescence activation in the studied systems results from reassembling Ag clusters on the new dsDNA template formed upon hybridization with the target. The suggested mechanism of “fluorescence activation” offers a way to design new light-up DNA probes. Two DNA strands making up the dsDNA template providing a high yield of bright Ag clusters can be used as the halves with the “stick” tails hybridizing with the base sequence of the target DNA. In this way, we have designed a light-up Ag cluster probe for β-actin mRNA

    Diffusion doping route to plasmonic Si/SiOx nanoparticles

    International audienceSemiconductor nanoparticles (SNPs) are a valuable building block for functional materials. Capabilities for engineering of electronic structure of SNPs can be further improved with development of techniques of doping by diffusion, as post-synthetic introduction of impurities does not affect the nucleation and growth of SNPs. Diffusion of dopants from an external source also potentially allows for temporal control of radial distribution of impurities. In this paper we report on the doping of Si/SiOx SNPs by annealing particles in gaseous phosphorus. The technique can provide efficient incorporation of impurities, controllable with precursor vapor pressure. HRTEM and X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that obtained particles retain their nanocrystallinity. Elemental analysis revealed doping levels up to 10%. Electrical activity of the impurity was confirmed through thermopower measurements and observation of localized surface plasmon resonance in IR spectra. The plasmonic behavior of etched particles and EDX elemental mapping suggest uniform distribution of phosphorus in the crystalline silicon cores. Impurity activation efficiencies up to 34% were achieved, which indicate high electrical activity of thermodynamically soluble phosphorus in oxide-terminated nanosilicon

    We consider a scheduling problem with two parallel machines to minimize the sum of total weighted completion time and total machine time slot costs. In the case of the constant or linear decreasing sequences of time slotcosts we suggest an exact pseudopolynomial DP algorithm.Рассматривается задача построения оптимального расписания обслуживания требований двумя параллельными приборами. В качестве целевой функции применяется линейная комбинация взвешенной суммы моментов завершения обслуживания требований и суммарной стоимости использования временных интервалов. В случае заданных для каждого из приборов линейно убывающих или постоянных последовательностей стоимостей временных интервалов предлагается точный псевдополиномиальный алгоритм динамического программирования

    Objective. Evaluation of myocardial expression of the pro-autophagic protein Beclin-1 after cardiac contusion in experimental animals with different stress resistance.Materials and methods. The study included 68 white mongrel male rats weighing 250–300 g. After ranking for extreme variants of stress resistance, moderately stress-resistant rats (N=36) were excluded from the study. The remaining animals were split into the control (N=16) and study (N=16) groups, each group composed of 8 high stress resistant and 8 low stress resistant rats. In the study group, 24 hours after inflicted cardiac contusion, 5×5 mm myocardial tissue specimens were sampled from the intraventricular septum, anterior walls of the left and right ventricles, histological sections were made, and a reaction with primary polyclonal Anti-Beclin-1 antibodies was performed. Beclin-1 expression was evaluated under the microscope.Results. Immunohistochemical evaluation revealed a statistically significant increase in Beclin-1 protein expression (P=0.0002) in the cytoplasm of cardiomyocytes in the study group vs the control group, regardless of animals’ baseline stress resistance. However, expression of Beclin-1 protein in the myocardium of highly stress-resistant rats (Me=4.3; LQ=4.0; HQ=4.3) was significantly higher versus low-resistant animals (Me=3.6; LQ=3.3; HQ=3.6) (P=0.0009).Conclusion. Increased expression of Beclin-1 protein in the post-traumatic period of experimental cardiac contusion indicates autophagic flux activation. Intensity of autophagy varied depending on the animal’s stress resistance.Цель исследования. Оценка выраженности экспрессии проаутофагического белка Beclin-1 в миокарде при различной стрессоустойчивости после экспериментального ушиба сердца.Материалы и методы. В исследование включили 68 белых беспородных крыс-самцов массой 250–300 г. Животных ранжировали по крайним вариантам стрессоустойчивости. Среднестрессоустойчивых крыс (n=36) исключили из исследования. Затем сформировали контрольную (n=16) и опытную (n=16) группы. В каждой группе выделили подгруппы, включавшие крыс с высокой и низкой стрессоустойчивостью, по 8 животных в каждой. В опытной группе через 24 ч после моделирования ушиба сердца из межжелудочковой перегородки, передних стенок левого и правого желудочков иссекали фрагменты миокарда 5×5 мм, изготавливали гистологические срезы, проводили реакцию с первичными поликлональными антителами Anti-Beclin-1. Полученные образцы исследовали под микроскопом.Результаты. Иммуногистохимическое исследование выявило статистически значимое увеличение (p=0,0002) экспрессии белка Beclin-1 в цитоплазме кардиомиоцитов в опытной группе по сравнению с контрольной вне зависимости от исходной стрессоустойчивости. Однако в миокарде высокоустойчивых к стрессу травмированных крыс наблюдали более выраженный уровень экспрессии белка Beclin-1 (Me=4,3; LQ=4,0; HQ=4,3) в сравнении с низкоустойчивыми особями (Me=3,6; LQ=3,3; HQ=3,6) (p=0,0009).Заключение. Выявленное увеличение экспрессии белка Beclin-1 в посттравматическом периоде экспериментального ушиба сердца свидетельствует об активации процессов аутофагии. Выраженность аутофагии различалась в зависимости от стрессоустойчивости организма животного

    We present a study of the inclusive photon spectrum from 6.3 million J/psi decays collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+e- collider. We measure the branching fraction of the radiative decay J/psi -> eta_c gamma, eta_c width and mass. Taking into account an asymmetric photon line shape we obtain: M(eta_c) = (2978.1 +- 1.4 +- 2.0) MeV/c^2, Gamma(eta_c) = (43.5 +- 5.4 +- 15.8) MeV, B(J/psi->eta_c gamma) = (2.59 +- 0.16 +- 0.31)%$.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure.
